Nyrond, or more properly the Kingdom of Nyrond, refers to one of the largest good-aligned states in the Flanaess.

History[edit]

Early History[edit]

The lands that became Nyrond were inhabited by the Flan prior to the Suel and Oeridian incursions during the Great Migrations. Oldred is built on the site of an old, razed Flan city.[1] Oeridians settled the area at least 600 years prior, given the burial catacombs at Claw Point have been there that long.[1]

The lands were presumably first settled by the Suel, then by the Oeridians who intermixed.[2] The Nehron tribe settled the area, creating the kingdom of Nehron which became Nyrond. The initial realm of Nyrond was defeated by the then Kingdom of Aerdy at the Battle of a Fortnight's Length in -110 CY, resulting in it becoming then known as the Great Kingdom.[3]

The Great Kingdom[edit]

The Overkings appointed viceroys to rule the major provinces, who had near total autonomy to efficiently deal with local problems answering only to the Malachite Throne. By 100 CY, there were 4 such viceroys including the Viceroyalty of Nyrond. It eventually included Urnst, and was ruled from Rel Mord by a junior branch of House Rax.[4]

While strategically important to the new Great Kingdom, the ruling house of the land was made subservient to the eastern House Rax which ruled the territory from an impressive series of castles and fortresses centered on the imposing palace at Rel Mord. The Rax nobles exhibited insufferable arrogance, even if not as vile or ruthless as some eastern houses. When House Rax gained the Malachite Throne, Nyrond became ever more important to the affairs of the Overking. Increased attention meant higher taxes and greater headaches for the local landholders. When Ferrond rebelled in 254 CY, the Overking drew on the armies of Nyrondal nobles and thousands of Nyrond's men and women fell in the conflicts.[5]

Independence[edit]

In 356 CY bickering between the Aerdi and Nyrondal nobles exploded into violent political conflict. The local lords declared Nyrond free of the Overking's rule and named one of their own number, the wily Medven I, king of Nyrond. Every Nyrondal lord sponsored troops to an enormous gathering on the nation's eastern border.[5]

Weakened by warfare against the likes of Ferrond, Perrenland, and Tenh, the scions of House Rax nonetheless amassed a large retribution-minded army to teach the upstart "kingdom" a lesson. At this moment, a coalition of Fruztii, Schnai and mercenary barbarians invaded North Province, distracting the Overking's army and allowing Nyrond critical time to entrench and train its military to repulse Aerdi military actions.[6]

Shield Against the Great Kingdom[edit]

For the next two centuries relations between the two states varied from open war to preparing for war. Nyrond during that period was the major protection for the Flanaess against the Great Kingdom.[7]

Nyrond was left after obtaining independence with a huge army and great ambition. Within three years, it had annexed the newly formed Theocracy of the Pale, burning Wintershiven to the ground. A later foray into the County of Urnst met with equal (if less violent) success. Further expansion met resistance by the Duchy of Urnst at the Nesser River, where its galleys halted progress. The new "Grand Empire of Nyrond" then watched as House Rax's rule degenerated. The Turmoil Between Crowns beginning in 437 CY with the assassination of Overking Nalif led within nine years to House Naelax taking the Malachite Throne. With chaos and madness ruling from Rauxes, King Dunstan I knew Nyrond needed allies against the Great Kingdom. He could not pledge Nyrond's public support due to Ivid I's Northern Army massed near Innspa, but he attended the conference in Chathold that resulted in the formation of the Iron League where he privately assured support. Dunstan made good on that pledge, sending weapons and Nyrondal warships (although no troops) to aid besieged Irongate at the Battle of a Thousand Banners in 447 CY.[5]

In his old age, Dunstan I, called Dunstan the Crafty, saw the Great Kingdom had survived two civil wars, and that Ivid had entrenched his rule. With the threat of internal strife and external enemies in Harvester 450 CY he called the Great Council of Rel Mord.[7][5]

Delegates from every Nyrondal principality and subject state attended, as did representatives from Almor, the Iron League, the Duchy of Urnst, and the Domain of Greyhawk. After a month and a half of negotiation, Nyrondal troops were to withdraw from the Pale and the County of Urnst, and internal borders realigned. Almor also gained independence. Nyrond publicly supported the Iron League and rebuked the Great Kingdom. Nyrond entered a period of supremacy as castle-building programs dotted the central plains with fortifications, cities expanded, and commerce boomed. The nation gained a reputation for powerful mages and skillful artisans.[8]

Pre-Greyhawk Wars[edit]

