A new font by Darlene!!

A great ands exciting bit of news!

Anna B. Meyer announced recently there is a new font modeled on official Greyhawk calligraphy coming out! It’s called “Greyhawk Gothic”!

She has sponsored a project by Darlene, the cartographer and calligrapher of the original World of Greyhawk maps. Darlene was very well-known artist and calligrapher at TSR in the early days of D&D (ca 1980-’84), and it was her hand-lettered calligraphy that graced the maps of the World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting that proved to be the foundation of every Greyhawk map since.

It’s notable that Darlene did hand-lettered calligraphy. In the 80s, there obviously weren’t desktop publishing apps for computers with fonts to automatically plug into a document.
Darlene actually studied calligraphy abroad in London while earning her degree in art at Beloit college. But, she says her interest in lettering developed alongside her interest in art.
So, obviously, she’s had to re-create the lettering she did on the map, and codify each letter to make into the font. Often, with fonts like this, there’s alternative letters for when there’s ligatures, or whether it’s used at the beginning of a word or sentence, or in the middle, etc. But, we don’t really know, yet, exactly what it’s going to look like, with the exception of the lettering in the graphic at the top of the page, provided by Anna.

According to Anna, the font will be made available for free under a Creative Commons license, allowing it to be freely distributed as long as the source is credited and is shared in the same manner, and it’s used in non-commercial work.
Anna also says that a commercial license will be purchasable from Darlene.
Greyhawk Online entirely plans to support Darlene, purchasing and using the font in many works!

[UPDATE, 20 June 2019]: The font is already released!!

Anna has graciously provided the font ZIP file to Greyhawk Online! The font is free for personal use, and the commercial license for the font is only $25 USD!
GHO may’ve been the first official purchaser!! We are pleased to support Darlene‘s art!

The font is copyrighted by Darlene and may not be distributed except in the ZIP format with the license information TXT attached, and under the same license as it is provided.
