Badwall, or properly the Lands of Badwall, is an inland city-state of the Wild Coast.
In later years, it is conquered and destroyed by the Orcish Empire of the Pomarj during the Greyhawk Wars.
Note: Not to be confused with "Badwall Isle", a smaill islet off the coast of the Isle of Dread.
Geography
[edit | edit source]Badwall lies on the Wild Coast. It is inland of Elredd to the east and Fax to the north-northeast, which are both on the shores of Woolly Bay. On its three other sides, Badwall is bordered by forests. The Suss Forest stretches to the south and to the west, forming those borders of Badwall's lands, and the Welkwood forms the northern border. Further west, through the Suss, across the Jewel River is the neighboring kingdom of Celene.
History
[edit | edit source]Orcs and other savage humanoids guard the occupied and devastated city from Readying 584 CY onward. Some of Badwall's army "deserted and fled northward" when the city was overrun during the Greyhawk Wars by the Orcish Empire of the Pomarj.[1] The city is ruined, and mostly empty of humans.[2]
People
[edit | edit source]Population
[edit | edit source]The population of human citizens in 576 CY is 5,200.[3][4]
The population is unknown in 591 CY, but estimated at possibly 3,300.[5]
Notable individuals
[edit | edit source]The aged ranger Darda Krath is a resident of Badwall before the city was ruined during the Greyhawk Wars.[6]
In Legends of Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]| This section contains content from the "Legends of Greyhawk" organized-play campaign. While it is officially published, and is approved by WotC, this content is based on the DMG 2024, and may differ from earlier publications. |
In the Legends of Greyhawk campaign, set in 576 CY, the West Coast Adventurer's Guild (WCAG) runs organzied play events at conventions. One of the two regions they produce adventures set in, is the Wild Coast.[7]—the region was originally set to premier at LA ComicCon, 26 September 2025. But about two weeks later, three adventures premiered at a new online convention called Dice Online 2025, on 10-12 October 2025.[8].
Even though the region does use most settlements in the area, it does not necessarily utilize every location on the Wild Coast in the premiers. Badwall is not (yet) used for adventures,[9] but it is referenced.[10]
Rumors and legends
[edit | edit source]There have long been rumors of "a once-sleeping cabal of vampires... entombed somewhere beneath the city." Orcs may have disturbed them somehow in 591 CY.[6]
Though it is uncertain, Badwall may have been founded by descendants of a "ruined city of the Suloise" in the Suss Forest which is "thought to have been a river port along the Jewel." [11]
