The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 7

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 7Harold lifted the ogre's blade. It was made for a human hand, a short sword or a long broad dagger, not what the halfling would choose to wield, but his own knife was gone. The sword's sheath was still on the ogre's belt, now lying down below where the monster's body had landed hard upon the stones. He had to keep the blade in his hand or leave it lying on the ground. He wanted to have both hands free, yet standing alone in the giant's kitchen he felt more secure with the hide-wrapped hilt grasped tightly in his hand."Little good you will do me against a giant or even another ogre," Harold told the blade. He paced the length of the large room, down its south-eastern arm, beneath the towering tabletops and out to the archway that opened on a long corridor and looked out across to a huge set of double doors. He peered down the corridor, looking south then north, but there was nothing but the tangy smell of smoke, distant noises like the creaking of old bones, and the dim glow of torchlight, the flames burning from sconces far off to either side. Back he went and then to the north and east, more tables, chairs, sinks and shelves, the room bent sharply to the north, a dead end, the kitchen larder. There was a doorway to the south, the way that Edouard went and Derue followed. Harold would not go that way alone, not if he had any other choice. From the chute he heard a banging sound. Harold ran over ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 6Ingigerd was taking too long to die.Estrith looked down upon the ancient crone and wished she could take the bony old throat between her hands and be done with her here and now. They had moved the dying giantess into a barrack's room while the giants fought the blaze that consumed Nosnra's trophy hall. The chieftaness had ordered the slave pens emptied below and now crowds of half-starved orcs ran about and filled buckets with sodden oerth. All the steading's inhabitants now battled against the fire. They threw buckets and spadefulls of mud onto the blaze. As it spread Estrith had warriors take axe to walls and create a break, keeping the wood from becoming more fuel for the smoking flames. The steading groaned, there was a booming crash that rang throughout the hall. Estrith ran from the room to see what had occurred. Some part of the roof must have collapsed, she thought. It was time to begin removing things from the hall to a safe distance beyond the walls."Alditha!" Estrith called to a young maid."Yes," the young giantess replied meekly."Come with me," the chieftaness commanded."But I am to..." began Alditha."You are to come with me," Estrith said with finality."Yes," Alditha acquiesced. They made their way down the smokey corridor and stopped before the door leading to the childrens' creche. Inside they could hear the sounds of playful games, shouts and laughter muffled by the thick wood. Estrith opened the door and the wave of noise washed over them like a flood. She had to shout at Gundrada, the matron of the nursery, to be heard ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 5"I can fit between," said Harold."No, it's too dangerous," Gytha declared. She looked at the huge bars set so close that a youth could not squeeze through. Not so a halfling pared down by hard travel and poor fare. Harold showed her what he meant, with a sideways step he fit between the bars and only had to hold his breath and pull his stomach in."See," he said standing on the other side and holding out both hands. "No problem.""Harold," Gytha warned, "Come back here! This is no time to play a foolish game.""I'm hurt," he said. "You doubt my skill." Harold approached the bars and whispered to both Gytha and the ranger. "What have we come here for? I will be quick and who else can find out what lies ahead?""We should go back," Gytha said half-heartedly."I may be smaller than your young brothers Gytha but I am older than I look, older than your father no doubt. You humans live so short a span." The halfling sadly smiled, "I have thieved for longer than you have lived, in Greyhawk, greatest city on the Oerth, I learned my craft and paid my dues in many ways. I have faced a wizard's wrath and merchants' guards and wards and traps a dozen times a dozen. These clumsy backwards giants would not cause a raw apprentice a moment's worry. I will be right back."Gytha did not say a word, she hadn't had the chance, before Harold turned away and slowly crept across the floor. As he