Wormy in Greyhawk – This is how you create a portal

2020-02-18T23:45:23-05:00February 18th, 2020|

Wormy in Greyhawk - This is how you create a portal Gremorley the wizard has been a recurring NPC in my Greyhawk campaign for years. While most of the Wormyverse doesn't translate to Greyhawk (except for the incredible Trampier art which I use as much as possible) Gremorley is one of those arrogant, high-handed, self-serving NPCs that fit perfectly and had a thousand uses. He was a frequent patron of my players but immediately gained a reputation as untrustworthy, devious and completely unconcerned about the player characters well-being. When you worked for him you knew that you weren't being given all the information and that some kind of illeagal and dangerous activity would be involved, and if anything went wrong he would certainly disavow any knowledge and never, never, never come to your aid. At one time the players realized that Gremorley had sent a group of NPC adventurers to releave them of an interesting Suel artifact they'd aquired and a reprisal raid upon the wizard's manor on the outskirts of Greyhawk's Old City resulted in a haul of exotic goods that turned out to be too hot for the player characters to handle. They found themselves wanted criminals for the crimes and thefts of Gremorley and a long and deeply held grudge-war began. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

Historical – Battle of a Fortnite’s Length -110cy

2020-02-18T11:33:57-05:00February 18th, 2020|

Historical - Battle of a Fortnite's Length -110cy The great cavalry squadrons of the Nyrondese were decimated by the end of the fighting with the Aerdy. King Galagas of Nyrond was eventually forced to make a final stand with the dehorsed remnant of his heavily armored royal guard while they were subjected to a deadly hail of arrows from the elven archers allied to Iknian the Aerdy king. It was the alliance with the elves more than anything else that brought down the might of Nyrond. Loathe though they were to do so the contingents of elven archers first slew the Nyrondese horses allowing the much more lightly armored Flan allies of the Aerdy to flit among the gorey battlefields killing trapped and wounded cavalry while heavily armored Aerdy infantry battlied dismounted Nyrondese units before the could reorganise from their shattered squadrons.  The last to fall were the royal guard and King Galagas himself. Hemmed in by heavy infantry the were goaded by elven archers till they gave up their defensive position amid the crumbling ruins of an ancient Suel outpost and charged the Aerdy line. None were spared and King Galagas is said to have died with an elven arrow in his eye shot through the eye-slit of his great helm. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 14

2020-02-18T00:33:02-05:00February 18th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 14 "This I do not like," Ivo said looking back the way they'd come. "Yes," Telenstil agreed speaking slowly, "both our scouts are gone." "I've heard you both say the same before and it came to naught," Harold said, "I'm going to find Harald, you stay here and wait for Ghibelline." The halfling turned aside and gestured to Little Rat to follow. "Wait, Harold, Wait," Telenstil called after him. To his surprise the halfling stopped. "We will go, but I will not abandon Ghibelline or Harald." "You will have us split again," said Ivo. "No, we will search for Harald first then for Ghibelline," Telenstil told them all. "No, Telenstil, we cannot leave Ghibelline," Gytha objected. "Ghibelline may be well," said Telenstil, "he works to hide our trail, but Harald should have come back, something is wrong there." "I will go back and find him," Gytha said firmly. "Gytha, no," Telenstil looked her in the eye. "We may need you. If there is something wrong we would lose you as well. We will not abandon Ghibelline...." "We are, Telenstil, we are," she said regretfully. "Let us be gone then, I will not abandon Harald as well." * * * Stillness: A slight breeze that ran across the denuded woods and raised a small dancing ghost of shredded leaves, then stillness again. Ghibelline did not move. Time passed, he worried that he was too long away from the others, but the feeling that something watched, something followed; that feeling was strong. His only cover was the thickness of the brush, but it was enough. Something stirred, the ... read more!

