In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Brotton is both the name of a metropolis, and the name of the archbarony which is overseen from its namesake capital.

Description

[edit | edit source]

the town square of is roughly 120ft from end to end with a huge stone fountain formed by the shapes of three unicorns rearing on their hind legs and shooting streams of water from their horns and hooves in the center. Taverns, inns, and merchant stalls surround the square.[3]

Geography and climate

[edit | edit source]

Brotton is in the Dreerwode [pr. trans. dreary wood], with the Grey Hills forming the archbarony's northern border.[4]

Settlements in the barony
  • Brotton
  • Mennan
  • Zimm—eight miles northwest up the main road from Brotton[5] By 595 CY, Zimm's population increases 1,000% from refugees from Nyrond.[6]
    • Roadside Tavern[5]
    • Abandoned chapel to Heironeous northeast of the village near a hill shaped like an eagle's head.[5]
    • The Rotten Apple is a tavern on the road northeast of Zimm.[7]
The County of Urnst region in LG used psuedo-Eruopean names formed from a variety of different real-world languages, e.g.—word endings meaning "forest" such as vudd, wood, and wode.

Notable locations

[edit | edit source]

The following locations are found in the city of Brotton:

  • Besotted Stallion[8]—tavern
  • Black Hound—inn[9]
  • Elks Head Tankard—tavern in Brotton's town square.[3]
  • Harvest inn—three-story building some one hundred paces from Brotton's north gate down a narrow cobblestone road.[10]
  • Nockwood and Sons—shipping company which deals primarily in grains.[11]
  • Salty Swine—tavern[12]
  • Red Wyrm’s Nest—inn[6]

History

[edit | edit source]

As an old Suloise capital, and the oldest city in the county, Brotton maintains a role in governing.[13]

People

[edit | edit source]

Population

[edit | edit source]

In 591 CY the population of the Brotton itself stands at roughly 29,000.[14] However, there are numerous unnamed shanty towns of innumerable refugees from Nyrond surrounding the city.[15] By late spring 591, the continuous influx of refugees begins to slow, putting the local administrators at ease.[16]

Notable individuals

[edit | edit source]
  • Bandarin (male human Ftr7 LG)—works for House Dane[17]
  • Codiet (male human Com4 LN)—works for House Dane[17]
  • Gelfin Halfelven—owns an extensive farm 4 miles south of Brotton.[18]
  • Markle Tinderbox (male gnome Exp3)—is a silversmith.[12]
  • Meacham Manybulls—one of eight cattle ranchers around Brotton. His ranch is southeast near the Dreerwode.[8]
  • Regas Thornwhistle—truffle farmer,[19]
  • Lady Vespa—spice shop owner, uses herbs she grows at her farm.[20]

Noble houses

[edit | edit source]

The hereditary rulers of the Archbarony of Brotton are from House Dane. They control much of the Urnstian horse trade. House Steiner's seat of power is in Brotton.

Religion

[edit | edit source]

Some common faiths in the Archbarony of Brotton include Ehlonna,[3] Lydia[3], and Heironeous.[citation needed]

A temple of Zodal lies just south of the City of Brotton. It was built on the ruins of a temple to Kyuss in ages past.[21] The modern temple is maintained by Beltha Yoro (female human Clr5) and four layman clergy.[22] The temple sits on a small island and has a drawbridge to protect them from enemies if needed.[23]

Government

[edit | edit source]

Brotton is the seat of the Archbarony of Brotton, which in the 590s CY is governed by Archbaron Artin Delar Dane who also holds the civic title of Lord Mayor. The city is effectively ruled by its merchant guilds, with its 12 members, and the baron only casting a vote as needed.

Lord Artin Delar Dane is Lord Brotton until spring 591 CY when he is killed by bandits during a hunting trip near Radigast City. His brother, Lord Erthan Dane, takes over as Lord Brotton.[24]

The Barony of Deerwode is a subdivision of the Archbarony of Brotton and, thus, a vassal province.[25]

Resources

[edit | edit source]

Brotton is the breadbasket of the county and exports large shipments of foodstuffs.[9]
