Rik Rose is a game designer and editor associated with early role-playing game publications, including work on Dragon magazine and the British magazine Games Review.
Biography
[edit | edit source]Little biographical information is publicly available regarding Rik Rose. He is primarily known for his editorial and production work within the role-playing game hobby during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Career
[edit | edit source]In the mid-80s, Rose worked for TSR UK.[1] In addition to other works, Rose notably was a contributing author to AC11 The Book of Wondrous Inventions (1987).[2]
Greyhawk works
[edit | edit source]Rose is perhaps most well-known and celebrated in context to Greyhawk for his contribution to The City of Greyhawk (1989). He wrote Folks, Feuds, and Factions alongside Carl Sargent, with whom he was close friends. According to Rose, the duo wrote it in only a few days.
"As the TSR staffer it was expected that I would keep the project on the straight and narrow but it was Carl that really drove the project and got it done.... We were given The City of Greyhawk sourcebook to write as joint authors.... Doug Niles had already written most of the material describing the physical city and it was up to us to flesh it out. The book itself was written in four days between Christmas and New Year. Carl came down to the fairly remote, draughty and ancient cottage on the South Coast (of England) I happened to be living in at the time, and, after stocking up on coffee and Jameson whiskey, we got writing. ...we had put together a framework in advance, had worked out chapter headings and content and run through a few ideas but the book itself is pretty much stream of consciousness stuff. We would take it in turns—one would sit at my Mac Plus (with 1Mb floppy drive, state of the art of the time; Carl had an old Amstrad word processor) and type, while the other sat and dictated, switching when we'd either had enough or the inspiration flagged."

Dragon Magazine
[edit | edit source]Rik Rose is credited as part of the production staff for Dragon, one of the primary periodicals supporting Dungeons & Dragons during the 80s and 90s, published at the time by TSR.
Games Review
[edit | edit source]Rose later became the owner of Games Review Monthly beginning with issue #12 (September 1989). Under his leadership, the publication continued to cover tabletop gaming, including role-playing games, wargames, and related hobby content.
