The Living Greyhawk Gazetter (LGG) is a sourcebook for the World of Greyhawk campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
Published in 2000 by Wizards of the Coast, the Living Greyhawk Gazetter was the first campaign sourcebook published for the game's third edition. Written by Gary Holian, Erik Mona, Sean K. Reynolds, and Frederick Weining (and edited by Roger E. Moore), the sourcebook updates and expands upon material covered by previous products, such as Gary Gygax's World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting and Carl Sargent's From the Ashes.
Despite the title, the Living Greyhawk Gazetter is considered a Greyhawk-general resource, and not exclusive to the Living Greyhawk campaign.

[edit | edit source]- Back cover text
"Make the world your own!
In proud Nyrond, a young king struggles to pull his wounded nation from the brink of civil war.
In the demonic realm of Iuz, the old one and his evil retinue plan the violent destruction of the lands of good.
In the Yatil Mountains, Mordenkainen the Archmage surveys the whole of the Flanaess, hatching schemes from his Obsidian Citadel.
And, at gaming tables everywhere, the future of Greyhawk setting turns on the roll of dice and the action of thousands of Dungeons & Dragons players!
This comprehensive sourcebook contains everything you need to get started in the RPGA network's exciting Living Greyhawk shared world campaign. Inside you'll find descriptions of dozens of nations and scores of deities, as well as hundreds of adventure hooks to get heroes immersed in the dangers of the world. In the Living Greyhawk campaign, you determine the fate of the Flanaess. It's your world!"
- Advertising text
The advertising blurb was slightly shorter for the Wizards.com website, and other online placement. It was the same as above, but did not include the lines with specific examples of locations, characters, or geography. It included essentially the first line and the last two paragraphs.
Publishing history
[edit | edit source]Living Greyhawk Gazetteer was released by Wizards of the Coast in November 2000 for $26.95 US or $41.95 Canadian.
The Dungeons & Dragons Gazetteer (2000) (3e), released two months earlier, had a condensed version of much the same content as in this work.
On February 02, 2016, it was re-released in digital format on DriveThruRPG and the Dungeon Masters Guild for $12.99.
Reception
[edit | edit source]Of the two gazetteers set in Greyhawk (the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and the D&D Gazetteer) published for third edition Dungeons & Dragons, the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer was better received by players.[2] Most reviews were generally positive,[3][4] while common misgivings concerned the lack of a full-color layout and the paper-back cover.
When the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer was published, it did not have an index—which was considered one of the few flaws of the book.[5][6] However, Jason Zavoda independently indexed it, and that index was published in Living Greyhawk Journal #12, in June 2002.[7]
By 2023, Living Greyhawk Gazetteer reached the rank of Gold seller on DriveThruRPG. And by 2025, it was a Platinum Bestseller.

"Problematically, the LGG includes no index at the end whatsoever. While the book is exceedingly well-organized, it can still be difficult to locate an obscure fact in a pinch. Pity the poor GM who has to look up what year Idee was absorbed into Ahlissa's South Province at the gaming table without benefit of a good index."
