History of the South-East, Part 2: In the Shadow of Aerdy

2020-04-18T09:07:00-04:00April 18th, 2020|

History of the South-East, Part 2: In the Shadow of Aerdy“Without a sign, his sword the brave man draws, and asks no omen, but his country's cause.” Homer, The Iliad It is uncertain what those first Suel expected when they crossed the Tilva Strait, landing on the shores of the land that would later bear the name of the scion of Schnai, Eri-hep-Mona, who led them there. Hepmonaland was densely jungled. Riches, likely. Room to breathe, surely. Did they expect that other civilizations thrived there? Not likely. They found the Olman, who they took to be southern Flan, dark of skin and straight of hair; then the Touv, darker still, almost ebony, yet blue of eye. Those peoples could not have been more different. Where the Olman fought among themselves, raiding and slaving and fighting among themselves, the Touv were organized and learned; and where the Suel found great temples to serpent gods amid abandoned Olman cities, they found the Touv joined in a great nation, The Kingdom of Kunda.Unsure of either, the Suel kept largely to themselves. Mostly. A few mixed with the Olman and Touv; had they not, those fair-skinned newcomers would not have survived this land of jungle and disease. They built their cities along the coast, then inland, and ever so slowly, they adapted to their new land and lost touch with their original culture and history. This not to say that they lived in peace. -252 CY The Touv had never been at peace with the Olman. The found the Olman worship of serpent gods repulsive, and their sacrificing humans to those gods repellant. For good reason, for they too had a ... read more!

Nation – Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches – Part 3

2020-04-12T13:13:02-04:00April 12th, 2020|

Nation - Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches - Part 3 Waymoinen and the magic of Oerth The loss of Leng awakened some nightmarish terror atop the Plateau which now bore his name. To this day even the Gods do not venture onto the Plateau of Leng. Waymoinen turned toward the more fertile lands south which were once the domain of the Ancient Things. Here he found the Mother of Witches, Iggwilv, and was first of the Gods to learn the magic of Oerth. Iggwilv dwelt in what is today called the Cold Marshes but she had servents and spies who saw things and reported these things back to her from across the lands. It was Iggwilv who first saw Mikko the Father in the darkness and betrayed him to the Ancient Things and she saw the coming of Matar in the summer light and the destruction of the city of the Ancient Things which is the ruined city of Blackmoor. One of the most fearsome of Iggwilv’s servents were the creatures she made from the wings of hornets. She could shape them to any form and she would steal the essence of life from creatures newborn to make her creations move but they were not alive and those who lived in what is now the land of Blackmoor named them Husks for that is what they were. It was a Husk shaped like that of great bear which haunted the northern edge of the Burneal Forest who first saw Waymoinen and his companion Ukkounian the Songmaster wandering the plains north of the forest and so let its mistress Iggwilv know what it had seen.Iggwilv saw ... read more!

Nation – Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches – Part 2

Nation - Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches - Part 2 Waymoinen and the Plateau  of Leng The City of the Gods was a wondrous place, but it was of the moon Celene and not of Oerth and the ways of Oerthly magic were as of yet unknown among most Gods.  Mikko had learned of this magic in the darkness when captured by the Ancient Things in their citadel which became the city of Blackmoor, and Matar learned of this strange magic in the light of summer when she rescued him and broke the walls and towers and drove the Ancient Things beneath the foundation stones of the citadel and out beyond the edges of the light and the real. They gave Waymoinen a hunger for the knowledge of this new magic. In the Land of Black Ice creatures lived, but many were strange and many were evil and many were not of this oerth. The new magic was strong in this desolate land but in no place was it stronger than the terrible Plateau which was all too close to the City.  The God Leng was an explorer and despite the evil which flowed down from the Plateau as if it was a colorless smoke that brought nightmares and panic and terror without reason he longed to set forth and place his feet atop the cliffs which were higher than the clouds.  Now the Plateau was shrouded by clouds, and though the Gods had eyes that could see through stone, they could not see through these clouds and what was beyond them was a mystery. Waymoinen hungered for Oerthly magic and as of yet ... read more!