had checked the hall, he checked this room. The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 4 The nights were always long for Ingigerd. She had a thousand pains that during the day she paid no mind, but when she tried to rest each stabbed at her with knives and teeth, they bit and jabbed within. Still she would lie quiet in her room, four giant maids at her beck and call, and close her eyes. And if she did not sleep, she dreamed of times when she was young, long ages past. A young warrior, who never survived his betrothal quest, was pictured in her head. But she let him go and sat up and wiped away what might have been a tear. A far off noise came warbling to her ears. It rattled down the hall and even woke her lazy girls from their deep, snoring sleep. Shouts and screams, those heads that the old chief's boy had set upon the walls, ugly things or though they seemed to her. "Get up!" she ordered the four sleeping giant girls. "Alditha, go to the tower and have them sound the warning alarm. The rest of you, grab something and follow me." "Grab something?" quavered Alditha, the youngest of the maids. Ingigerd gave her a withering glance, "Not you, Alditha," she said. "You will go to the tower and tell them 'Ingigerd says raise the alarm,' those words exactly. Now go and waste no more time." She watched as the young giant maid ran out the door, barefoot and in her shift, and sped away down the darkened hall. * * * "It's dead, thank the creator," said Telenstil with relief. The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 3 "Fotia-ena!" exclaimed Talberth and threw the small pellet from his hand. It flew like a crossbow bolt and erupted into flame, then burst amidst the onrushing giants in a ball of magic fire. Telenstil did the same, "Tuli-pal!" he spoke and another line of fire swept up the hill and slammed into a giant's chest. He blazed like a man of straw, a wick for the burning flame. Around him other giants danced and rolled, but still two made it through and charged with smoldering hair and clothes. A pair of arrows shot out and struck each giant, and then again, the mercenary pair, Edouard and Derue, they'd used their bows to good effect, but such pin pricks did not even slow the giants down. As they neared Ivo, the wizened gnome, unnoticed amongst his companions, tossed a sparkling handful of colored sand into the air. It turned into a rainbow fan that dazzled the eye. It struck like a boxer's fist and stunned one giant who stumbled and fell. The other giant simply shrugged it away and came on, bellowing a challenge all the way. Harald had unsheathed his sword, a great claymore, he wielded it in two hands, but it looked oddly small in his huge ham-like fists, and against this foe it seemed no more than a knife. The old hero ran to meet the giant's charge and struck first as they met upon the sloping hill. The long two-hand sword passed completely through the giant's side, opening a gash waist high, a rush of blood and ale poured out and the ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 2 "Arise!" Nosnra commanded the assembled clan, "Arise and look upon your slain kin!"A feast was laid out in the Great Hall. Above the roasting pit was spitted a monstrous aurochs bull, now a well-carved skeleton charring slowly over the open fire. Barrels of ale, larger than a tall man, stood at head and foot of every table. Huge slabs of bread, served as edible plates set before each feaster, were buried beneath thick-cut hunks of meat, burnt crisp along their edge, but at heart raw red and dripping blood. Tubs of cabbage mixed with pickled dwarven heads, clean shaved, a rare delicacy among the hills. A dozen separate dishes, some hot and others cold, but most a charnel horror of sentient flesh, human, elven, dwarven, all fair game and sustaining meat among the giant-kind.At the chief's command each giant rose, benches scraped back across the floor, then every eye, sad and with deep respect, turned toward the pair of dead set before the thegn's high table.Huon's wife had brought their wedding shield, a huge kite of painted hide and wood, and placed it on his arm. Young Eadnoth had found no mate, instead his brother gave him a wanderer's staff, no runes carved upon it, his betrothal quest unlived, no tale ever to be told. A bread-plate of food was set for them, a huge flagon of ale beside their hands. Their bodies had been washed of blood, their wounds sewn tight and hidden, bloody clothes cut away then taken and soaked in oil. A torch would be made of these rags, wrapped round the ... read more!

