A New Wiki Feature!

Welcome, Greyhawkers! Greyhawk Online now has a new wiki feature functionality added to the Great Library of Greyhawk! There's many ways to use the tools that Mediawiki allows, and they're usually easy to implement.  Which makes the Great Library of Greyhawk better and easier to use! So, to make the wiki as useful as possible, the cross-referencing table at the end of articles now has links!  Users no longer must copy+paste to see if a page for a source even exists! Useful and Convenient The most important fact about wikis is they are universally meant to be easy to use for the end-user.  If they're not, they're not serving their purpose. The biggest complaint we hear about indexes, codexes, databases, spreadsheets, etc. is they are often difficult to use.  Especially as they typically use abbreviations which used to be common, but are now usually not used as often.   Time was, just saying "S1" or "U1" was enough.  Nowadays, though, gamers and fans would likely recognize the names of Tomb of Horrors  and Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh.  This is particularly true since Sinister Secret has been made available to fifth edition fans in a newer book for new players to have the same incredible experience as so many people did way back when.  But, the codes don't necessarily automatically convey the title anymore. So, when the difference between things like "TAB" and "tAB" are unfamiliar (there's not one!) a user wouldn't know what they mean.  Then there's also "TSB", "TSC", "FTA", and "FAT".  It can all get very confusing.  There are even others which are more obscure, or people just might not know off the top of ... read more!

Hey there, Greyhawkers! Curious about Greyhawk books?! We're boosting the signal, so to speak, for a rather good article written by Ollie Delano  on dungeonsanddragonsfan.com about the various books and novels set in the World of Greyhawk! The Greyhawk Novels: A Reader’s Guide The guide to Greyhawk novels is very well-written, and explores the original novels by Gary Gygax, as well as the "Classics" series, the Mika Oba novels, and the murder mystery Night Watch by Robin Wayne Bailey.  Even the Quag Keep and Return to Quag Keep are covered!  Take a look and read about all the novels and books you may not have read, or those you haven't heard of! The Greyhawk Novels: A Reader’s Guide All the novels are great, all for various reasons.  Delano does a great job reviewing the novels while remaining positive about them each, and not falling into debating anything like what might be wrong with any of them or being derogatory or negative about any of them. The novels each reflect Greyhawk in a different way.  Most especially the Greyhawk Classics series (by various authors).  The characters are all beloved, and everyone has favorites!  "Justicar" is often a favorite of readers discovering the books for the first time. A very minor detail:  the author says Night Watch takes place "several hundred years after the previous Greyhawk novels."  However, the only date or timeline reference we have in the novel indicate that it is much earlier than that. A trailer for Season 4 released by Netflix on Tuesday, April 12th teased the next main monster, this time named after Vecna, The Whispered One, dark god of secrets and one of Dungeons & Dragons most enduring villains! What could this new foe borne from the Upside Down have in store for The Party from Hawkins? If this Vecna retains the personality or power of his namesake, they’re in for a spine-chilling war of minds that crosses the planes of reality. There are numerous Dungeons & Dragons campaign settings, though the cast of Stranger Things would only know its first published setting, Greyhawk. Something Moore ... Infrequently Asked Questions By Roger E. Moore [Editor's Introduction:  Roger E. Moore was instrumental in creating the '98 line of World of Greyhawk books and wrote The Adventure Begins and Return of the Eight.  He was also the Editor for the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and D&D Gazetteer.  Beloved by fans, he's known for contributing to the TSR AOL boards and for being one of the TSR creators who talked with fans extensively.  There were numerous things he posted on the AOL boards which are still cherished by fans, such as: Gates in the World of Greyhawk (Part 1), Half-Dragons, and Chronomancy and the Multiverse.  He also contributed to the Oerth Journal from '96 to '98.  He wrote prolifically for Dragon  Magazine in the 80s and 90s, and was the Editor-in-Chief of Dragon and Dungeon magazines. Art by Matt Forsyth ​As the Wolf Nomads or Wegwiur as they call themselves settled down into their new homeland in the northern Flanaess, the elite outriders of the Relentless Horde found themselves without purpose. Under the guidance of the late Kha-Khan, they scouted ahead for plunder and grazing lands. Still, they now found themselves simply wandering their new homeland without purpose. They found occasional purpose in killing the rare monster or leading raids against their former allies, the Tiger Nomads, or into Perrenland. Still, those callings were few, so their numbers dwindled. They might have even faded into legends had it not been for the rise of Iuz, and the threat of a new foe to fight. With the coming of Iuz, these once outriders evolved into the Wolf Sentinels, ranging the lands between their's and that of the forces of the Great Old One. They took prominent roles in the battles that soon followed Iuz's return and leaders in the continuous skirmishes and raids along their borders with Iuz's empire. Within the rigid structure of Wolf Nomad society, Wolf Sentinels answer only to their tribal tarkhan. When donning the ceremonial red wolves head of their station, they sever all ties to their families and clans to remain uninfluenced by clan rivalries. Wolf Sentinels take no wives and have no children so long as they remain a Wolf Sentinel. They may retire from their station if they wish and live a family life, but this usually only happens if the Sentinel has lingering injuries that keep them from performing the tasks of a Wolf Sentinel. Oerth Journal #35 is Released! Volume III, no. 08 The next issue of the Oerth Journal has arrived! This time it's a Winter/Spring issue. During this very difficult time, things have slowed down a lot, and many things are simply not as active during the pandemic. There's all kinds of content from incredible authors and artists! Another issue of the Oerth Journal has arrived! There have been more issues of the Oerth Journal in the past two years than there were in more than the ten years preceding. When GHO began providing the OJ again, one of the biggest things we worried about was how overwhelming a production schedule can become. And, even though we purposely avoided doing a monthly or bimonthly schedule and set it as quarterly, that's still a lot to produce a magazine every 90 days! We're very proud to have so many contributors to the OJ that we can accomplish the goal of a quarterly magazine! It's only through the efforts of all of the artists, authors, and editors that we can make such a great magazine! Review: Oerth Journal 34

