Template:Cite sourcebook

From Great Library of Greyhawk
Jump to navigation Jump to search

A citation template for Dungeons & Dragons sourcebooks. To make it easier to type, it is also aliased to the code {{csb}}.

Place this after any sentence or section which references a D&D sourcebook as its source. Place the citation tag after any punctuation mark rather than before it.

Full entries for sources used should still be placed in a"Bibliography" or "Further Reading" section.

The template takes the following parameters:

  • Book name: The first parameter is the name of the sourcebook. A number of popular abbreviations and aliases are recognized, including many series codes (e.g. T1-4, L3), Encyclopedia Greyhawkania abbreviations (LGG, TAB) and common aliases (e.g. "Folio", "Box Set"). This parameter is required.
  • Page number: The second parameter is a number or range of numbers.
  • Sub-book: The third parameter is which book of a box set or chapter, subsection, or section title. Normally unnecessary.
  • inline: use this to place the citation inline as a brief parenthetical in the body text sentence, rather than an footnote at the bottom of the page. Place |inline=yes within the {{csb}}
  • Prefix: A module code. NOTE: This is almost never used, as the template already automatically adds the prefix for known Greyhawk books in their entries,
  • Note: Optional. Used to add a text quote, author's name, or other note after the text.

Title aliases

[edit source]

Some sourcebooks have multiple ways their names can be written. The full title can always be used, but there are aliases for some, which can shorten the space they occupy and shorten typing them. Initials or abbreviations of the title are the most common common aliases. Sometimes, multiple aliases are available for a single source.

{{csb|Player's Handbook (1e)|25|note=First note}}
{{csb|PHB1e|25|note=Second note.}}
{{csb|PH1e|25|note=Second note.}}

Which produce three separate catiations for the title, which do not stack, even if the rest is the same—[1][2][3]

Be aware there are sometimes multiple editions of sourcebooks with the same title, each with its own entry. E.g., the Manual of the Planes in first, third, and fourth editions.

{{csb|Manual of the Planes (1e)|25}}
{{Csb|MotP3e|25}}
{{csb|MotP4e|25}}

Which produce—[1][2][3]
