One of the great things about the World of Greyhawk is the number of adventures one can have there, and never run out of room to travel in!

The Oliver Brothers

One fan, in particular – or rather, a group of fans – has decided to share their adventures with us all! And, not in the form of a blog, or a livestream … but, literally in the form of the adventures they write. The Oliver Brothers!

The Oliver Brothers have written a 15-adventure series that courses it’s way along the rivers of the Flanaess, beginning all the way in the North, and travelling downstream to the Free City of Greyhawk itself! There are monsters galore, intrigues, plots afoot, and dangers at every turn!

Concept of the Great River Adventure

The premise is straightforward – it’s a hex-crawl down various rivers of the Flanaess, making it sort of a “Grand Tour of the Realms” kind of thing.
The campaign arc is compatible with 1st edition, but there’s really only the monsters/opponents which are stat-dependent, and it can easily be played in any edition. And it’s well-worth the playing, too, because it’s a very neat setup and has interesting story hooks along the entire route.

The adventures are organized by the regions in which they happen.

The Adventure has been reviewed rather favorably on the Greyhawkery blog by Mike Bridges, and quotes the Oliver Brothers, saying:

“The hardest (and most frustrating) part of any journey is the planning. And so it is with the new party of adventurers planning to journey down the Fler and Velverdyva Rivers to the Gem of the Flanaess – Greyhawk.

How the Story Begins!

Chapter 1 of The Great Flanaess River Adventure begins in Blackmoor in the Village of Arneson located at the headwaters of the Fler River. The party needs provisions, the means for securing future provisions, and canoes. A number of opportunities arise for the party to secure all they need before departing. From hunting the winter wolf, to entering the Burneal Forest to obtain wood for dugout canoes, to watching the antics of the snow monkeys–the adventure and campaign of a lifetime begins.”

There’s adventures set in the river itself, as the party drifts by boat along the waterways, some take place ashore, with the PCs having to investigate strange goings on in the areas they visit.

The Oliver Brothers themselves describe it:

This campaign is the ultimate hex crawl, taking the newly formed adventuring party by canoe from the northern reaches of Blackmoor to the “Gem of the Flanaess” – Greyhawk – via the Velverdyva River, a journey consisting of 94 hexes and 2,820 miles! The journey of a lifetime awaits your new characters in this river campaign. Organized in 15 chapters, consisting of over 500 pages, and a dozen major adventures, the ultimate goal of this campaign is very simple: Greyhawk or bust!
