Rary the Traitor by Ben Wooten (Nov 2011), depicting the death of Otiluke.[1].

The Battle of the Grand Hall is the magical clash taking place on the Day of Great Signing of the Treaty of Greyhawk, at the end of the Greyhawk Wars.

A magical battle erupts in the Grand Hall[2] (also called the Old City Great Hall or just the Great Hall (T21).[3][4][5] Rary the Traitor of Ket sets magical traps of "lethal spells ... [in] the stone, the wood, and the air itself: spells designed to kill everyone at the ceremony", including the ambassadors and Circle of Eight members present, in an attempt to stop the Great Signing. Bigby, Tenser, and Otiluke come to the Great Hall for an eleventh-hour check of the premisis, and stumble upon Rary, catching him whilst working on the magical ambush. Immediately, these four of the most powerful mages in the Flanaess break into battle. Rary first attempts to flee,[6][7] but when he is cornered, turns against his former allies and releases the still incomplete traps, setting them off in rounds as each Circle member joins the fray.[5]

This "horrifying spell combat" spills out into the Old City, after a "blazing explosion"[8] erupts from the Great Hall from the traps, causing a "second great fire"[4], and resulting in further damage to the "Old Burn Block." There are massive casualties with the deaths of 50 bystanders.[4] (it is unclear whether the deaths are from the battle or the ensuing fire.)

Otiluke and Tenser of the Circle of Eight are murdered by Rary, and "nothing was left of their bodies to allow revival by clone, resurrection or any other spell" and "could not be resurrected."[9][2] Lord Robilar sided with Rary and atttacked Tenser's and Otiluke's towers at the same time, and destroyed the clones they already had, making their deaths irreversible. Bigby narrowly made it through the onslaught, and Rary is seen afterward fleeing with Robilar into the Bright Desert.[10] Word quickly spreads that Rary had turned traitor and slayed his former friends.[6][7]
