Nerof Gasgol (also seen as Gasgol) is the Lord Mayor of the Free City of Greyhawk from 570 CY through 598 CY. He is also the Assistant Guildmaster of Greyhawk's Guild of Thieves.
Description
[edit | edit source]Name
[edit | edit source]"The actual name of the Lord Mayor of the City of Greyhawk... is Nerof Gasgol. but when his last name is pronounced the "o" sounds like an "a" (Gasgal), and that is what everyone thinks his name is when they write it out. He has long ago given up trying to correct the error, so it remains."—Player's Guide (1998)[1]
Personality
[edit | edit source]Gasgol is "habitually devious, moderately corrupt, and often ruthless, but well-liked and hard-working; has superb judgment but is not especially bright."[2]
Abilities
[edit | edit source]Nerof has grown and changed over the years, but he is always known for his guile and keen mind. He is also, however a very skilled Rogue. He first stat description is as a level 10 Rogue in 582 CY,[3] and quickly progressed to a level 12 Rogue by 591 CY. By 598 CY, he was given a multiclass, allowing him to have even more skills and deep expertise in many of them as a level 15 character, and was a Rogue 10/Expert 5.[4] For example, he was extraordinarily adept at deception, so in third edition his skill was described as "Bluff +35".
Str 10, Dex 17, Con 12, Int 11, Wis 18, Cha 16 in both 591[2] and 582 CY.[3]
The Legends of Greyhawk campaign returns to 576 CY and in fifth edition (DMG 2024), Gasgol is a CR10 "Spymaster",[5] which parallels his abilities in The City of Greyhawk boxed set (1989) were he was a level 10 Rogue (582 CY, above).

[edit | edit source]Relationships
[edit | edit source]Other than the secret inner circle of the Directing Oligarchy, Gasgol does have some notable relationships.
- Org Nenshen (LN male human Rogue [thief] 13)—Guildmaster of the Guild of Thieves
History
[edit | edit source]Nerof Gasgol was born in 540 CY in Greyhawk. At some point, he joined the Guild of Thieves, which was then under the leadership of Guildmaster Arentol.
In 570 CY, Gasgol became Lord Mayor of Greyhawk (it is assumed that he was a member of the Directing Oligarchy prior to that). One of the youngest mayors in Greyhawk's history, Gasgol and his allies on the Directing Oligarchy (who include Org Nenshen, his best friend, former partner, and guildmaster of the Thieves' Guild) brought great changes and dynamism to the city government, including reforming the city's currency.
An attempt to assassinate Gasgol was made in 589 CY during the Feast of Fools. Durin the parade and celebrations, a beggar used a poison needle to try to kill Gasgol. The attempt failed, and Carmen Halmaster was hit instead, but was immediately healed by a cleric travelling with the Director's bodyguards.[6]
Gasgol led Greyhawk for almost three decades, bringing the city to victory over its enemies, expanding its territory, and increasing its wealth. In fact, Gasgol was regarded as one of Greyhawk's greatest mayors, second only to Zagig Yragerne.[7][8][9][10][4][11]
In Living Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]Gasgol was assassinated in 598 CY by Turin Deathstalker, the former governor of Safeton during the Centennial Celebrations.[11]
