Greenkeep is a castle in the North Province of the Great Kingdom, on the banks of the Teesar Torrent. It is one of the Highlander Castles which were built to act as a line of defense along northern end of the river, between Bellport and Knurl.[1]. The keep is destroyed in 584 CY and the ruins gain their name from a haunting green glow permeating the area during periods of dark and cold.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]In Sunsebb of 584 CY, right at the end of the Greyhawk Wars, the castle is destroyed when a dark cloud appears above it, pouring acid rain and shooting down lightning. The keep is completely ruined, with the very walls and towers shattered, and all but a handful of the garrison is slain, with only a few making it west to safety.[1]
People
[edit | edit source]The garrison of the keep, prior to its destruction, is commanded by Raspalan, a minor Garasteth prince. Before being the garrison commander, Raspalan flees his home near Rinloru after he committed a number of murders, and then continues fleeing from everywhere else he goes, for the same reason.[1]
Rumors and legends
[edit | edit source]The few survivors claim that Raspalan is conducting foul necromantic experiments in the dungeons of the keep at the time it was destroyed. It is speculated that the keep is destroyed by one of the enemies that Raspalan made while constantly fleeing places to escape accusations of murder, but it is not known which of the many enemies he made would be capable of destroying the keep.[1] Those who visit the ruins claim they appear to grown and shrink, particularly on cold nights when the green glow can be seen. There are also reports of ghostly screams, though the source has never been found.[1]
