Description
[edit | edit source]Duke Karll Lorinar is in his 40s,[note 1] and is a "tall, strong, handsome man tanned from a lifetime outdoors. His hair is brown, his eyes an icy green."[1]
Personality
[edit | edit source]Karll is a very even-tempered and reasonable person, though when difficulties with fighting against evil comes up, he finds it upsetting, sometimes to the point of being enraged about it being an nearly insurmountable task.[2] He is "kind hearted and a great friend to those he cares for."[3]
Abilities
[edit | edit source]Str 16, Int 14, Wis 14, Dex 14, Con 17, Cha 17[1]
Possessions
[edit | edit source]Because he is a high-level ranger, and a duke, he has access to magic items of significant power. When going to battle, he wears magical armor and shield—family heirlooms of which he is very proud—and a longbow; all of which are powerfully enchanted (+4).[1] The quiver he bears for the longbow holds arrows especially harmful to creatures of evil alignment. He also carries other various protective items.
Activities
[edit | edit source]As a very, very distant prospect for the throne, Karll spent much of his youth (teens and twenties) training at Stalwart Pines.[4][3] He would remain there, adventuring with the other rangers and warriors until he was at least 41.[4]
Relationships
[edit | edit source]His two eldest brothers both "were killed in a border war with desert nomad raiders," before 570 CY[note 2] and "his two sisters were assassinated by unknown enemies."[4] Both brothers preceded their father in death.[4]
Karll's third eldest brother is Justinian, who ruled the Duchy briefly in 570-571 CY,[3] but was branded a heretic for causing the Temple Coalition Revolt.[3]
Jolen Lorinar (NG male human Ftr8) is Karll's "eldest" son,[5] though the name of his other son(s) is not detailed.
He is distant cousins with Jallarzi Sallavarian.[6]
History
[edit | edit source]Karll Lorinar, youngest of six children of the Duke and Duchess of Urnst,[4] displayed an early passion for the outdoors. Unlikely to inherit the duchy, he eagerly pursued training as a ranger in the prestigious ranger school in the nearby Celadon Forest, Stalwart Pines, excelling in tracking and fighting giant-class creatures. By 21, he became a Runner and spent decades crusading against evil, often venturing alone into the wilderness.
Tragedy struck his family as his siblings died in wars and by assassinations, leaving Karll as the unexpected heir. Reluctantly abandoning his ranger life, he assumed the role of duke. It wasn't until c.581-582 CY (immediately prior to the Greyhawk Wars)[7] Karll realized the extent of the corruption in his government and began introducing reforms like changes in the military and incorporating ranger training into the army. Despite his initial reluctance, Karll committed to improving the duchy’s defenses and governance.[1]

[edit | edit source]Notes
[edit | edit source]- ↑ Karll is noted to be 21 when he is made a "Runner" for the ranger school at Stalwart Pines. Following that, it is "the next couple of decades" before he takes the throne.
- ↑ Though not explicitly stated, the two oldest brothers had to have passed away before Justinian could have ascended the throne. Justinian became duke in 570 CY.