In about 575 CY combined Nyrondel-Almorian forces moved into the lower Bone March and captured Knurl. This, along with incursions by humanoids across the Teesar Torrent into the North Province, led to a punitive force of mercenaries being dispatched in retaliation. However, the force was defeated in the hills above Belport, leading to Herzog Grenell seeking Imperial funding of a large army to recapture the southern Bone March.[7]

In 578 CY in late Needfest a proclamation of war was issued against the Great Kingdom by Nyrond, the Almor, and their allies.[9] In 579 CY reacting to increased militarism by the Great Kingdom, Nyrond, Almor, and the Iron League banded together to form the Golden League which fought the War of the Golden League over the next 2 years, and drained both sides financially and militarily to no real outcome.[8]

In 583 CY Archbold led a huge army through the Nutherwood hoping to defeat the Stonefist occupation of Tenh under Sevvord Redbeard. This was in part to bolster his popularity in Nyrond's north, but also to counter accusations he had allowed the troublesome Tenh to collapse. Elven contingents allowed the army to infiltrate the Phostwood and overwhelm the few Stonefist forces there. They then burst from the forest to attack the main Stonefist forces. Sevvord executed some commanders as an example and sacrificed forces to allow the rest to muster near the village of Ternsmay, where he was outnumbered but held the better ground. Fighting lasted for an entire day and into the night, and Stonefist forces fell back, but Nyrond lost 3,000 soldiers and Archbold suffered grievous wounds. The battle ended in a stalemate.[8][10]

Greyhawk Wars[edit]

Months later, as part of a widespread attack against various realms[11], Ivid's Northern Army converged on Innspa and Almor seemed certain to fall before the might of the Glorioles regiments. Archbold amassed the largest force in Nyrond's history in response, leaving crops to wither in the fields and bandits free to roam. As 583 came to a close, Nyrond signed the Eastern Pact of Alliance with various allies in Oldred to ensure the containment of Ivid's armies, but the Theocracy of the Pale refused to due to Nyrond's many "heresies".[12] However, the Scarlet Brotherhood soon took Idee and Onnwal. Irongate and Sunndi were too geographically isolated and involved in their own struggles to assist under the Pact. Almor was defeated, and by the end of 584 CY Nyrond could count only on aid from the Urnst States.[8]

During 584 CY Nyrond halted the inevitable invasion by the Great Kingdom that came after Ivid V's forces destroyed Almor. Nyrond held off the fiend reinforced armies of the Great Kingdom in a series of bloody victories including the Battle of Blazebane and the Battle of Karndred's Meadows. The imperial armies were undermined by Ivid taking control in the field, while staying in Rauxes, and the chain of command being reduced to chaos.[13]

After Ivid V was assassinated during Richfest then reanimated, the massacres that ensued in the Great Kingdom caused Archbold to launch counterattacks against the Army of the North between Womtham and Innspa which lacked support due to the political chaos. Herzog Grenell of the North Province rebelled against the Overking to try to stop Nyrond. Grenell and the orcs of the Bone March halted the Nyrondese armies in the Flinty Hills, callously sacrificing human and orcish troops to grind Archbold's advance to a halt. Although he could advance no further against the combined armies, tantalized by the prospect of ultimate victory Archbold refused to break off his assault. Meanwhile, the South Province also seceded, and the Great Kingdom fragmented.[14]

During the Greyhawk Wars Nyrond lost some 60,000 to 70,000[15] dead in battle against the Great Kingdom, as well as the financial cost on the kingdom which resulted in heavy taxes. Some 120,000 also fled the realm seeking work or safety.[16]

Ascension of Lynwerd[edit]

In the fall of 585 CY Archbold appeared to suffer a stroke. Clerics convened in Rel Mord and determined that he had been poisoned. Within hours of the discovery, Archbold's younger son Prince Sewarndt and a group of military officers attempted a coup. Only the intervention of the capital's entire clergy of Heironeous prevented it. By the time Lynwerd could lead an army to his father's side, Sewarndt and a handful of his cohorts had fled. Sewarndt's treachery shattered Archbold, and he abdicated in favor of Lynwerd in Fireseek, 586 CY.[8]

In his first year on the throne, Lynwerd seized the western half of Almor, realigned the command structure of his military, and reduced taxes to prewar levels. While the tax reductions boosted morale, its economy remained in deficit and debt. In 589 CY a long-planned marriage between Lynwerd and Lady Xenia Sallavarian was scheduled to take place in Richfest. In Wealsun, Lady Xenia collapsed and remained in a coma for some years. In 590 CY with starvation and sedition common, Lynwerd initiated a number of radical policy shifts including reducing the size of the royal court and restructuring Nyrond's internal political boundaries.[17]