City – City of Greyhawk Contour Map

2020-04-07T20:55:59-04:00April 7th, 2020|

City of Greyhawk Contour Map Please forgive the grade-school style of my work, but I've never been a dab hand at drawing or cartography. This map is based on the map found in Gygax's City of Hawk's novel. The Purple is the highest elevation with each elevation depicting around a 50 foot rise, then red, green, and uncolored. The Blue represents the Selintan River. The red lines represents the city walls.I placed the Citadel at the highest elevation. High, Garden and River quarters I envisioned as hills that had been shaped and plateaued. The University and Clerkberg areas as well. The Old City I saw as a two step plateau with a higher elevation in the center with one end containing the Old City barracks, now the Prison Workhouse. For the most part I have seen the City of Greyhawk depicted as flat, but in City of Hawks it mentions that, "The rambling walls follow the entire complex of ridges and hills that rolled from the northern tip of Old City to where the Grey Run and the Selintan flowed together."The colored splotches shown on this map are a very rough estimate. Within each area I see winding streets, some cliff-like areas while others rise slowly to higher areas. Some areas may have a more ridged or sculpted appearances, while many of the streets and buildings may tilt at angles in a ramshackle and shoddy construction. Nation – Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches – Part 1

2020-04-06T12:40:02-04:00April 6th, 2020|

Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches Player’s Background In Blackmoor the sun hides during the winter but stays out during the summer making the nights bright as day. Half the year is filled with snow and frost but the people endure and celebrate the days of light. These celebrations feature Matar, the Mother who flew to oerth from the moon Celene when the land was ruled by the Ancient Things. Matar is said to have followed in search of Mikko the Father who also flew from Celene but in the darkness in search of some great and powerful element to aid Celene who was wounded and dying. Matar brought with her many followers and came to rest first in the terrible land of Black Ice near to the Plateau of Leng, a vast and horror filled area which is higher than the clouds (Leng the brother of Mikko, lost in his exploration of the Plateau which bears his name). Here she built the City of the Gods and fought the Ancient Things till she had wrested the land of Blackmoor from their grasp and rescued Mikko from their dungeons beneath what is now the ruined city of Old Blackmoor. Matar rules the Summer and is worshipped in the light, while Mikko walks during the dark and still seeks that which will aid the dying moon Celene.  The Birth of Waymoinen the Smith While dwelling in the City of the Gods Matar and Mikko rejoiced and Matar  bore a son, Waymoinen. He was not born as a mortal would be but instead stepped from the EGG fully formed and hungry for knowledge. Matar taught him of ... read more!

Oerthly Equivalents – 2020

Greyhawk Online is pleased to bring you a submission from one of the greatest contributors to the Greyhawk Community - Jason Zavoda - creator of the Encyclopedia Greyhawkania Index . Jason gives us the comparative analogs he likes to use in his games to create the culture of various nations of the Flanaess. The nations listed are circa 576 CY, from the WoG Folio edition (1980). Read on, dear Greyhawker, and don't forget to comment below about what you use for various countries and which parts of the list you like, or might use for your own game! 'Til the Starbreak! Oerthly Equivalents Here are the general sources I've used in the past (as far as I remember). For the most part these are based on movies and popular fiction rather than historical texts. Nothing is set in stone and over the past nearly 40 years  of DMing the Greyhawk setting Ive used so much material for three full scale multi-year Greyhawk campaigns that Ive lost track of where it all comes from. Ive found that tying down regions to real world locals helps incredibly with developing a consistent collection of names for NPCs. It is also a great deal of aid to be able to shoehorn cultures into the game and be able to say to someone "It's like Last Kingdom, Braveheart, Zulu but with arrows and orcs, etc..." City – The City of Blackmoor