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga He awoke with a start. Pushing the heavy fur-cover aside and sitting up he wiped the beads of sweat from his thick brow with the back of his hand. Something was not right, he could feel it in the marrow of his bones. Placing his feet upon the cold, wooden floor, worn smooth by years of use, he cradled his head in his hands and listened. At first he heard nothing, stray thoughts and the ghosts of dreams still inhabiting his mind, then, the breathing of his bear and the beating of his own heart. The walls were thick; the boles of ancient trees trimmed of branches but set in place still bark-covered and green. They had a voice of their own, creaking and groaning, as the wind, the weather and time wore at their very hearts. Outside, beyond the wall of his chamber, a hound bayed then a chorus began as the pack joined in. He could hear a yelp of pain and a shout, loud and commanding, then silence. All seemed well. No stirrings or misplaced sounds, yet his unease did not cease. He was bound to this place, born upon this very hill when this had been his father's steading, Tofig the Proud, a thegn of great renown. Now the steading was his, and he was chieftain over a dozen thegns, and these walls, the stones and the very oerth of this hill itself were a part of him. There was a presence, a wrongness, it twisted in his bowls and allowed him no rest.Nosnra, Chief of Thegns, Master of Nidaros, greatest of all hill giant steadings ... read more!

Download your FREE copy of Oerth Journal #31 now!Dan Anderson is a new author with GreyhyawkOnline, having come to us through Instagram. Social Media is one of the things we've recently talked a good deal about in the "Letter from the Editor" in the last two issues of the Oerth Journal (Autumn and Winter 2019). Social Media allows us to connect with many more fans than Editors of the OJ ever have been able to before! We're really pleased with this Special Supplement to Oerth Journal #31. It offers a look at a faction (two of them, truth be told) which take a normal trope for wizards, and turn it on its head! Read on, Greyhawkers, and find out all about the Orbane Synod and the Blood Council! In the city of Dyvers, there is an ongoing feud between two competing schools of wizardry, the Orbane Synod, and the Blood Council. The Orbane Synod are known for their oral tradition and their peculiar practice of never recording spells on parchment but instead hiding it away in familiars and homunculi throughout Greyhawk. Before wizards are granted the title of alumni of the school, they are sent on a vision quest to capture their personal familiar and begin shaping the world under ... read more!

Oerth Journal #31 Released

2022-12-26T15:57:43-05:00January 2nd, 2020|

You ever get that feeling that something takes both forever and no time at all simultaneously? Oerth Journal #31 has only been in the works 12 weeks. … but, at the same time, it's been a year. And that year's gone by in no time! Greyhawk Online was the original webhost for the magazine in '95 and GHO started publishing the Oerth Journal again in March of last year (2019) as a supplement for a seminar at GaryCon XI. Similar to most issues, design of that issue, OJ28, really began about 60 to 90 days before that, around January. Gathering authors, doing layout, all that great publishing stuff. But, never before had the Oerth Journal actually been published quarterly before. That was often what was desired or striven for … but, for one reason or another, life always got in the way, and previous Editors weren't able to get content fast enough to publish that often. But, now, we've managed to publish a quarterly issue each season. That makes this kind of a benchmark. It's never been done - whether in a 365-day period or any calendar-year. So, now, Greyhawk Online has taken up the torch and has run with it. , and we're already beginning layout and answering article queries for issue #32 due out in Spring! Oerth Journal #31 As we discuss in the Librarian's Chronicle (Letter from the Editor) on the inside front cover, the fan authors, artists, and editors who make the magazine happen are the real life blood of the magazine. GHO couldn't produce it, if it weren't for them. And that's the part where social media comes in. We are in ... read more!

NPC – Svelor of the Golden Shield

2019-12-26T23:54:58-05:00December 26th, 2019|

Svelor of the Golden Shield The Empire of the Winged Serpent is old; older than humankind. It has never truly fallen but the ages of its might have passed. Its wars against the Elder Things that fell from the stars, the Children of the Sea, the Iron Beasts and the Ageless Dark are legends even among the deathless rulers who slither among the great halls and chambers of its half-ruined temples and palaces. But too many of the true race have fallen, too few purebloods (called Abominations but outsiders) are born and the time of madness and breeding rarely happens among the race of snakemen who pulled themselves from the primordial swamps of eons long forgotten. Now the Empire is populated by half-breeds and near-humanoids in great number. Svelor is the champion of his race. He bears the Golden Shield of the protector, a potent item of science and magic that warps those who would strike at him till their very strength twists them into parodies of himself, the Snakemen's Bastards (Half-breeds and the Near) who serve the bearer of the shield even against their own kindred he should choose. His Sword is also golden, a strong curving blade, enchanted to sever arms or heads at swing, but still weighing so much that no normal human could hope to swing it. His crown is his armor, enchanted, offering his body more protection than any mundane suit of plate. Svelor moves with a grace and suppleness that belie his massive size. He towers on his belly half again as high as a man. On his shoulders are the Graces of the Sun; spiked and padded on ... read more!

NPC – The White Horseman

2019-12-24T23:43:15-05:00December 24th, 2019|

NPC - The White Horseman Near the hills of the Fals River as it winds its way into eastern Ket is a recent battlefield between an army of marauding Hobgoblins and Kettish warriors. The bodies of the dead still rot in the fields. Spirits roam the land and none more prominent than The White Horseman. Still in his armor and carrying lance and shield he rides the edges of the field, terrifying local farmers and hunters, as the Kettish are reknowned for their dread of ghosts and spirits. A delegation of clerics is due from Lopolla to cleanse the battlfield and put to rest the spirits but as with all things except business in Ket the delegation is slow to arrive. The battlefield, after all, will still be there so the clerics take their time. The White Horseman is actually part of a group stripping the dead of their valuables. He is normally either Burc, Rifki, or Ferda (two brothers and a sister) dressed in white on a white horse with clay on their face and paint or white cloth on their weapons and shield. There are seven of them in their family lead by their mother Savina. She has been going over the bodies with a fine tooth comb with an eye out for the commander of the Kettish force who wore a ruby ring of particular note. So far she hasn't found him (as he survived and has been taken prisoner by a handful of escaping hobgoblins). Twenty-seven hobgoblins escaped the battle, all from the Primrose Scimitar clan. They have three human captives, the commander Arad, his sergeant, a grizzled veteran, Mirac, and ... read more!

