Ecology

[edit | edit source]

The diet of kampfults is mostly comprised of small mammals and they almost never attempt to catch larger creatures. They prefer to prey upon solitary creatures or those which are vulnerable or weak.

The most common habitat of kampfults has changed over time. They are frequently found in ruins, tombs, underground structures, etc. They were once found in dense woodlands, but were "actively hunted down by humans."[1]

Kampfult are commonly found in the Amedio Jungle,[2] the Gnarley[3] and Suss forests, and the eastern Welkwood.[4]

Publication history

[edit | edit source]

The kampfult first appeared in the first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[5]

The kampfult appeared in second edition for the Greyhawk setting in the Monstrous Compendium Greyhawk Adventures Appendix (1990).[1]

In the original publication of the kampfult, they have a "trunk" which is described as a "slightly thicker body segment" in their "rope-like body". However, the illustration depicts a literal tree trunk rather than something like a creature's torso (trunk). The description in the later publication (MC5) includes phrases like "stump-like body segment" and "decayed stump of a cut-down tree," confusing the description a little, since it also says kampfult still have a "rope-like body" that can disguise itself among "vines and creepers" and "ropes or nets" which don't have anything which might resemble a tree trunk.
