Age: Unknown

The Faceless One is a wizard and cultist of the Ebon Triad. He leads the cult's Vecnan contingent dwelling deep inside Dourstone Mine in Diamond Lake. The Faceless One is an early nemesis in Dungeon's Age of Worms adventure path.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Faceless One's appearance is quite distinctive. His frame appears gaunt and fragile, and his pale, albinoid skin bears arcane tattoos upon the hands and forearms. Most disturbingly, his face is blank and featureless, with coal-black eyes, a small, sharp nose, and a toothless mouth. He wears a green, hooded robe trimmed in yellow, and covers his visage with a leather mask bearing iron studs. He is armed with a dagger and a lesser metamagic rod.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

The Faceless One is an ally of the Hextorian priest Theldrick and the Grallak Kur, the grimlock priest of Erythnul, who lead the Ebon Triad's Hextorian and Erythnulite factions in Diamond Lake. Though technically equals, the Faceless one seems to be the senior partner in this triumvirite.

History[edit | edit source]

Early history[edit | edit source]

The Faceless One's early history is unrevealed. However, it is quite possible that his appearance is due to aquiring the Vecnan god-blooded template detailed in Monster Manual V (2007). Though the template was not reflected in the Faceless One's stat block in Dungeon #125 (2005), the description given in MMV of those who take on the template is very similar to the Faceless One's physical description. The template's entry further mentions one Delether of Hardby, an individual who took on the template, leading some to speculate that Delether and the Faceless One are one and the same.

The Age of Worms[edit | edit source]

By 593 CY, the Faceless One had become the leader of a small cell of Vecnan cultists. That year, the group unearthed evidence of spawn of Kyuss in the Cairn Hills south of Diamond Lake. Knowing that Vecna himself had once conducted experiments in the same region, the Faceless One led his band to Diamond Lake, where they discovered Vecna's old laboratory--the Black Cathedral--located deep underground, near a mine owned by Ragnolin Dourstone. The Faceless One then corrupted Dourstone and convinced him to carve a secret shaft to this chamber (Dungeon #125.18). By 595 CY, Theldrick and Grallak Kur had joined him there.

In 595 CY, Ragnolin Dourstone asked fellow mine manager Balabar Smenk to run secret shipments of food and supplies to the branch of the Ebon Triad living in his mine. Smenk agreed, but only on the condition of seeing the Black Cathedral and meeting the Faceless One (Dungeon #124.40).

Also in 595, the Faceless One discovered the Whispering Cairn, and sent a lurking strangler into the tomb to investigate (Dungeon #124 states that this event occurred one week prior to the beginning of the Age of Worms campaign).

The Faceless One, given his role as a "boss monster" in Dungeon #125, is most likely presumed dead in the current campaign year.