In Spring 591 CY Lynwerd announced a Grand Celebration of the fifth year of coronation in Rel Mord to be held during Growfest. Invitations were to be sent out by the newly expanded Royal Mail Service to all Nyrondese nobility and allied states.[18] At this gala Lynwerd was to make a declaration as to the final status of the former Almorian lands then under Nyrondal control with speculation at court divided on what it would be be. Many supported granting the area full status as a Royal Duchy, and others wishing it to be an independent nation.[19] Durinken, High Priest of Rao, announced portents that the year's crop would be the largest in decades.[20]

Lynwerd was married to Xenia Sallavarian in 594 CY. In 595 CY Sewarndt again seized control of Rel Mord and other key cities in a short and rapid coup, but was deposed.[21]

Geography[edit]

Nyrond lies between the Nesser River and Franz River to the west, the Harp River and Flinty Hills to the east, Relmor Bay to the south, and the Theocracy of the Pale to the north.

Nyrond also appears to hold the narrow strip of coastland west of the Nesser River, including the settlement of Darkshelf on the coast of the Sea of Gearnat (rather than Relmor Bay which lies to the east of the Nesser River), south of the Bright Desert.[22]

Climate[edit]

The local climate is temperate, with moderate snowfall in the winter months. Summers in the nation's interior tend to be very dry and quite hot, with cool, pleasant evenings throughout much of the year.[23]

Regions and Settlements[edit]

In 585 CY Nyrond could be divided into seven convenient, broad regions.[24] Each area had its own typical level of morale, style of rulership, and social attitudes found in most of its towns, cities and people.[25] They were, and included the following settlement or notable locations:

These regions were reorganized administratively in 591 CY as set out below.

People[edit]

Population and Demographics[edit]

The population of human citizens in 576 CY was estimated at about 1,375,000, with Rel Mord's population 46,500. Nyrond was noted as having sizable populations of sylvan elves, gnomes and halflings.[32]

The population in 591 CY was estimated at about 2,781,800[33], being Human 79% (Os), Elf 9%(sylvan 90%, high 10%), Halfling 5% (stout), Dwarf 3%, Gnome 2%, Half-elf 1%, Half-orc 1%.[34]

Most of humans are of Oeridian heritage, with a strong Suel influence in the south and a mix of Flan from the region’s original inhabitants. High elves dwell on the fringes of the Gamboge Forest, with wood elves in the deeper reaches of the woods woods and in the Celadon Forest to the southeast. Gnomes and dwarves populate the Flinty Hills.[35]

Populations for major towns in 591 CY were Arndulanth (pop. 2,300), Arnford (pop. 3,900), Beetu (pop. 12,100), Borneven (pop.9,900), Callistor (pop. 4,300), Cordrend (pop. 5,000), Curtulenn (pop. 5,200), Greenplane (pop. 1,600), Hammensend (pop. 9,000), Hendrenn Halgood (pop. 14,800), Kerrinn (pop. 3,500), Midmeadow (pop. 11,100), Mithat (pop. 29,000), Mowbrenn (pop. 20,700), Nessermouth (pop. 3,100), Oldred (pop. 22,000), Rel Mord (pop. 46,500), Swan Bore (pop. 2,800), Womtham (pop. 19,200), Woodwych (pop. 24,300), Wragby (pop. 7,300).[23]

Religion[edit]

The main religions are the worship of Heironeous, Beory, Rao, Pelor, Zilchus, Norebo, Pholtus, Ralishaz, Boccob, Delleb, and Celestian.[23]

Following the Greyhawk Wars superstitions and the worship of evil gods (including Hextor and Incabulos) began to grow as a sign of the despair of the common folk.[36]

Languages[edit]

The main languages spoken in Nyrond are Common, Nyrondese, Old Oeridian, Elven, and Halfling.[23]

Nyrond features a local dialect known as Nyrondese, a High Oeridian dialect of Common which is spoken in some areas of Nyrond. It is a primary language particularly for peasants, shopkeepers, and similar. Learned people almost always (in 576 CY) speak Common as well. [37]

Government[edit]

Administrative divisions[edit]

The kings have always held the power to strip nobles of their landholdings and grant them to others to be administered. Prior to 591 CY not all land or parts of regions were the subject to the rule of titled nobles. Many towns, villages and areas were under the administrative rule of bailiffs appointed by the King, as they could be more easily controlled and replaced. Bailiffs are also employed by nobles to raise taxes. Most of the administration of the lands was done by the appointees of the king’s powerful bailiff-general, whose representatives collected all taxes and tithes including those imposed by local landholders.[45]

