Warnes Starcoat is a powerful human wizard, and a member of the Circle of Eight since 585 CY. He is also a Counselor to the Joint Courts of Urnst[1] and Chief Sorcerous Councilor (an office also known as "Chief Magical Councilor") to Duke Karll of the Duchy of Urnst.

Description[edit]

Warnes is tall, lean, and wiry.[2] He is "a greatly-refined gentleman of Suel ethnicity, though his complexion is tanned from spending much of his time outdoors."[3] He has long, blonde hair, though he has a bald spot.[4][2] His beard is short and well-trimmed.[2] He has piercing, pale gray eyes.[4][2]

Warnes wears the Starcoat, a magical coat "as black as the night that glimmers with distant stars",[3] though it has also been described as "deep violet color with six small eight-pointed stars on chest".[2], and is rarely seen without his wide-brimmed, plumed hat with a dark blue stripe[3], though he doffs it when indoors.{{[2]

Relationships[edit]

Warnes does not wish Agath of Thrunch to outshine him.[1] Alhamazad dislikes him. Jallarzi Sallavarian was his student when she was a teenager.[5] Bigby only grudgingly agreed to admit him into the Circle. Theodain Eriason views him with suspicion, while Warnes in turn views Theodain as an unreliable firebrand whose methods are morally questionable at best.

The number of siblings Warnes has is unclear. He has being called the "third son of four"[3] and "the oldest of five children".[2]

Warnes' patron deity is Zagyg.

He dislikes thieves and hates working with them, unless they ar emilitary-trained such as spies, saboteurs, and scouts.[1][2]

Possessions[edit]

Warnes has carried a variety of magic items over the years, and likely has access to even more as a member of the Circle off Eight. Those he has owned include: beaker ofplentiful potions, brooch of shielding, hat of feather falling, pouch of holding, ring of regeneration, ring of wizardry, Robe of Stars, staff of thunder and lightning, stone of good luck, and Zagyg's Spell Component Pouch,[1] as well as oil of slipperiness, bag of transmuting, helm of comprehending language and reading magic, pearl of power, ring of contrariness, wand of paralyzation, wand of negation,[1] bracers of defense, boots of springing and striding, and cloak of displacement.[6]

Warnes is especially noted for wearing a Robe of Stars, the origin of his sobriquet.[1]

Activities[edit]

At various times, Warnes has been known to stay in one of the three rooms at the High Tower Tavern in the Garden Quarter in the Free City of Greyhawk, which is the customary meeting place of the Circle of Eight.

Warnes led the effort to retrieve the Crook of Rao from the Isle of the Ape, thwarting the machinations of Iggwilv.[1][4][7]

History[edit]

Warnes was born in 534 CY in Leukish, capital of the Duchy of Urnst, to a merchant family of moderate influence and wealth.[3] He was sent to the city of Seltaren when he came of age, to study magic at the Wizardholme of Urnst.[3] Warnes proved to be quite talented, becoming a well-regarded generalist mage before the age of thirty.[3] He was soon made a junior assistant to the Seer of Urnst, but left the position due to philosophical differences. Warnes' victory over the Weird of Gnatmarsh[1][3] made him the most respected wizard in the region.

He was appointed to the Circle of Eight in 585 CY.[8]

In 592 CY, Warnes was a part of the storyline involving the Isles of Woe returning to the world.

""Concerned by stories of the resurfacing of the Isles of Woe. the archmage Warnes Starcoat sponsors an expedition into the Brass Hills to explore a site called the Zochal. According to the Nesser Opuscule, the only surviving fragment of a greater work attributed to the legendary Tzunk, the Zochal is an echo point for the planar confluence that infuses the once lost sunken isles."[9][10]"
