Furyondy, properly known as the Kingdom of Furyondy, is a feudal kingdom of the Flanaess, and a successor state of Ferrond.

History[edit]

Originally part of the Viceroyalty of Ferrond known as Furyon, Furyondy claimed independence from the Great Kingdom of Aerdy in 254 CY. The nation's first king, Thrommel I, was crowned that same year. In 288, the Furyondyian capitol was moved from Dyvers to Chendl. Dyvers would eventually secede from Furyondy in 526 CY.

Geography[edit]

Modern Furyondy is bordered by the Nyr Dyv to the east; by the Veng River, Whyestil Lake, and the Vesve Forest to the north; and by the Velverdyva River to the south and west.

People[edit]

The people of Furyondy have a couple of festivals that are unique to their nation. The Growfest Eel Run is a festival held in Furyondy every year, mainly in the town of Caronis. The festival marks the migration of a large number of Lake Quag elvers (young eels), which swim down the Velverdyva River to the Nyr Dyv.

The Goose Fair is an annual market fair that is held in the city of Willip. It takes its name from a local breed of geese and features many diverse entertainments, with traders arriving from many lands. The festival has also given its name to Willip's market district, its called "Goose Yards."

Population[edit]

As of 591 CY, the population of Furyondy totaled 1,481,800 persons, the vast majority being humans of chiefly Oeridian stock. Elves, halflings, dwarves, and gnomes make up less than 20% of the total population.

Religion[edit]

The most popular deities among Furyondians are Heironeous, Rao, Saint Cuthbert, Mayaheine, Zilchus, Trithereon, Fharlanghn, and Beory.

Languages[edit]

The most widely-spoken languages in Furyondy include Common, Velondi, Elvish, and Halfling.

Government[edit]

The Kingdom of Furyondy is a hereditary feudal monarchy. The power of the kingship is limited by the Noble Council. Since 288 CY, the nation's capitol has been Chendl.

Administrative Divisions[edit]

Furyondy is made up of eight provinces ruled by hereditary nobility, one of which is governed directly by the monarch (Fairwain Province). The other seven noble families are collectively known as the "Seven Families." These noble fiefdoms are: the Duchy of the Reach, the County of Crystalreach, the Gold County, the Viscounty of the March, the Barony of Kalinstren, the Barony of Littleberg, and the Barony of Willip.

Executive Branch[edit]

Furyondy's chief of state is King Belvor IV, who has ruled since 537 CY. His only son and heir, Prince Thrommel, was lost and declared dead in 592 CY. Since then he has produced no other heirs.

Legislative Branch[edit]

The king's lesser nobles, the Seven Families, are represented by the Noble Council, which keeps the king's power in check. All important royal decrees must be garner the support of the Noble council before being executed.

Below the Noble Council is the Knightly Conclave, a parliamentary group of minor nobles which considers any issue desired, then offers its opinions to the king.

Judicial Branch[edit]

Alleged crimes were divided into criminal and civil offenses. Civil offenses were usually settled by the ancient practice of duelling usually with paid champions standing in for defendant and accuser. Heironeous was relied on to guide the hand of the righteous so this was an acceptable way of settling matters. However, given the loss of fighting men in the Greyhawk Wars, inflicting serious injury in such duels was by 585 CY a criminal offense and more civil cases were being decided by magistrates. Magistrates were usually low level priests of a lawful neutral or lawful good deity such as Saint Cuthbert. Rao or Zilchus.[1]

Criminal offenses were divided into:

  • Grievous Crimes (such as murder, sedition, and treason);
  • Injurious Crimes (such as serious assault, tomb robbing, major destruction of property, rioting, magical misconduct and the like), and
  • Crimes of Disrepute (minor infringements such as minor assault, bootlegging, coin clipping, minor fraud, and bribery of minor officials).

Minor offenses were regarded as more serious if they resulted in impairment of rebuilding and defense work. Trials for criminal offenses were presided over by magistrates as for civil matters, save for Grievous Crimes which were investigated by a three-member panel of judges, being higher ranking priests of suitable deities. Magical interrogations were standard practice in cases of alleged Grievous Crimes, but not in lesser cases. Sentences handed down to those found guilty varied somewhat from province to province, but Grievous Crimes usually merited death or banishment usually accompanied by the severance of a limb or the placing of a curse or geas on the criminal. With other crimes, some nobles levied heavy fines which added to the noble coffers. Some opted for forced conscription into levies, but this was frowned upon as little more than slavery which was frowned upon by Furyondians. Others preferred imprisonment or banishment.[2]

Heraldry[edit]

Furyondy's coat of arms is blazoned thus: Party per bend gules and azure, dexter three crowns in bend or, sinister a decrescent argent.

Economy[edit]

Resources[edit]

Furyondy is noted for its foodstuffs, cloth, gold, wines, fish, and shipbuilding supplies.[3][4]

Furyondy’s natural resources include cloth, food, wines, fish, and a little gold from the mines of Carnalion. Furyondy exports its surpluses of grain, livestock and cloth. The trade route via the Highfolk to Perrenland is vital to both nations. This route supplies copper, precious metals and luxury goods such as fine cheese. There is also considerable trade with Veluna across the Velverdyva River. Furyondy trades from Willip and other southern cities to Dyvers, the Free City of Greyhawk and across the Nyr Dyv to Urnst, and with Verbobonc and on to the Kron Hills. From these lands Furyondy acquires wood (from the Vesve), metals, weaponry, mercenaries, worked goods, tools and the like.[5]

Currency[edit]

The Furyondy standard coinage consists of the platinum paladin (pp), gold wheatsheaf (gp), electrum knight (ep), silver sheridan (sp), and copper common (cp).[6][7]

Transportation[edit]

Furyondy's nationwide road system was at one time one of the best in the Flanaess. Much of it lies in shambles, however, due to the nation's coffers being drained by the Greyhawk Wars of 582-584 and the Great Northern Crusade of 586-588.

Much waterborne traffic takes place along Furyondy's rivers and across the Nyr Dyv. Whyestill Lake and the Veng are rarely used, however, due to the ever-present threat from the Empire of Iuz to the north.

Military[edit]

Furyondy has one of the most impressive armies in the Flanaess. Augmented by adventurers and mercenary bands, the full might of Furyondy's national infantry and cavalry forces stands at roughly twenty thousand soldiers, with roughly the same amount raised by local lords.

The Furyondian Royal Navy patrols the Nyr Dyv, protecting the coasts from dangerous monsters and pirates. The navy is based in Willip at the largest dockyard in the Flanaess, the Willip Arsenal.

Furyondy in the Living Greyhawk campaign[edit]

In the Living Greyhawk campaign, Furyondy corresponds to the state of Michigan.
