Luna
|
Luna, known as Raenei, the Greater Moon, or the Mistress, is Oerth's silver satellite, the companion to the Lesser Moon, Celene. It is known as Mazlateotl[1] among the Olman and as Konola[2] among the Touv. From the perspective of Oerth, it cycles from its new to full phases once a month.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
From Oerth, Luna doesn't appear much larger than Celene, but the difference is noticeable. Because of this, it covers more (but not all) of the solar corona compared to Celene and solar eclipses are less spectacular when Luna is involved than when only Celene is.[3]
Luna appears, from the Oerth, as a featureless silver disk (varying between white, silver, and gray, with cloud cover creating a slight sense of changing patterns).[4] Two atmospheres obscure the planet's terrain—both Luna's and Oerth's[3]—so the haze makes it impossible to see any detail without traveling into space. Luna's atmosphere can refract light, though—when the conditions are right, during an eclipse the light from Celene will reflect in Luna's atmosphere, causing it to seem to be surrounded by a shining aquamarine halo.[3]
Unlike Celene, Luna isn't tidally locked with the Oerth; it rotates on its own axis and shows the "mother planet" both of its sides. However, both sides look the same from Oerth, so this doesn't make much difference. Its axis of rotation is at right angles to that of the Oerth, so from the perspective of Luna, Oerth rises in the north and set in the south (or vice versa, depending on the season). Oerth is large and bright enough to be visible from Luna both night and day. The sky is covered with clouds much of the time, and titanic thunderstorms are common in some regions, especially the north pole and the Polar Ring mountains.
Environment[edit | edit source]
Geography[edit | edit source]
Luna's surface is mostly dry land, with water covering only about 30% of it.[5] Prominent features (invisible from Oerth) include the Worldspine Mountains, which completely encircle the equator, an ocean in each hemisphere (the Deepsound Sea and the Saltwaste), and a circular desert known as the Anvil of God. A range of tall mountains called the Polar Ring surrounds the north pole, equidistant in every direction.
There is as wide a variety of geographical features on Luna as there are on Oerth—plains, deserts, forests, scrublands, mountains, etc.[5] The oceans have the same variety. from shallows to trenches and sinkholes.[5]
Atmosphere[edit | edit source]
The sky of Luna is not blue as Oerth's is; instead, it is lavender[6]
The atmosphere of Luna is short of oxygen.[3] Inert gases like nitrogen, helium, and others comprise the remainder. Those unaccustomed to this will find themselves constantly out of breath and tired, becoming fatigued twice as fast as normal.[3]
Fire based spell damage is reduced by half, rounded down, to a minimum of 1 hp.
Due to the clouds and humidity, visibility is low; one-half to one-tenth normal.[7]
Magnetosphere[edit | edit source]
The molten core of Luna (Ranei) is nikel-iron and it has a strong magnetic field surrounding the planet[5] making compass navigation impossible.[5] Their needles spin crazily[8] Like the rotational axis of the planet (causing day and night), the magnetic axis of the planet is aligned perpendicularly to the Oerth's ecliptic.[5]
Luna has auroras over both north and south poles almost continuously.[5]
Ecology[edit | edit source]
Flora[edit | edit source]
Luna also has a great deal of native flora, many of them dangerous or intelligent.[6] Some of these plants, like bronzewood, cedar, and oak, are familiar to travelers from Oerth, though they may have "notable variations in size or color; or they may have poisonous, allergy-producing or hallucinogenic plant pollens.[6] Even the "recognizable plants are different."[7] Others are completely alien.
Fauna[edit | edit source]
Luna has no sapient natives, though there is wildlife. There are a few groups of intelligent beings who have ended up here from other worlds. There is a settlement of about 200 called Triumph.[9] Iggwilv had a hidden stronghold here which was used by Tuerny during their brief alliance.[10] Both are inside the Polar Ring mountains.
Luna's native animals tend to be large and monstrous, alien and horrific by Oerth standards.
Creatures "with lightning natures" are common in Luna's upper atmosphere.[6] Creatures such as lightning quasi-elementals, numbuses, and other creatures native to the Quasielemental Plane of Lightning are common.
