Shalaster is the commander of the Imperial Highlanders in 585 CY, a military group which defends the borders of North Province in the Great Kingdom. He is technically a prince of House Garasteth, but does not use that title, as he feels like it alienates him from his men, and he is, first and foremost, a military man who maintains strict discipline among his men.[1] He also rides one of three war wyverns that are maintained by the Highlanders.[2]
Description

[edit | edit source]Shalaster is 6'5" and has a full head of thick solid black hair, along with very intense brown eyes. He is 39 in 585 CY.[1]
Personality
[edit | edit source]Shalaster is cruel, hard-hearted, and opposed to good-aligned individuals, particularly priests of good-aligned deities.[3] Nonetheless, Shalalster is exceptionally lawful and is a man of his word.[1] He is also not particularly ambitious, being content to run the army and eschewing the title of "prince".[1] He dislikes cowardice, and therefore dislikes being technically under the ruler of Stringen.[1] Shalaster also has a "boiling, steel-hard, utterly uncompromising loathing"[2] for orcs and other humanoids, which puts him at odds with the Grenell, though has enough common sense to not openly oppose a powerful animus.[1]
Religion
[edit | edit source]While Shalaster is nominally a follower of Hextor, being a noble in the Great Kingdom, he is not particularly religious. He keeps priests of Hextor in the Imperial Highlanders, but strictly limits their role to providing battle magic.
Possessions
[edit | edit source]Shalaster's forays into the Blemu Hills have made him exceptionally wealthy,[2] which allows him to procure numerous magic items, both for himself and the Highlanders. For himself, he has boots of speed, and plate mail +2, which has an added enchantment that lets him cast an aura of persuasion. He also has a two-handed sword +2 which does extra damage to orcs, goblins, hobgoblins, trolls, and giants. Some of the more powerful magic items he has procured for the Highlanders are drums of panic and a horn of blasting, both of which were made by Morrkend.[1]
Relationships
[edit | edit source]Shalaster is a frequent patron of Morrkend,[4] and begrudgingly loyal to His Grace, Herzog Grenell, at least in that he pays his taxes and tithes, and keeps quiet about his dislike of the man.[2] However, he has a burning hatred for Lakaster of Winetha.[1]
History
[edit | edit source]Shalaster, unlike typical Garasteth nobles, is physically powerful rather than intellectually and magically inclined, and faced mockery from his family because of that. This led him to swapping lands with a Torquann noble. While initially he controlled lands to the South of Rinloru, he now controls lands across the Teesar, to the east of Knurl, which lets him control the land surrounding the Highlander Castles.
