Bilebrine is a settlement completely contained in a series of caves along the coast of the North Province (Aerdiaak),[1] just north of Atirr,[2] ruled by a minor Torquann prince. It is known for the brine from which it gets its name, which is comprised of sea water that leeches copper minerals out of the cave walls, giving it a cloudy, bile-colored appearance.
History
[edit | edit source]The town used to be above ground, and the ruins of the old town still stand on the surface. The people grew weary of the constant raids by Thillonrian tribes from the north, and so moved the entire town down below the surface as soon as the caves were fully mapped out and declared safe.[1]
A minor Torquann prince faked a serious illness which he proceeded to "cure" by soaking in the bile-colored water in the deep caves. The result is that it made the town a destination for Great Kingdom nobles hoping to soak in the water and take advantage of their alleged healing properties.[1]
People
[edit | edit source]The people of Bilebrine tend to shun the outside world, even paying visitors, and keep to themselves, ignoring the greater political machinations going on around them. This has led to a small population suffering from effects of consanguinity, and a peculiar look among the citizenry, with many being so fair skinned it borders on albinism.[1]
Because they are so self-sufficient, folk of Bilebrine subsist on a diet of shellfish, kelp, cave fish, and lizards [1].
Government
[edit | edit source]The minor Torquann prince who is in charge of the town pays his taxes and tithes to Grenell, though he does not provide any soldiers.
Economy
[edit | edit source]Capitalizing on the alleged healing nature of the water, the town operates health spas which provide "hydrotherapy, flagellation with kelp fronds, and similar dubious treatments."[1] These treatments provided at the underground springs are popular with nobles suffering from overindulgence in places as far as Eastfair and Edge Field, though the Greyhawk Wars saw a sharp downturn in the number of visitors.[1]
Trade
[edit | edit source]There is little to no trade into or out of Bilebrine. Because the locals the locals have become creative in manufacturing needed goods from local material like kelp and stone (as in basketweaving and spear-crafting), many general goods aren't available in Bilebrine.
