Five Oaks (also seen as Five Oak)[1] is a village in the Domain of Greyhawk, situated on the eastern fringe of the Gnarley Forest. It is notably the largest community in this specific region of the woodland.[2]
History
[edit | edit source]Geography
[edit | edit source]Five Oaks is located within the southeastern edge of the vast Gnarley Forest at the fringe of the Domain of Greyhawk. A brook runs through the village, spanned by a small stone bridge that connects the surrounding area to the village square. Unlike many settlements in dangerous regions, Five Oaks does not possess a defensive wall; instead, the community relies on the size of its populace for defense against threats.[2]
The area of Five Oaks, from One Ford to Two Ford are prone to periodic flooding from the Ery and Neen Rivers when storms come up from the Mistmarsh or Cairn Hills area.[3]
Cityscape
[edit | edit source]The settlement occupies a cleared area of land roughly equivalent in size to Lockswell Manor. The village layout centers on a small meadow serving as the town square. Key municipal and commercial structures surround this square, including the mayor's residence, the local sawmill, and the trading post.[2]
The majority of residences are modest cabins consisting of two or three rooms. Local artisans typically maintain their workshops within their homes, adding an additional room or two for commercial purposes.[2]
People
[edit | edit source]In 582 CY and 585 CY, the population of Five Oaks is only 100 woodsmen.[4]
Notable individuals
[edit | edit source]- Malco Frump—proprietor of the trading post in Five Oaks; member of the Union of Merchants and Traders of the Free City[4]; maintains a stock of exotic goods to cater to elven traders.[5].
Government
[edit | edit source]Military
[edit | edit source]There are 20 Greyhawk Militia soldiers stationed at Five Oaks, who also cover law enforcement.[6]
Economy
[edit | edit source]The village is home to a variety of industrious craftspeople, including a carpenter, blacksmith, tanner, leatherworker, and woodcarver. An inn and a livery also serve the populace.[7]
Resources
[edit | edit source]The primary industry in Five Oaks is lumber. The local sawmill utilizes a waterwheel to power a blade nearly 12 feet in diameter. Planks and boards are processed here for a fee, though barter is the preferred method of payment, and local prices are generally considered reasonable.[5]
Trade
[edit | edit source]Lumber coming from the Gnarley, produced in the sawmill, is shipped through Five Oaks and is transported to shipwrights in One Ford who craft the small river-boats (punts) used by the Greyhawk Militia who patrol the Selintan River—the Water Rats.[8]
The village trading post serves a dual purpose. While it provides daily necessities such as flour, bacon, and tools to the local population, it functions primarily as a point of exchange for elven traders emerging from the deeper woods. Consequently, the post stocks unusual items rarely found in the region, including bright feathers from southern jungles, eastern turquoise and platinum, sea shells, salt, ivory, and jade carvings.[5]