In late 590 CY, King Lynwerd restructured Nyrond's provinces in a manner that rewarded those lords who remained loyal to his father during his brother's brief revolt, and his system also provided increased revenue to the Royal Treasury. This came into effect on Needfest 1, 591 CY being (in alphabetical order)[46]:

In the Living Greyhawk campaign, the Almorian Protectorate later became the Duchy of Almor in 592 CY.[48]

Executive branch[edit]

Nyrond is ruled by a hereditary monarch, being since 586 CY King Lynwerd I.

The monarch has always held the power to strip nobles of their landholdings and grant them to others to be administered, which was justified on the basis the king must have this power to ensure the common people would not be ruled by greedy nobles that would overtax them. Traditionally monarchs create their own advisory councils, and can veto any appointment a temple might propose to the court usually with a polite and plausible reason. As such, the kings of Nyrond enjoyed something close to absolute power.[45]

See see also Rulers of Nyrond.

Legislative branch[edit]

There is no legislative branch in Nyrond, as the king wields close to absolute power as outlined above.

Judicial branch[edit]

Alleged crimes were divided into criminal and civil offenses. Civil offenses were usually settled by the ancient practice of duelling usually with paid champions standing in for defendant and accuser. Heironeous was relied on to guide the hand of the righteous so this was an acceptable way of settling matters. However, given the loss of fighting men in the Greyhawk Wars, inflicting serious injury in such duels was by 585 CY a criminal offense and more civil cases were being decided by magistrates. Magistrates were usually low level priests of a lawful neutral or lawful good deity such as Rao or Zilchus.[49]

Criminal offenses were divided into:

  • Grievous Crimes (such as murder, sedition, and treason);
  • Injurious Crimes (such as serious assault, tomb robbing, major destruction of property, rioting, magical misconduct and the like), and
  • Crimes of Disrepute (minor infringements such as minor assault, bootlegging, coin clipping, minor fraud, and bribery of minor officials).

Minor offenses were regarded as more serious if they resulted in impairment of rebuilding and defense work. Trials for criminal offenses were presided over by magistrates as for civil matters, save for Grievous Crimes which were investigated by a three-member panel of judges, being higher ranking priests of suitable deities. Magical interrogations were standard practice in cases of alleged Grievous Crimes, but not in lesser cases. Sentences handed down to those found guilty varied somewhat from province to province, but Grievous Crimes usually merited death or banishment usually accompanied by the severance of a limb or the placing of a curse or geas on the criminal. With other crimes, some nobles levied heavy fines which added to the noble coffers. Some opted for forced conscription into levies, but this was frowned upon as little more than slavery. Others preferred imprisonment or banishment.[49]

By 585 CY corruption had infested the legal system in many places, so that crimes could be overlooked in return for a bribe. Militias might extract spot fines for many crimes, including ones that they fabricated. However, generally law in Nyrond outside the big cities and central provinces was administered as local rulers see fit and varied according to local circumstances and the ruler.[50]

With the poor economy after the Greyhawk Wars, by 591 CY banditry was on the rise. Because the country was in such dire economic straits, heavy fines were favored over imprisonment (for all but the very worst offenses). Debtors prisons, which were a new development in law enforcement, dotted the countryside.[50][23]

Heraldry[edit]

Nyrond's coat of arms is blazoned thus: Quarterly; first and fourth, ermine; Second and third, gules, a sun radiated or.

Economy[edit]

Resources[edit]

Foodstuffs, cloth, copper, silver, gems.[7][23]

Nyrond has always exported food to the Theocracy of the Pale, and continued doing so after the Greyhawk Wars when its own people were starving as it required the currency to be earned as well as to maintained ties with the Pale.[50]

Mineral wealth is contributed to the kingdom’s economy by the gnomes and dwarves of the Flinty Hills.[51] Nyrond's loss of part of the Flinty Hills to the humanoids of the Bone March during the Greyhawk Wars reduced the wealth extracted as a result.[50]

Currency[edit]

The currency of Nyrond is the Common (cp), Shield (sp), Noble (gp), Shinepiece (ep), and Sterling (pp).[23]

The Royal Mint was located in the capital, Rel Mord, but moved to Womtham in 577 CY to be closer to the source of coinage metals (from the Flinty Hills).[52]

Taxes[edit]

In Spring 591 CY Lynwerd sanctioned the creation of citizens as Licensed Adventurers, to be entrusted with special works and missions for the kingdom. Such also rescinded for Licensed Adventures the Law of Reclamation, an ancient law that all treasures found in the king's lands belonged to the king, allowing them to keep 4/5 the value of goods and treasure found in the act of adventuring in the kingdom and pay only 1/5 as tax to the crown.[53]

Transportation[edit]

Nyrond has an extensive system of primary and secondary roads. Toll roads and paths are common.[54][23] As of 591 CY major roadways remained in ruin, making travel difficult. In certain provinces, trade was nearly impossible.

