NPC – Nycaise the Red

2020-02-29T10:29:30-05:00February 29th, 2020|

NPC - Nycaise the RedNycaise is the youngest of three sons to the Furyondian knight Sir Toussain who served with Prince Thrommel at the Battle of Emridy Meadows. Unfortunately Nycaise is nothing like his father.Rather than following the path of knighthood Nycaise was drawn toward the wild and woodlands. He was raised more by the family's chief woodsman while Toussain was away fighting first for his prince and then off to Veluna. The woodsman was more poacher than baliff to the estate and a bit  of a bandit on the side. Nycaise had an affinity both for the woods and for the banditry and became both an excellent bowman and leader of a small pack of outlaws before he left home. Nycaise and his band now haunt northern Verbobonc and Dyvers. At times he travels to the City of Greyhawk doffing his fine leather armor and red trappings in favor of fine clothes that the son of a minor Furyondian Lord might wear with his bandit crew cleaned and clothed as his retainers. The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 14

2020-02-18T00:33:02-05:00February 18th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 14 "This I do not like," Ivo said looking back the way they'd come. "Yes," Telenstil agreed speaking slowly, "both our scouts are gone." "I've heard you both say the same before and it came to naught," Harold said, "I'm going to find Harald, you stay here and wait for Ghibelline." The halfling turned aside and gestured to Little Rat to follow. "Wait, Harold, Wait," Telenstil called after him. To his surprise the halfling stopped. "We will go, but I will not abandon Ghibelline or Harald." "You will have us split again," said Ivo. "No, we will search for Harald first then for Ghibelline," Telenstil told them all. "No, Telenstil, we cannot leave Ghibelline," Gytha objected. "Ghibelline may be well," said Telenstil, "he works to hide our trail, but Harald should have come back, something is wrong there." "I will go back and find him," Gytha said firmly. "Gytha, no," Telenstil looked her in the eye. "We may need you. If there is something wrong we would lose you as well. We will not abandon Ghibelline...." "We are, Telenstil, we are," she said regretfully. "Let us be gone then, I will not abandon Harald as well." * * * Stillness: A slight breeze that ran across the denuded woods and raised a small dancing ghost of shredded leaves, then stillness again. Ghibelline did not move. Time passed, he worried that he was too long away from the others, but the feeling that something watched, something followed; that feeling was strong. His only cover was the thickness of the brush, but it was enough. Something stirred, the ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 13

2020-02-09T00:06:28-05:00February 9th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 13 They wandered down the trail to where Gytha stood beside Ghibelline. The ranger talked with them standing straight and tall, the grievous wounds he'd received healed by the cleric's faith and prayers. "...be more." said Harald. "I know, they will be hunting for us, those wolves of theirs will track us down," Ghibelline said. "There are a few tricks to throw them off our trail," Harald glanced up and down the path. "But this place, they may lose our scent among all these bodies and blood."  * * * Telenstil had been right. The moons were up and still the party was on the move. It was slow going, and despite Harald's best efforts they were leaving an easy trail. They were heading north and west, away from the hills and up into the mountains, but they hadn't left the woods behind. Low branches slashed at them, roots and stones caught their feet, made them trip and stumble; they followed a deer trail that weaved through the underbrush. The ground was rough and uneven, the trail narrow and lined with thornbushes, they moved with a slow and awkward pace. Harald had gone ahead, some said that he had the elven sight but it wasn't true, what the darkness hid from his eyes his other senses revealed to him. It was Talberth and Gytha who had the worst of it, neither could see far in the dim moonlight. Gytha at least had some woodscraft, she'd lived within the hills and mountains of Geoff all her life, but Talberth had been born and raised in Greyhawk, the ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – part 12

2020-02-05T17:51:40-05:00February 5th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - part 12 "Where is he?" Talberth yelled. The mage had awakend the orcs and showed them the food which Gytha had set aside. They'd muttered and grumbled, the leader, Boss, had tried to take six shares of eight for himself, till Talberth barked out a stiff rebuke. Now awake, the orcs milled about, eager to be on their way, still terrified of Talberth but certain that the giants would let loose their wolves and hunt them down. "Up here!" Little Rat yelled out excitedly. "We were up on the ridge," Harold called from above the camp, "and Harald is right behind us." "I'll go get Telenstil," Talberth turned away immediately and ran down the small rise that led up toward the halfling and his pet orc. Just behind the small pair Harald lowered himself carefully from rock to rock. He dropped down the last ten feet, hanging from his hands and landing in a crouch.  "Harold," he called to the thief, "do they have everything ready?" "I'm ready," the halfling replied. "Me too!" chimed in Little Rat. "I don't know if they are ready down there. Talberth just went to fetch them," Harold nodded toward the camp. "We need to get moving," the ranger said, "but the only path I found so far won't be easy." "I didn't find anything but thorn bushes and rocks," Harold shook his head. "I haven't checked the west. I can do that and the rest of you can start out for the center of the hill," Harald nodded first toward the rising mountains then back at the camp. "The way down ... read more!