2020-04-01T18:32:38-04:00April 1st, 2020|

City - The City of Blackmoor Blackmoor lies in ruins much as it did when the first humans found it sitting on the edge of Blackmoor Bay long centuries ago. The foundations of Blackmoor are set deeper and more firmly than bedrock. They touch upon the boundary of the black abyss and the nightmare dreams of Elder Gods who were never worshiped by man.  Above ground, though in ruins, the shape of the human city still exists. The docks are empty except for the hulks of rotting ships, some no more than masts and upper works still projecting higher than the aging quay. The Sea Market was the life-blood of this far northern city. The buildings were never tall here and have mostly collapsed within themselves, the streets are clear except for scattered debris and the clean-picked bones of those who were unable to flee the sack when the defenses failed. The quarters and districts and inner walls exist, the Craftsman's Way burned, the great tenements of the Labor District collapsed, fallen across streets and alleys making the entire area a vast layer of wreckage; shattered stone and broken beams. The Path of Temples an open pit revealing the depth of the Undercity and the inhumanly vast greenish blocks of greasy stone which are the cities true foundation. Tallest among the ruin is the vast cylinder which had served as castle and palace to the old kings and queens of Blackmoor. Its upper reaches empty and hollow but the blackness of its high walls seemingly invulnerable to the damage which destroyed the city. Beneath the Castle, beneath the city, the tunnels are old, much older than ... read more!

City of Greyhawk Southgate – Southgate Bridge (South Bridge)

2020-03-06T15:47:08-05:00March 6th, 2020|

City of Greyhawk Southgate - Southgate Bridge (South Bridge)NOTE:  I have used the information in Gygax's Yggsburgh's campaign as an inspiration and guideline for detailing the bridge and its guards.Southgate is perhaps the busiest of Greyhawk's many gateways. Some may argue for Rivergate with its constant flow of goods into the city from the docks outside the walls, but the road south of the great city matches each cart, pack and wagonload through the Rivergate and surpasses such numbers with travellers on foot, horse, carriage and fantastic beast. As the traffic flows into the city so do the coins from the tolls of South Bridge and the gates. While South Bridge is not part of the Southgate complex of walls and towers, as the bridge is nearly 250 feet from the city gate and the tollhouse at the south end of the bridge, the small detachment of guards (1 serjeant and 4 troopers as well as 2 recruits during the daywatch) are part of the gatehouse commander's garrison. The toll collector is a minor functionary of the city bureaucracy. THE BRIDGESouthgate Bridge or South Bridge as it is now more commonly called is a massively impressive structure. It was constructed at the same time as the gates and outer double-wall which surrounds modern Greyhawk. Cyclopedian blocks of stone were used to form its supporting pillars, (12 sets which span the swift moving Grey Run as it curves around the city to merge with the Selintan). The surface of the bridge is formed of 8x8 foot stone slabs which can be replaced if broken or worn, but beneath them is a cradle of wooden timbers and a ... read more!

City of Greyhawk City Gates and the Gods

2020-03-04T16:06:29-05:00March 4th, 2020|

City of Greyhawk City Gates and the Gods City of Greyhawk City Gates and the Gods NOTE: The names and locations of these gates and the description of the city walls come from the novel City of Hawks (and Saga of the Old City in regard to the Black Gate/Beggars Gate), but linking them to the followers of specific deities is an idea from my Home Game. What provoked such an idea was the reference to alignment and religion within the city from Gygax's article "Varied Player Character and Non-Player Character Alignment in the Dungeons and Dragons Campaign" (The Dragon #9) and the practicality of having both clerics and magic-users as part of the guard compliment of the city gates. To maintain some sort of balance between clerics of differing faiths and alignments I could imagine only a rotating shift of clerics of varying faiths back and forth between the gates or dedicating a particular gate to a particular deity. I chose the latter as it seemed the most likely. The Gygaxian City of Greyhawk has sixteen gates. Eleven of these gateways are roadways in and out of the city while four are interior gates leading from the Old City to the New and one connects the Foreign Quarter to the rest of the Old City. The eleven gates that pierce the exterior wall are broad to accommodate wagon and cavalry traffic both coming and going. The outer wall around the city is actually composed of two walls separated by one hundred feet of open ground and so each road into the city is protected by two gatehouses. The outer gatehouse is a square 40x40 tower, 40 ... read more!

Historical -- The Battle of Shamblefield - 108cy The Friztii warchief Eiirik The Red leads his people against the might of the Great Kingdom. In front are three of Votan's holy champions, Berserks, who could not be wounded by normal weapons and had the ability to transform  into massive bears during battle. It was only t he enchanted weaponry of Caldni Vir and his officers that managed to slay them and stop the Fruztii advance.  Eiirik was also slain in the battle and the Schnai forces which had been delayed, or so they said, retreated before joining the fight. In this way the strength of the Fruztii were greatly diminished and the Schnai achieved dominance over them. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.
