Ehlonna's Scar is a deep crevice in the southern Yatil Mountains, which joins an underground river to form a small passage across the Yatils from west to east.
Ecology
[edit | edit source]Environment and geography
[edit | edit source]
Ehlonna's Scar covers slightly more than half the distance from Polvar to Highfolk.[2][note 1] There is a stream at its base, formed from spring runoff in the Yatils, which has cut through the rock to form the canyon.[2]
It is a deep crevice, about four times deeper than it is across. It is a narrow and dangerous rift where light does not reach well, and it deepens from west to east, descending from 225 ft. to 350 ft.
Ten miles outside Polvar, in the eastern edge of Ket, lies a fort with a wooden palisade surrounding it, and an enormous platform deck overhanging the chasm that begins Ehlonna's Scar. A system of pulleys and counterweights below the platform raise and lower an elevator from the top down into the slender rift.
There are hot springs and periodically erupting geysers in various places in the Scar. Rock slides are not uncommon.[2]
At its end, the Scar's stream enters a cave opening, joins with a larger flow, and becomes a tributary of the Scuttlerun River, an underoerth waterway which extends the rest of the distance to Highfolk.
Flora and fauna
[edit | edit source]There is an entire ecosystem thriving in the canyon. Some natural creatures include: arrowhawks, assassin vines, feral baboons, giant eagles, giant insects like centipedes and wasps; and shocker lizards.
Ehlonna's scar is also rife with monsters, including cockatrices, dragonnes, ethereal filchers, formians, gibbering mouthers, stirges, and worse.[3]

[edit | edit source]Notes
[edit | edit source]- ↑ The scale of the map showing Ehlonna's Scar in the Yatils is inconsistent with other official maps. The straight-line distance between Polvar and Highfolk is approximately 120 miles. However, environs map in the adventure illustrates them as about 225 miles apart, and the Scar as about 135 miles long (by the scale given on the map). The text of the adventure states the canyon is 40 miles long, but by scale on other maps, a little more than half the distance from Polvar to Highfolk measures about 75 miles. Additionally, the travel distances given in the adventure for encounters inside the canyon do not add up to 40 or 75, and the Scar is consistently illustrated as being 100 ft. wide rather than "rarely more than 60 feet" as described in the text.[1]
