Wyvernen is a hamlet on the Wild Coast. It is comprised of "farmers, bandits, raiders, peat-diggers (...which is sold to Safeton as fuel),[1][2] and a family of gnome cutthroats chased out of Safeton."[1]
History
[edit | edit source]After the Greyhawk Wars, Wyvernen is within the Domain of Greyhawk, though the priest-dictator, Hendred Blerrid, insists the settlement is independent.[1][3]
Orcish raiding parties begin attacking Wyvernen in 585 CY, but are driven off by Hendred's magic. This spurs on his extreme prejudice toward orcs. He now regularly urges his militia to prepare for battle and gives impassioned theatrical speeches, colored with the imagery of orcish blood washing their walls.[3]
Geography
[edit | edit source]Wyvernen lies on the southern border of the holdings of Safeton due southwest of Safeton, along Wyvern's Run.
There are sunken peat bogs due north of the village, at the bottom of a four-mile-long gorge which drops nearly 600ft to the peat beds.[3]
After the Greyhawk Wars, it is the southernmost settlement within the Domain of Greyhawk and the northern border of the Orcish Empire of the Pomarj.
People
[edit | edit source]The citizens of Wyvernen are split into four categories: farmers, bandits, peat-diggers, and the family of evil-aligned, cutthroat gnomes, who fled here from Safeton.[3]
Population
[edit | edit source]In 585 CY, Wyvernen held a modest population of 165.[3] By 591 CY, this number had grown slightly to 180.[1]
Religion
[edit | edit source]Their leader, Hendred, is a devout priest of Hextor. It is unclear to what extent Hextor's religious dogmas are followed by, or enforced upon, the other denizens of Wyvernen.[3]
Government
[edit | edit source]Hendred rules the people of Wyvernen with an iron fist, to such an extent that he asserts sovereignty and separation from Greyhawk.[3]
Economy
[edit | edit source]Wyvernen doesn't have much in the way of trade, save for the peat they farm and sell to Safeton as fuel.[3][2]
Militia
[edit | edit source]The defenses of Wyvernen comprise a stone-and-wood wall which encircle the hamlet, a makeshift lot of bandits, and their leader Hendred, who rides a trained wyvern into battle.[3]
Despite sitting unambiguously within the Domain of Greyhawk and therefore qualifying for shared defenses, Hendred's arrogance has led him to refuse their help. He forbids the militias of Greyhawk from entering, approaching, or aiding the village, even in times of crisis.[3]