History of the North, Part 5: The Coming Storm

2020-02-15T08:58:00-05:00February 15th, 2020|

History of the North, Part 5: The Coming Storm "Men's evil manners live in brass; their virtues we write in water.' Shakespeare, Henry VIII (1613) Act 4, sc.2, l.45 The forces of weal and good had much to celebrate. Iuz was no more. Iggwilv’s tyranny had been vanquished. But more than even these great victories, they had stood against a great menace that had hitherto lurked in a quiet corner of the world. However, no reprieve lasts forever. Evil rises again and again, and all must be vigilant, for it rises in the most unexpected places. One might expect that it takes root in tangled forests and fetid swamps, but that is not true; it festers in the hearts of the lustful, the wrathful, in avarice and vanity, pride and vainglory. And in the soul of the defeated. Thus, the greatest Evil might rise up in the most unlikely places, a village, or a hamlet, unseen. c.550 CY               A collection of hovels and their slovenly inhabitants formed the nucleus for the troubles which were to increase. A wicked cleric established a small chapel at this point. The folk of Hommlet tended to ignore Nulb, even though it was but six miles distant. [T1 The Village of Hommlet] The village of Nubb began to fester with all manner if evil folk, culminating with the founding of the soon infamous Temple of Elemental Evil. The troubles began soon thereafter. Local caravans, gnome clans and the neighboring village of Hommlet, became easy targets for bandits from that region. [The Battle of Emridy Meadows, by Mike Bridges] 568 CY  News of this evil quickly spread to the Viscounty of ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 13

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 13 They wandered down the trail to where Gytha stood beside Ghibelline. The ranger talked with them standing straight and tall, the grievous wounds he'd received healed by the cleric's faith and prayers. "...be more." said Harald. "I know, they will be hunting for us, those wolves of theirs will track us down," Ghibelline said. "There are a few tricks to throw them off our trail," Harald glanced up and down the path. "But this place, they may lose our scent among all these bodies and blood."  * * * Telenstil had been right. The moons were up and still the party was on the move. It was slow going, and despite Harald's best efforts they were leaving an easy trail. They were heading north and west, away from the hills and up into the mountains, but they hadn't left the woods behind. Low branches slashed at them, roots and stones caught their feet, made them trip and stumble; they followed a deer trail that weaved through the underbrush. The ground was rough and uneven, the trail narrow and lined with thornbushes, they moved with a slow and awkward pace. Harald had gone ahead, some said that he had the elven sight but it wasn't true, what the darkness hid from his eyes his other senses revealed to him. It was Talberth and Gytha who had the worst of it, neither could see far in the dim moonlight. Gytha at least had some woodscraft, she'd lived within the hills and mountains of Geoff all her life, but Talberth had been born and raised in Greyhawk, the ... read more!

History of the North, Part 4: A Pause Before the Storm

2020-02-07T18:06:00-05:00February 7th, 2020|

History of the North, Part 4: A Pause Before the Storm Iuz had fallen, and Iggwilv’s tyranny had been short-lived. One would think that they had been working together, that each relied on the other’s success. The timing would suggest just that. Maybe they had. Each had leant an ear to Graz’zt’s whispers. Both had designed on the Vesve Forest. But thankfully, both had fallen short. And both were in chains, one beneath Castle Greyhawk, the other in the Abyss. This is not to say that the North was peaceful, because in truth, it was not and had never been. It is a harsh land, not given to pastoral pursuits. It has always been rife with raiding and banditry. New Evils were bound to rise up. And they did. 513 CY  Despite Iuz’s absence, Evil still flourished everywhere in the North. A new name was whispered in the taverns and inns, in the courts and halls of those who held sway: The Horned Society. It was said that it was a foul haven of deviltry. And like Iuz before them, it had designs on the North. It did. First, it must gather its forces if it were to fester. Deprived of their lord [Iuz], the euroz and jebli armies massing on Furyondy's borders rapidly dissolved. The barbarous creatures fought the regents of Iuz and won for themselves the east and west shores of Whyestil Lake. East of the lake, savage chieftains and unscrupulous humans founded the Horned Society. [Folio] 515 CY  The Horned Society were not the only ones to have designs on the North in Iuz’s absence; indeed, so did the petty despots that ... read more!

Where the Bandits Are – Freehold Part 1

2020-02-07T04:55:31-05:00February 7th, 2020|

Where the Bandits Are - Freehold Part 1 It is said that Eab Hulder, a powerful wielder of magic, summoned demons to help construct his great tower in the middle of the old fortress. Freehold, mighty Freehold, sitting against a lone southern arm of the Fellreev Forest is viewed with some respect by the other Bandit Kingdoms due entirely to the power of Eab Hulder and the forces he has gathered. He commands over a thousand warriors, one third of them horsemen including a small tribe of Rovers banished from their brethren. His guardsmen include a large contigent of foresters and rangers, half-elves of a disreputable sort and troop of halfling archers. Eab has attracted a number of apprentices and has with him three journeymen wizards of moderate skill. His castle is a three tower affair, the central building the largest and his dwelling, place of instruction and great summoning chamber as Eab specializes in such dweomoncraft.  His foremost tower is his great hall where he dispenses justice and hears pleas from the farmers and villagers under his dominion to the south. Normally Eab lets his war chief Cynfor, a exiled Geoffite, sit in his place as the wizard has little time or interest in rulership; He just requires supplies and tribute arrive in a regular and uniterrupted fashion while he involves himself with more important affairs such as summoning demons, devils and whatnots. The first tower also houses part of Freehold's garrison and Cynfor's chamber. His contingent of Geoff archers as well as the leaders of the various other small bands within Eab's overall force dwell in this tower where Cybfor can keep an ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – part 12