Nyrond has a mail service paid for by the king. It ceased running during or soon after the Greyhawk Wars due to lack of available funds.[55] By 591 CY it had returned to active duty, and communications were reestablished between the capital and all major nobles,[23] including from Spring 591 CY along the Duntide River south of Rel Mord with the assistance of the militia.[56]

Nyrond has two great rivers, the Nesser River (into which the Franz River flows at the borders of Nyrond, the Duchy of Urnst, and County of Urnst) and the Duntide River. The Nesser-Franz is the natural border with the Duchy and County of Urnst (respectively), and navigable within Nyrond for virtually all of its length, up to the lock complex at Kerrinn, although hazardous within the Gnatmarsh due to the fauna there. The Duntide is a broad, slow river like the Nesser-Franz and navigable as far north as Womtham.[54]

In the aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars as of spring 585 CY along many primary roads local militias might escort merchants, even adventurers and farmers, charging them by the mile for their "protection". Similarly, river militias on the Duntide might charge merchant vessels for same, but failed to continue alongside the Gnatmarsh where such was actually required.[54]

Military[edit]

In 576 CY the majority of Nyrond's army comprised heavy cavalry and armored footmen, with lesser numbers of bowmen and light hillmen infantry as support. In addition to human forces, Nyrond also had special demi-human scouting troops. Nyrondal contingents assisted Urnst and the Pale against the Bandit Kingdoms. A squadron of warships sailed Relmor Bay and the Sea of Gearnat in support of the Iron League. Strong garrisons were stationed in strategic positions to support either Almor or the Pale. Pacts with the Duchy of Urnst, County of Urnst and others could call upon support.[7]

In 578 CY military forces from western Nyrond has mustered in in around Oldred readying for a joint Nyrond-Almor attack on the Great Kingdom. The force was under the joint command of Admiral Auriel Lexis (Nyrond) and Counter Stephen Bulhart (presumably Almor). It was listed as comprising:

  • 13 warships
  • 8 large galleys
  • 57 transports
  • 1,000 Nyrondian marines
  • 400 light cavalry
  • 1,000 heavy foot
  • 2,500 medium foot
  • 3,700 levies

The forces were described as mainly volunteers, with many petty commanders and adventurer types present.[57][note 1]

In 585 CY the Nyrondese Navy was still relatively powerful despite the Greyhawk Wars. There had been losses against Ahlissan vessels during the wars, but offset by the successful flight of a few Onnwal galleys and caravels to Nyrond when it fell to the Scarlet Brotherhood. The navy maintained a total force in Relmor Bay of 9 galleys, 30 caravels and 20 coasters under the command of Fleet Admiral Hugarnd.[41]

In 591 CY Nyrond's armies were commanded by General Myariken, a young buck said to be great friends with King Lynwerd. Many of the peasant and freemen levies had returned to their farms, but major regiments remained in Old Almor and Womtham. Special elf scouting regiments, centered in Woodverge and Flinthill, once provided strong service to the crown, but had failed to report for the previous three years due to conflicts over exploitation of the Celadon Forest.[23]

By 591 CY with the decreased need for military forces, many of the Kingdom's Militia were allowed leave. Many of these ex-soldiers became Licensed Adventurers of the Kingdom.[58]

Nyrond in the Living Greyhawk campaign[edit]

In the Living Greyhawk campaign, the following events took place in Nyrond:

  • The mail service resumed running in 591 CY.
  • King Lynwerd and Queen Xenia's daughter and heir was born in 595 CY.
  • Sewarndt's coup in 595 CY captured the capital city, Rel Mord, with the assistance of supernatural allies, and in the course of the assault he killed Archbold. In autumn 595 CY, several campaigns around the country, led by Lynwerd's supporters and loyal nobles, succeeded in recapturing nearly all major provinces and cities. The reconquest ended when Sewarndt died at the hands of his brother at the very gates of the Royal Palace in Rel Mord.
