The Homeworld of Vecna A Primer on The Whispered One for Fans of Stranger Things by "NyaPlush" [Editor's Note:  We'd like to thank the NyaPlush for preparing this for us!  The popularity of Stranger Things has brought a lot of attention (and nostalgia) to D&D.   Witness the Stranger Things boxed set, and the sheer volume of articles and posts about the reveal of Vecna at the end of the most recent trailer. Stranger Things A fan fervor is building in the Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons communities. A trailer for Season 4 released by Netflix on Tuesday, April 12th teased the next main monster, this time named after Vecna, The Whispered One, dark god of secrets and one of Dungeons & Dragons most enduring villains! What could this new foe borne from the Upside Down have in store for The Party from Hawkins? If this Vecna retains the personality or power of his namesake, they’re in for a spine-chilling war of minds that crosses the planes of reality. There are numerous Dungeons & Dragons campaign settings, though the cast of Stranger Things would only know its first published setting, Greyhawk. This is the game world created by D&D co-author Gary Gygax, who described a pair of artifacts known as the Hand and Eye of Vecna as the remnants of a long-destroyed undead mage of legend. The myth of the artifacts and the path of ruin they lead any user down was described in the 1st edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide, an essential book outlining the game’s rules and lore, and expanded upon in each subsequent edition. NPC – Rigmar the Wolf-Queen

2020-03-27T18:21:23-04:00March 27th, 2020|

NPC - Rigmar the Wolf-Queen Among the hunters of the Schnai and Fruzti runs a cult dedicated to the Wolf-God. Those who follow this deity bear the taint of the wolf in their blood and as an outward sign in their human form bear upon them the wolf medalion. Rigmar wears her openly as she is the Queen of Wolves among the Schnai and dwells in the wilderness beyond the furthest outpost or settlement. Rigmar is the daughter of the former Wolf-Queen (the Wolf-King is always chosen from the Fruzti and though he also dwells in the wilderness he dwells apart from the queen except during certain times of Luna's fullness). When either the king or queen is slain or dies their mate chooses to die as well and a new pair of leaders is selected. Rigmar is young as is the new king. She has possessed the wolf-taint in her blood since birth and is a powerful creature when she summons her wolf aspect. In her human form she is a hunter and a northern ranger as are all members of the cult. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

2020-02-11T05:06:38-05:00February 11th, 2020|

NPC - Elswyth Harvesthand Druidess Elswyth was from a farming family in Verbobonc. Her village of Coolspring was destroyed at the time of the Battle of Emridy Meadows by the horde of goblins that issued from the Temple of Elemental Evil. She was rescued by the Druid Jaroo from the village of Hommlet who had been part of the druidic forces warring against the temple. All that she knew and loved was destroyed and she dedicated her life to the eradication of such creatures like the goblins who destroyed her home and killed her family. Her feeling for the balance of nature is eskew in her hatred of the monstrous though she manages to hide it well. Secretly she has become allied with the Raven Queen and is actively fighting the Broken Hand goblins who have made incursions into south-eastern Verbobonc. NPC – Rhaine Wildwood

2020-01-23T13:22:53-05:00January 23rd, 2020|

NPC - Rhaine Wildwood Rhaine Wildwood is a druid of the Old Faith who wanders the forests and mountains. He is encountered in the most unlikely places and often aids those in distress. While he promotes a balance in nature he has a preference for humankind and animals over humanoids and demi-humans. He hates monstrous creatures, giant and goblinkind. During the giant invasion of Geoff he was a prominant figure at first aiding those fleeing from the giants and then in the fight to drive the giants and their allies and servants back into the mountains. He possesses an enchanted spear called the Blood Tree. The blade is wooden but the enchantment makes it sharper than steel and it negates all non-magical armor treating opponents as if they were unarmored. The haft of the spear is a living limb from a Hornwood tree and once per day it can cause a Hornwood sapling to spring from the ground where it is rested. Such a tree will provide limbs that will make superior arrows, bows and spear hafts and the sapling will grow to maturity within a year. Rhaine also possesses an item called the Wind Horn which can cause a gust of wind or summon a smnall wind elemental to aid him. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

NPC - Kekszem Wegwiur Pack-Leader The Wegwiur, or Wolf Nomad's as they are called, share their lives with their wolf companions so much so that the tribe and the pack are considered to be one. To kill a Wegwiur wolf is declare war upon all the tribes and is a fatal error made at times by foolish southerners come to trade with the nomads or attempting to cross the path of the tribes. The wolf-packs of the Wegwiur or numerous, more so than the humans of the tribes, and each man and woman is companion to a pack rather than just an individual wolf. The pack-leader does hold a special place both with their human companion and the tribe as a whole. Wegwiur wolves are larger and more intelligent than normal wolves. Since there are so many packs even within a small clan of tribesmen there are special ceremonial circumstances for the wolves to fight for pack dominance and leadership over other pack leaders. These fights are rarely to the death.  The old or weak among the tribes both human and wolf will take the Ride North and a funeral feast will be given before they leave for the Land of Black Ice and whatever fate has in store for them never to rejoin the living tribe of  Wegwiur or likely be seen or heard from again. Kekszem is a young wolf of extraordinary intelligence.