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - part 12 "Where is he?" Talberth yelled. The mage had awakend the orcs and showed them the food which Gytha had set aside. They'd muttered and grumbled, the leader, Boss, had tried to take six shares of eight for himself, till Talberth barked out a stiff rebuke. Now awake, the orcs milled about, eager to be on their way, still terrified of Talberth but certain that the giants would let loose their wolves and hunt them down. "Up here!" Little Rat yelled out excitedly. "We were up on the ridge," Harold called from above the camp, "and Harald is right behind us." "I'll go get Telenstil," Talberth turned away immediately and ran down the small rise that led up toward the halfling and his pet orc. Just behind the small pair Harald lowered himself carefully from rock to rock. He dropped down the last ten feet, hanging from his hands and landing in a crouch.  "Harold," he called to the thief, "do they have everything ready?" "I'm ready," the halfling replied. "Me too!" chimed in Little Rat. "I don't know if they are ready down there. Talberth just went to fetch them," Harold nodded toward the camp. "We need to get moving," the ranger said, "but the only path I found so far won't be easy." "I didn't find anything but thorn bushes and rocks," Harold shook his head. "I haven't checked the west. I can do that and the rest of you can start out for the center of the hill," Harald nodded first toward the rising mountains then back at the camp. "The way down ... read more!

NPC – Arash Ekbirian Horse-Archer

2020-02-01T18:55:34-05:00February 1st, 2020|

NPC - Arash Ekbirian Horse-Archer Arash is a First-Bow among his company of Ekbirian Horse-Archers and commands a patrol group of over one hundred riders. His patrol was near the border where Tusmit and Ull meet but he was recently recalled to the capital and sent on a secret mission safeguarding a powerful cleric to the north and the lands of the Tiger Nomads.  He wears the golden armor of a First-Bow, bears arrows that have been blessed and are most efficacious against undead and unholy creatures. His armor has been blessed to protect him and his bow enchanted to double his speed at firing as well as enhancing, slightly, his ability to hit and damage opponents. At his side is a Falchion crafted by dwarves and enchanted by wizards which makes it more likely his strikes will remove limbs or cause terrible wounds. Arash is surprisingly friendly and very well liked by his troop.  Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

NPC – Roynore – Furyondian Warhorse

2020-02-01T14:29:52-05:00February 1st, 2020|

NPC - Roynore - Furyondian Warhorse Furyondy has a proud tradtion of breeding some of the best warhorses in the Flanaess. Even the Great Kingdom cannot claim a greater line than the herd which provides mounts to the Furyondian nobility. The greatest of these is Roynore who was hand raised by Prince Thrommel and who once again bears the prince since his rescue from the Temple of Elemental Evil. Roynore possesses high intelligence and is able to communicate with Thrommel though he hides this ability from others. He wears a platinum harness that acts as like heavy enchanted barding. He has no bit or reigns but his saddle prevents his rider from being dismounted, his horsehoes provide him with enchanted speed and a series of amulets makes him immune to the sting and wounds of unenchanted missiles. Roynore considers Thrommel his brother and is devoted to him.  Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

History of the North, Part 3: The Rise of Iggwilv and Iuz

2020-02-01T08:25:00-05:00February 1st, 2020|

History of the North, Part 3: The Rise of Iggwilv and Iuz The North lay forgotten. The South was beset by turmoil. It was mired in petty wars. It had little interest in the goings-on of such remote regions; besides, what if banditry plagued it, what if petty kingdoms had sprung up across its breadth? If people lived there. It was too vast and too cold and too far away to be of any concern.Had they taken the time to concern themselves; because if they had, then maybe, just maybe, they would have been able to stem the tide of horror and misery that would eventually sweep across the whole of the Flanaess. But such is hindsight. 446 CY  Far from the North, the South Province seceded from the Great Kingdom. This may seem a small thing to the North, and it was, but it having done so shifted the attention of the Great Kingdom eve further away from the North’s continued stability. After the withdrawal of Nyrond from the Great Kingdom, the slide became precipitous. Buffoons and incompetents sat upon the Malachite Throne, and their mismanagement split apart the Celestial Houses. This period of degeneration culminated in the Turmoil Between Crowns, when the last Rax heir, Nalif, died in 437 CY at the hands of assassins from House Naelax. The herzog (great prince) of North Province, Ivid I, then laid claim to the throne. The herzog of South Province, Galssonan of House Cranden, broke with Rauxes and joined a widespread rebellion in the south. Years of civil war ensued, and only the intercession of dispassionate houses such as Garasteth and Darmen brought about the ... read more!

