Hastern is a prince of House Naelax and ruler of Edgefield in the North Province of the Great Kingdom in 585 CY. He gained the land through a strategic marriage, though his wife and father-in-law died tragically.[1] He is turned into an animus c.584 CY by the overking who does not trust him, and he holds a good deal of bitterness toward the overking for that reason.[2]. He is one of the wealthiest princes in the reigon, both because of a youth spent committing various types of thievery,[2] and because of his tax policies on bandits seeking refuge in Edgefield.[3].

☛ In Ivid the Undying, the prince's name is spelled "Hastern" throughout, except in two instances where it is spelled "Halstern". This is most likely an editorial oversight.[3]

Description

[edit | edit source]

Appearance

[edit | edit source]

Harstern is 5' 6" tall, and looks to be slightly younger than his 35 years. The process of becoming an animus did not significantly alter his appearance. He has brown hair and gray eyes.[1]

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Hastern is exceptionally prone to bouts of rage and lashing out at those around him, especially after being turned into an animus. He has enough self-awareness to keep slaves and prisoners locked in the basement of his mansion on whom he can take out his rage rather than lashing out at his own people. He was quite intelligent before being turned and that intellect is still intact, even in undeath.[2]

Possessions

[edit | edit source]

Hastern has armed and armored himself with a number of magic items, including a short sword of speed +3, along with bracers of defense and a ring of protection with exceptionally strong enchantment.[1] He is also known to collect other magical trinkets, specifically favoring those used in thievery.[4]

Relationships

[edit | edit source]

Enemies

[edit | edit source]

Besides his burning hatred of the overking, Hastern has two main rivalries, Prince Strychan of Dustbridge and Countess Ishell of Rikerstone (who is a leigewoman to Prince Montand of Delaric), both of whom are in active boarder disputes along Edgefield's southern border.[3]