NPC – Harald the Old

Harald the Old - Ftr 9th Lvl - HP 91 - AC (8) {3 with Chainmail} [2 with chainmail and shield] +1 To Hit and To Damage due to strength. Cannot be knocked unconscious in combat nor can he be held, slowed or trapped by spells. If detect magic is used Harald personally radiates magic from his body. Harald has lived a long life and feels the approaching years with trepidation in his heart. Always he has put himself in the forefront of battle. He has gone on long and dangerous raids, adventures, quests and while his fame has become great a glorious death in battle has eluded him. Votan, he who chooses the slain to fight for him in the next world, calls to him and Harald is eager to answer that call. Armor and items of renown and power Harald once possessed, but he has set those aside, gifted them to friends and kin, so that the death-wound may find him. He wears finely crafted mail and helm, a sturdy shield and a thick cloak of red, but the only item of power he carries is his bastard sword, Steel-Cleaver. Steel-Cleaver - Bastard Sword +3(To-Hit)/+5(To-Hit & Damage) versus Giants and Giant-Kin - Any successful hit by Steel-Cleaver has a 20% chance of destroying any nonmagical shield, helm or piece of metal armor that is struck. The bonuses apply (To-Hit only and not To-Damage except against Giants and Giant-kin - Steal-cleaver is then a +5 to hit and damage weapon but does not destroy armor). While Harald is eager for a glorious death he will use all his considerable skill and combat knowledge to ... read more!

TGL presents: FACTIONS – THE GUILD OF WIZARDRY

2019-07-10T17:29:57-04:00July 10th, 2019|

Welcome adventurer! Before we get into the article I want to be clear that everything I post is truth within the campaigns run by ‘The Grey League‘ but is not canon, per se. I try to stick close to canon but where Gary Gygax left it vague… well, that’s the beauty of Greyhawk isn’t it? The creative freedom. That is why I will start every article title with ‘TGL presents’ so you know it isn’t 100% canon. Hope you enjoy my work and Happy Gaming! Symbol: Three golden triangles, one over the other, the middle one thin and the outer one missing a part in the two upside lines. The outer and inner one symbolizes the two pyramids, the UMA and the Guild itself. Surrounding the triangles is a magical circular swirl and, in the centre, the golden, lightly glowing letters GW – Guild of Wizardry. Those of rank 1 have the same insignia but with the letters UMA, to show they are still learners at the University of magical arts. Overview: Founded as a free haven for all mages in 393 CY by the legendary ‘Mad’ Archmage Zagig Yragerne. While the Guild of Wizardry is interested in its own aggrandizement, it has no political agenda. The wizards are usually too busy with their own affairs to meddle too much in the politics of the city. Membership also does not require exclusive allegiance, and many hold another faction membership. Because of this, many magi across the Flanaess claim an affiliation with this guild. In many places, membership in the guild is a source of prestige, due to the guild’s international fame. Over the last decade ... read more!

But…what is this paper doing in my pocket?  A coin and key symbol? What is that supposed to mean?!” - an introduction to the thieves’ guild in Thieves’ Cant. Symbol: A coin attached to a key. The coin represents wealth and the key influence. Overview: There is little you can do within the city that won't be spotted by them and reported to their taskmasters. The Guild was once the very epitome of shrewdness and superiority but now it is but a shadow of its former self. More recently, the war precipitated by former Guildmaster Arentol against Theobald and his Beggars' Union both killed off or discouraged many low-level thieves and apprentices, reducing the guild's pool of roguish talent. Make no mistake though, the Guild is still very influential. Anything lost or missing is most often blamed on the Thieves' Guild and they are used by mothers as the boogie man: “If you keep this up, the thieves will come in the night and steal you away”. After the great War, the Guild enlarged their own territory to include the whole Domain ... read more!
