Turtleback Cove is a settlement in the Lordship of the Isles. It is on an island in the Tilva Strait, between the Tilvanot Peninsula and Hepmonaland. The town is a free port and is a site for pirates and smugglers to sell their ill-gotten gains, in addition to being a home port for some of them. While violence and crime are a part of life, people know how to defend themselves and, for the most part, live by a pirates'/thieves' code.
History
[edit | edit source]The island, commonly referred to by the locals as "Kranonk'Duul",[1] is a long-dead dragon turtle of truly monumental proportion. The creature is from an earlier time and has never been seen living.[2]
Turtleback Cove was discovered and founded by Captain Blanco Fisk over 100 years ago (circa 450 CY). Originally the captain of a notorious pirate crew (whose name was lost in time), Captain Fisk sailed both the Aerdi and the Azure Sea, amassing a great fortune. Upon discovering the skull of Kranonk’Duul, he put that wealth towards building a town free from the constraints of law and order, worshiping the ancient titans that roamed the sea ages ago. He eventually retired to his lighthouse, Duul's Eye, keeping a watchful eye on the ships coming to and from the mouth of the Cove. As the new settlement grew into a small, yet thriving town, they named it Turtleback Cove.
Geography
[edit | edit source]Turtleback Cove is on an island near the southwestern end of the Lordship of the Isles, in the Tilva Strait, where jungle meets surf and the warm humid winds carry whispers of distant lands. The island which holds Turtleback Cove is largely uninhabited and is not a natural island—it is the shell and skull of an exceptionally colossal ancient dragon turtle. The cove is a natural harbor within its skull; its jaw below the waterline and the sharp ridges of its beak making an enormous semi-circle reef, forming a safe harbor. Most residents stay within the protection of the skull, fearful of exploring the jungle growth further up the shell.
Terrain and climate
[edit | edit source]The shell of the dragon turtle forms the main part of the island (which is immense in size) and the lower jaw forms a barrier reef around the port, called Tide Edge Docks, providing ships safe harbor. While the skull makes something like an enormous cave over the harbor. The hills atop the town are dark and foreboding, full of unknown dangers, the islands' peak (strangely missing any growth) is the remains of the ancient turtle's spine. It reaches out above the rainforest canopies which have covered the turtle's back. Along the coast the shells become visible, salt encrusted and covered in coral and barnacles.
Inland on the west side are the Cursed Marshs. On the top of the shell is a place the people of the cove refer to as Calardan's Roost, here stands a black obelisk with disturbing carvings on the sides. The coast to the south east is treacherous and off the coast stands the Maze of Spires.
The island is tropical, with extreme heat and humidity year-round. In high summer, "great tropical storms" blow in from the Oljatt Sea.[3]
Cityscape
[edit | edit source]Turtleback Cove circa 576 CY is a small, stubborn port city that refuses to die. The docks are warped and weathered, built from scavenged ship timbers and patched with driftwood along the reef. They groan under the weight of merchant vessels, fishing boats, and the occasional pirate brigantine flying false colors. Cargo is always moving as laborers—barefoot, sunburnt, and lean—haul crates of dried fish, jungle spices, and black-market goods from ship to shore and back. Children dart between barrels and ropes, earning copper coins for errands or petty theft. Fishmongers call out the latest catch for coppers before the heat of the day descends on them. While there are no official guards, the occasional fight is quickly subdued by the Brinejacks, a young upstart gang quickly gaining notoriety—just one of many pirating brigand groups.
As this small town rises up from the bustling port, an abandoned lighthouse (called the Duul's Eye by locals) is nestled in the eye of the skull. A second lighthouse, operating on the reef, guides ships into port, as well as serving as an early warning to ships and townsfolk of attacks and dangerous weather. As with most port towns, the local taverns are busy serving cheap ale and questionable food (mostly fish stew), as well as offering an inexpensive place to sleep. Further up the hill, the quality starts to improve, as does the price and intrigue. The worst part were the riff-raff make their home among dilapidated warehouses is called Downwind.
Despite the potential dangers, Turtleback Cove pulses with grit, desperation, and the raw energy of people clinging to hope. It’s a place where a person can lose their purse, their ship, even their soul—but if they're lucky, they might just find a legend.
