Causeway of Fiends is an unnatural, enormous path of stones, existing even before the Ur-Flannae, with a strong magical and evil aura. It extends from half a mile inland, out into the Solnor Ocean and all the way to the Isle of Lost Souls.[1][2]

Description

[edit | edit source]

The causeway is comprised of sparkling[2] granite slabs,[1][2] the largest of which are 25' wide and 12' high,[1] which are evenly arranged in a clear path that leads out into the sea. The causeway is never submerged in water, even when the tides in the surrounding area are high enough that logically it should be.

Every time Celene is full, fiends appear and do battle of the causeway. They are bound to the causeway and cannot go further inland. [1][2]

About once every 80 to 100 years, massive legions of fiends appear on the causeway and nearby mainland. They never go on the Isle itself, but battle and disport themselves, engaging in vile bloodbath.[1][2]

History

[edit | edit source]

Delglath, the animus leader of Rinloru, has used stones from the causeway to craft dark magical artifacts. Though there are ancient accounts of Ur-Flannae mystics and others making such artifacts, Delglath is the only one in living memory to have done so, since the risk is so high, potentially leading to opening up a portal from which a deadly fiend emerges.[1][2]

Geography

[edit | edit source]

The isle lays off the northeastern point of the North Province in the Great Kingdom, and later the North Kingdom, just east of Kaport Bay[3]

Rumors and legends

[edit | edit source]

The water surrounding the Causeway and the Isle of Lost Souls is said to be cursed, and most sailors would rather jump ship with a prayer to Procan rather than sail near it, while sentient sea creatures such as selkies and sea elves try and warn away any approaching ships. The rumors say that the soul of any creature lost at sea in the waters surrounding the causeway and the island are trapped forever on the island, forced to endure unimaginable torment[1].

Creative origins

[edit | edit source]

The causeway is heavily inspired by the Causeway of Giants off the coast of Ireland.