NPC – Arash Ekbirian Horse-Archer

NPC - Arash Ekbirian Horse-Archer Arash is a First-Bow among his company of Ekbirian Horse-Archers and commands a patrol group of over one hundred riders. His patrol was near the border where Tusmit and Ull meet but he was recently recalled to the capital and sent on a secret mission safeguarding a powerful cleric to the north and the lands of the Tiger Nomads.  He wears the golden armor of a First-Bow, bears arrows that have been blessed and are most efficacious against undead and unholy creatures. His armor has been blessed to protect him and his bow enchanted to double his speed at firing as well as enhancing, slightly, his ability to hit and damage opponents. At his side is a Falchion crafted by dwarves and enchanted by wizards which makes it more likely his strikes will remove limbs or cause terrible wounds. Arash is surprisingly friendly and very well liked by his troop.  Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

NPC – Selbie – Fruzti Farmer

2020-01-31T15:24:37-05:00January 31st, 2020|

NPC - Selbie Fruzti Farmer While the Fruzti are known as Barbarian Raiders among the southern lands of the Flanaess the bulk of their population are farmers and fishers. Selbie is a young woman but a much respected farmer. She has a smattering of the Sedr magic which all Fruzti women seem to have at least a hint. The druidess Olgy of her small village Granblomstran works with her both in her ability with the Sedr and her natural affinity with growing things. Selbie is the merest of apprentices in either. All Fruzti learn to fight as there is no real safety in the north. Selbie nows how to raise a shield, which end of the spear is the pointy bit and is working on a vest of leather armor. She has no plans or desire to move from the village and at seventeen is betrothed to Engenwulf the son of another prosperous farmer.  Those from Granblomstran and other small farming villages like it who have the wanderlust tend to become hunters, scouts or mountaineers rather than sea-raiders. They are more likely to own horses and know how to ride than their coastal kindred and head inland, west and south rather than east toward the ships and sea. The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 11

2020-01-31T14:15:26-05:00January 31st, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 11 "Come along," Harold called to the small orc. "You little monster," he said under his breath. "Wait, wait!" cried Little Rat. "I hurry." The orc slipped from stone to stone following the halfing's path. The two were almost of a size; the small, thin orc was just a hand taller, but nothing more than flesh and bones wrapped in a dirty rag of shirt and pants. Neither wore shoes, the halfling had the wide heavy padded feet of his kind and the orc had soles tough as leather, thick and scarred. Harold stopped, his feet on a split stone projecting from the wall of rock. He heard voices drifting up from below and peered down to see who made them. Between a wide cleft of rock his companions sat in two small groups. The orcs gathered round their leader, while Talberth, Gytha and Ghibelline sat by the body of the man they'd rescued and who'd died this very morning. Ivo sat atop a high boulder, half concealed by the stones around him and a cloak which blended in with rocks dull gray shade. There was a scrabble above, the sound of cracking stone, he heard a small sharp yell and jerked his head around looking up the wall of rock. Harold had time only to raise his hands. A wide-eyed orcish face came hurtling down. Little Rat crashed into the small thief and both went over the foothold in a tangle, both shouting as they fell. * * * Harold barely had time to scream out a curse before he and the orc bounced off ... read more!

NPC – Lavas Laerk Apothecary City of Greyhawk

2020-01-27T20:42:05-05:00January 27th, 2020|

NPC - Lavas Laerk Apothecary City of Greyhawk There are several apothecary, potion and compenent shops that can be found on the Street of Dreams in the City of Greyhawk, (although it is known mostly for a large and languid brothel as well as several dens where drugs are consumed and a large theater where illusions and shows of light are cast on the ceiling, and few all hours fried meat-sandwhich sellers nearby), but none are more respected than Lavas Laerk's Bottle Shop. His storefront seems modest but behind his counter the curtain in the doorway to his backroom leads to a long building with many basements and cellars. His stock includes potion and elixirs of almost any kind, medicinal or magical. The compenents held in storeroom cover the mundane, the exotic and the impossible. He is constantly on the look-out for replenishment of material and the source of many an adventurers livlihood as he sends them to find this rare plant or creature or that mineral or item necessary for the creation of potions, spells or items of power and deviltry.  The shop is frequented by some of the most powerful users of magic in the city and is guarded by several wards and creations that would daunt or destroy any would-be robber or burgler.  Lavas is something of a Half-elf, certainly there is high elf blood in him but it is questionable if the other half is human. He has run his shop for at least a century and, according to those with equally lengthy lifespans, appears no older than he did when he first opened his doors. The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 10