The Lost Library of Q’Sh – 3

The Lost Library of Q'Sh - 3 5). The hallway is very wide and has an arched ceiling that peaks 15ft overhead. It is extraordinarily dusty inside and the ceiling is choked with spiderwebs. When either set of doors (north or south) is opened the dust will be stirred and a small whirlwind will begin to dance in front of the open door. It will spin faster and faster and the dust will begin to form into the shape of a man. If disturbed the forming figure will give a loud moan of anguish and fly apart leaving a pile of dust behind, but if it is left alone it will become the figure of a tall robed man holding a book. He will hold out this book to the characters so that they can see the cover. On it is the sigil of a snake swarming around a set of runes. There are runes also inscribed along the body of the snake but in a different language. If Comprehend Languages is cast upon the book it will reveal dozens of names though one stands out as if embossed (Zuel). The runes upon the snake remain undecipherable. The names around the snake will begin to shift and push against the snake's encircling body and the snake's body will begin to constrict. The figure of the robed man will let out a scream and both man and book will explode in a cloud of dust. If the figure of the man is touched at any point during this process he will collapse in a pile of dust, though the book itself can be touched by the ... read more!

Minstrel Tales Give Me Three Brave Swords Shielding Give Me Three Brave Swords ShieldingThe minstrels and bards from the Shield Lands sing this song when raising support for their struggle against the Iuz and the Horned Society. It has become quite popular among soldiers, in their camps and the taverns they frequent.Give Me Three Brave Swords, ShieldingGive me three brave swords, Shielding,Only three brave swords; They will keep the little I haveFree from Iuz's horde.I am dying beneath Iuz's heel, Shielding,Dying beneath Iuz's heel; And the agony of such a deathNo balm may ever heal.Iuz has gnawed me like a wolf, Shielding,A wolf that is fierce for blood; All the day, and the night beside,Lapping at my blood.I dreamed of freedom in my sleep, Shielding,And the sight was welcome to see;I awoke with an eager, beating heart,But there was no freedom for me.How can I look to you, Shielding,How can I look to youFor swords to give to your ravaged land,When you are swordless too.For I read the defeat in your graven face, Shielding,And in your eyes so wild,And I felt it in your shaking hand,And in your heart so mild. What have the Shield Lands done, Shielding,What have the Shield Lands doneThat the Oerth looks on and sees us die,Perishing one by one?Do the nations of the Flanaess care not, Shielding,The great ones and the high,For the suffering of the Shield Land's sons,Whether they live or die? There are many still with a brave heart, Shielding,Dying of want and cold,While many escaped to safer lands,Still strong and rich in gold.Come nearer to my side, Shielding,Come nearer to my side,And remember me as I was,Your homeland before I die.Quick, for ... read more!

NPC – Selbie – Fruzti Farmer

2020-01-31T15:24:37-05:00January 31st, 2020|

NPC - Selbie Fruzti Farmer While the Fruzti are known as Barbarian Raiders among the southern lands of the Flanaess the bulk of their population are farmers and fishers. Selbie is a young woman but a much respected farmer. She has a smattering of the Sedr magic which all Fruzti women seem to have at least a hint. The druidess Olgy of her small village Granblomstran works with her both in her ability with the Sedr and her natural affinity with growing things. Selbie is the merest of apprentices in either. All Fruzti learn to fight as there is no real safety in the north. Selbie nows how to raise a shield, which end of the spear is the pointy bit and is working on a vest of leather armor. She has no plans or desire to move from the village and at seventeen is betrothed to Engenwulf the son of another prosperous farmer.  Those from Granblomstran and other small farming villages like it who have the wanderlust tend to become hunters, scouts or mountaineers rather than sea-raiders. They are more likely to own horses and know how to ride than their coastal kindred and head inland, west and south rather than east toward the ships and sea.
