Fleet Admiral Hugarnd is a naval officer in the Kingdom of Nyrond.
Description
[edit | edit source]Appearance
[edit | edit source]Hugarnd is tall and statuesque, at 6' 1". He is very strong, but only has a medium build. Hugarnd's eyes are grey and he keeps his red-brown hair cut short.[1] Hugarnd was 35 in 585 CY.
Personality and alignment
[edit | edit source]Though Hugarnd was impatient when a young man of 35 (in Spring 585 CY)[1], he is piercingly intelligent, charismatic, honorable, steely and a brilliant leader.[2] He is Lawful Good with Neutral Good tendencies.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]After the Greyhawk Wars Hugarnd was considered possibly the best of King Archbold III's senior military officers. He was still loyal to the king, but worried by talk of rebellious complaints. The kingdom's inability to properly pay his navy despite repeated requests frustrated him. Against his instincts he ignored the recent naval raid on Prymp when disguised Nyrondel vessels made off with goods, a galley, and even captives. He was torn between spending time with the king seeking payment and being present with his naval units to keep discipline.[2] He was a popular and commanding figure at the time, even more so than General Younard. Hugarnd was responsible for jointly administering the city of Mithat with Younard after Archbold revoked the local noble's rulership, [3] and he was based there in 585 CY[4]. Archbold, Younard, and Hugarnd were said to be considering a strike against Onyxgate to weaken Duke Szeffrin.[5]
The poor discipline of the navy in Wragby caused Viscount Jarrold to threaten Hugarnd with denying access to the naval dockyards unless sailors were disciplined. This lead to the dockyards being walled off, sailors not allowed in the main town, and raised tensions.[6]
Hugarnd continued as fleet admiral under King Lynwerd.[7]
Abilities
[edit | edit source]Str 17, Con 16, Int 17, Cha 17[1]
Possessions
[edit | edit source]Hugarnd is known to carry various magic items, such as: chain mail +5, a cloak of protection +2, a cutlass +3 (able to dispel magic), and rings of regeneration and water walking.[1]
Relationships
[edit | edit source]Hugarnd was aware King Archibold and General Basmajenn were poor commanders and considered moving against Archibold.[1] He focused on maintaining discipline, which was poor outside Mithat, and had to deal with complaints from Onnwalese captains about his naval captain's activities on the south coast.[1]
In Living Greyhawk
[edit | edit source]Hugarnd was indicated as having the first name of Ramol in the Nyrond Gazetteer published by the Nyrond region Triad, and made available on the Nyrond Triad web site.
Following Sewarndt's coup at the end of 594 CY, Mithat was taken by Hextorian and Scarlet Brotherhood forces supporting Sewarndt, blockading Nyrond navy ships in harbor. In 595 CY adventurers were sent by Lynwerd to investigate tales Duke Younard had gone mad, and reconnoitre the city. As Lynwerd's forces assaulted Mithat and the city rose against the occupiers, naval forces under Hugarnd joined the assault. He was revealed to have been at sea when the coup occurred, leading a small contingent of ships hunting pirates, and had remained at large since.[8]
Following the liberation of Mithat, Younard was able to secure most of Nyrond's coast east of Mithat while Duchess Verin Talnith did the same for most of the coast west of Wragby. Younard and Hugarnd were planning breaking the blockade at Oldred when Lynwerd came to them to organize the combined forces to coordinate an attack on Rel Mord. Hugarnd was to lead forces to attack Oldred from the sea, recapturing it or at least tying down forces of Duke Korenflass.[9]