2020-01-26T22:04:40-05:00January 26th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 10 Dawn came to the giants' hill. Smoke still drifted from the embers buried beneath the fallen beams of the great hall. Giants and ogres poured water over the splintered wood; others pulled away the charred rubble and stirred the ashes beneath. In the sodden field sat Nosnra, he'd had them drag a table from the ruined hall and benches too. Engenulf's body lay prepared before him, Nosnra used piled boxes and crates to form a throne, then set the table at his feet. They laid the witan down and placed the benches round the throne for Nosnra's warriors, those who'd sworn the oath of blood. The giants put down their buckets, their bars of iron, and their axes. They left the orcs and ogres to drown the fire out then filed past the body of their witan and their chief. They had no feast prepared; the words they spoke were all of vengeance and of blood, the ale they drank, the final toast to their lifeless kin, was thick and bitter from the fallen ash. * * * It was past midday when Harald woke. He'd slept since dawn; hours past the time he'd asked Telenstil to wake him. Everyone else was still asleep except for that other elf, Ghibelline, and even he leaned against the rock wall with eyes closed. "Telenstil," he said to the elven mage who stood by the cliff's edge, "you let me sleep." "You needed sleep," Telenstil answered him. He looked past the ranger at the others who lay crowded under the overhang of rock. "Everyone needed some time to ... read more!

NPC – Rhaine Wildwood

NPC - Rhaine Wildwood Rhaine Wildwood is a druid of the Old Faith who wanders the forests and mountains. He is encountered in the most unlikely places and often aids those in distress. While he promotes a balance in nature he has a preference for humankind and animals over humanoids and demi-humans. He hates monstrous creatures, giant and goblinkind. During the giant invasion of Geoff he was a prominant figure at first aiding those fleeing from the giants and then in the fight to drive the giants and their allies and servants back into the mountains. He possesses an enchanted spear called the Blood Tree. The blade is wooden but the enchantment makes it sharper than steel and it negates all non-magical armor treating opponents as if they were unarmored. The haft of the spear is a living limb from a Hornwood tree and once per day it can cause a Hornwood sapling to spring from the ground where it is rested. Such a tree will provide limbs that will make superior arrows, bows and spear hafts and the sapling will grow to maturity within a year. Rhaine also possesses an item called the Wind Horn which can cause a gust of wind or summon a smnall wind elemental to aid him. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 9

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 9 "Can you walk?" Gytha asked Jalal. The old man still lay on the floor with his back propped up against a wall. He breathed deeply and seemed asleep till Gytha spoke, but then his eyes opened, lively and bright. "I don't know," he said. "I will try." With a groan he shifted onto his side and got to his knees, Gytha reached out to help, but Ghibelline put his hand on her shoulder and drew her back. Jalal's bones creaked as he stood, and he used his hands braced against the stones so that he could straighten up, but when he faced them it was with his shoulders back and his pride in place. "We must go," said Telenstil. "I have a friend here..." Jalal began. "I am sorry, we have also lost companions, the one who was left here and another, but we cannot stay," Telenstil explained. "There are places we could hide, and the orcs, they are in rebellion, we could enlist their aid," said Jalal. "I am afraid that we have had a confrontation with the orcs. They will not help us," Telenstil told him and shook his head sadly. Jalal sagged a bit at the news, but caught himself and addressed Telenstil once more, "I cannot abandon my friend." "We may be able to return. I had not planned to leave entirely, but this foray, we have stayed much longer than I had thought to," said Telenstil. "Come with us now and we will try to help your friend and rescue our companion." "I will come. You promise to return?" Jalal ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 8

2020-01-19T17:49:27-05:00January 19th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 8 "Harold! Harold!" Ivo called. "Where is our thief?" he asked the others. "I saw him," said Gytha. "He was attacking that giant from behind. I saw him stab its legs." She pointed to the headless corpse, a vast body lying on its side, the ranger standing nearby leaning on his sword. The giant's head rolled several feet away, wedged beneath a kitchen storage shelf. "Harold," said the ranger, shaking himself, still recovering from the rage that had overcome him. "Where is Harold?" They all began to look about the room. It took only a few moments for Ivo to find the little thief, unconscious, a small crumpled form soaked in the giant's gore. Gytha ran to his side, and the ranger crowded in beside them. "Is he all right?" asked Harald with a worried voice. "All this blood, I don't see a wound but I can't tell if any of it is his own," said Gytha. "He does have a lump on his head." "Ow!' the body spoke. "Good, maybe he has had some sense knocked into him at last," Harald said relieved. "What was this the third or fourth giant you have attacked since we have come to the steading, and that ogre. I thought you were a thief not an assassin." "Shut-up," said Harold, "both of you. Gytha I don't mind seeing two of you but please tell that fat old human to get out of sight. I'm feeling sick enough already." "Seeing double eh," said Ivo. "That is quite some lump you have there." "Gracious Saint, this small one has your brave ... read more!
