Kaffet
Kaffet is a bitter drink popularized in Zeif[1] but found elsewhere in the Flanaess, as well.
The bushes growing the beans kaffet is brewed from are found in all along the western mountains in the Flanaess—the Yatils, Crystalmists,[1] and Hellfurnacess[2][3][4] as well as the islands of the Lordship of the Isles.
The crop itself is referred to as "coffee"[2][3][4] while the drink is called "kaffet." It is also said "kaffet beans" when referring to the beans as used or prepared specifically for the drink.
The coffee crop from which kaffet is made is frequently grown on large plantations, which are notably found in the Lordship of the Isles and the area surrounding Sasserine.[2][3][4] .
"Kaffet beans are harvested from mountain bushes grown in the Yatils and northern Crystalmists but go unnoticed throughout the Flanaess largely because of social enmities. A bitter tonic brewed from the roasted and ground beans is favored in the reaches of Zeif and now Ket and Bissel for its capacity to stave off weariness from lack of sleep.
Any who have had the opportunity in their long travels to test the reliability of these effects can attest they are as told. Sleep cannot be avoided eternally, of course, and the brew benefits greatly from the addition of honey or, as in the case of a visit to the Duchy of Ulek, elven raspberry sweet sauce."[1]
In Legends of Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]The Lordship of the Isles region includes kaffet as a primary theme for one of the characters in the region. In Turtleback Cove, one of the prominent figures is Danwurth Pahlthorpe, known as the "Kaffet Baron." He was once a smuggler (as many are in the town), but retired from that profession. He has a large, beautiful manor there, and roasts and sells beans and kaffet.
Creative origins
[edit | edit source]Kaffet isn't just an in-game version of or name for coffee. The name "kaffet" is a Swedish word derivation of "kaffe" (coffee) originally from Turkish/Arabic, and includes the definite article—"the coffee"; as in "Thanks for the coffee."
