Preston is a small elven outpost in Geoff, on the northern border of Oytwood, at the confluence of Javan River and Realstream. It is an "arboreal" city[1] with many of its buildings "built high up in the trees."[2]
History
[edit | edit source]"Established before the formal founding of Geoff,"[1] during the earliest Migration-era meeting of human and elven cultures (c. prior to -310 CY).[3][4] With the blending of cultures, Preston thrives and grows into a large town or small city.[3] "Preston has long served as an outpost from which high elves in the Oytwood watch for invaders. Its first such use was against the Suel and Oeridian migrants, and more recently, against the giants", in the fight to liberate Geoff.[1][3]
Though heavily defended by its inhabitants, the giants capture Preston c.583 CY-584 CY,[3] forcing the surviving residents to flee to Hochoch,[1] or deeper into Oytwood[3] to the underground halls the elves constructed there. Preston suffers greatly and many of the treetop homes and other buildings of the elves are destroyed by the occupying giants, and even the trees which hold them are burned or chopped down.[2]
Elven forces expel giants from Preston in 591 CY. "The treetop ruins of Preston serve as a base for a small garrison of stoic elves tasked with holding it until more forces can be spared to rebuild it.[5] Even by 596 CY,[6] Preston has not yet recovered and is home to only about 50 elves.[1]
