Sterich, properly known as the March of Sterich, is a political state of the Flanaess.
History
[edit | edit source]Sterich was founded in -230 CY as a Keolandish border province (a "march") and gained its impudence at some point during the downward spiral of the Keoish Empire.
After the earl (Querchard) refuses to swear fealty to the crown of Keoland, giants invade Sterich in 584 CY,[1] and Keoland does not send military help. King Kimbertos Skotti, a close friend of Querchard promotes the earl to be a marquis. Istivin is retaken in 586 CY, and by 587, the heartlands are recovered.[2]
Geography
[edit | edit source]Sterich is in the southwestern, portion of the Flanaess. It lies in a broad basin formed by the Stark Mounds to the north and northwest, by the Crystalmist Mountains to the west, and by the Jotens to the south. It is separated from the Kingdom of Keoland by the Javan River.
People
[edit | edit source]The native folk of Sterich show strong Flan characteristics, along with Suel and Oeridian influences.
Government
[edit | edit source]The national capital is Istivin.
In 576 CY, Sterich's national leader is Marquise Quercha Emondav (female human).[3] In earlier editions, the ruler in 576 CY goes unnamed and is only referred to as the Earl of Sterich,[4] or is Querchard[5] (though the earl is later promoted to marquis).
Sterich is ruled in 591 CY by Marchioness Resbin Dren Emondav (LN female human Sor13)[6] who takes over governance of the march in 590 CY when her husband, the marquis, goes missing.[7] It is later found (595 CY) that an Abyssal entity known as the Malgoth had brought a pall over Istivin, and possesses the marquis. He is driven completely insane by the Malgoth, and dies when the entity is forcibly removed from him.[8]
Heraldry
[edit | edit source]Sterich's coat of arms is blazoned thus: Per fess dancetty gules and sable a lion rampant counterchanged..
Economy
[edit | edit source]Various mines are the chief source of national commerce and trade. They produce silver, gold, and gems. Alloyed electrum is also used in trade.[9]
Military
[edit | edit source]Sterich famously has elite light cavalry units and light infantry units. The army of Sterich also employs heavy dwarvish infantry, from mountainous enclaves in the west. These are sometimes levied to Keoland. Halbariers and medium cavalry stay at home to keep watch on the western regions at the edge of the Crystalmists.[5]