Review: Oerth Journal 34 The Oerth Journal #34 has arrived! Oerth Journal has hit the newsstands once again, and once again, I find an example of my humble work, A Fistful of Baubles, within its covers. Is there a theme to this issue? Not that I am aware. Past issues had a theme, but this one is a free-for-all, and it shows. There are bios, ecologies, stories, and histories. It's a mixed bag. As much as themes are thrilling, so too is the unexpected. What's my submission about? In a word: Skrellingshald. What's that, you ask? It's one of the mysterious places, or adventure hooks in James M. Ward's "Geography of Oerth" portion of Greyhawk Adventures. More specifically, my submission is a story about Hradji Beartooth's search of that mythical city in the Griff Mountains, and the treasures that may be secreted there. By the way, for those who are not in the know, Skrellingshald is the Rhizian's name for Tostenhca. You don't know what Tostenhca is? It's an ancient Flan city. Indeed, it was one of the greatest cities built by the Flan, or humans, for that matter. Pick up a copy of the module Return to White Plume Mountain to learn more. So why Beartooth's search for Skrellingshald? Because it's a quest, a dangerous one; maybe even a harrowing one. Were it not so, I'm sure someone would have discovered it long ago. Because it's a footnote in Greyhawk's history. Because it's a tale of doom brought on by Keraptis and the Ur-Flan. Oerth Journal #34 is Released! Get Oerth Journal #34 NOW! The next issue of the Oerth Journal is here! Another season has come and gone, already. Summer's over and we're already into the back half of Autumn. Which means ... Another issue of the Oerth Journal has arrived! Hi--ho, good neighbor! Your friendly neighborhood Editor-in-chief, here! So, this issue (#34) is the seventh issue in the last two years. I mention this not only because it's awesome and incredible, but also because it's a little surprising and nerve-wracking. Never before has the Oerth Journal come out so many times so often. We'd like to thank so many of our contributors for all the articles and art they submit. Many are fan favorites, like Gary Holian and Denis "Maldin" Tetreault, but just as our goal is to promote fan-created work concentrating on Greyhawk, there's all kinds of ecologies, lore, fiction, various D&D editions, and just general GH content by a dozen different contributors. Look Who's Looking! So, surprisingly, it hadn't occurred to us that the Oerth Journal would be noticed by RPGgeek.com, sort of. New Player Summary: Furyondy In my endless quest to make Greyhawk accessible to new Fifth Edition players thought I'd try my hand at a gazetteer style entry.  I think my ideal introductory 5e Greyhawk product would be a new guide of similar style and length 1983 Box Set that would give about the same level of detail, but tailor the information more towards what new players would find most useful in a contemporary game.  Heavier on adventure hooks and clear, usable concepts for playing in the setting and lighter on say, army composition, or stat blocks for gods.  So, I wrote this entry on Furyondy in 576.  Anything you think it needs added or could do without? Furyondy Greed and cruelty rise across the Flanaess, yet in the kingdom of Furyondy, the forces of good stand strong. Brave knights defend honest folk for a worthy king. Their vigilance is vital. From just across the northern border, fiendish forces attack. Adventurers seeking a righteous battle against true darkness will find it here. Furyondy is a feudal kingdom of 350,000 led by a just and fearless Paladin. King Belvor IV rules from Chendl, a riverside city of 15,000. Powerful families sworn to his service govern their ancestral lands in his name. For years the coastal towns have been burned and looted by the forces of evil. You and your fellow adventurers have been recruited to root out and destroy the source of these raids. But beware, hundreds of good men and women have been taken bythe slavers and have never been seen or heard from again! [A1] For those of you who are of a certain age, or those who have read my thoughts on A0 Danger at Darkshelf Quarry, and Lowdown in Highport, you know the events leading up to this module. For those who haven’t, this is how the adventure was introduced: For several years, organized bands of pirates and slavers have made a living by raiding the coastal towns on the Sea of Gearnat. Ranging from Onnwal to the Wild Coast, they have descended quickly and ruthlessly on the small towns and villages, and carried off innocent citizens into the night. Although these marauders were not approved of by the lords and rulers of the lands they raided, they were allowed to continue their depredations. Feuding amongst the lords and lack of funds prevented all but an occasional naval battle with the villains and the slow fortification of towns. Bribery was often a more effective method of protecting one’s lands from the incursions of these avaricious seawolves.  Recently, however, the slavers’ attacks have become more frequent and vicious.
