The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 17

2020-04-07T03:31:47-04:00April 7th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 17 "What does that tell you?" asked Harald. The ranger bristled with impatience. "Look, the wire is frosted near the end where I held it to the mist," Ivo held the piece of enchanted silver in his hand and waved it toward the ranger. "But further on it is merely cold to the touch. It tells me a little tale; listen and I will tell it to you." "Sorry Ivo," Harald apologized, "I'm just worried about Talberth." "I'm worried myself," said Ivo. "The mist looks no more than half a foot thick, the frost on the wire goes no further. The wire was not destroyed; it was not yanked from my hand, as it might be if magic had transported it. It is not bent, so no trap was triggered by it passing through the mist." "That is no test for traps," the thief spoke up. "No Harold, but what else do you suggest?" asked Ivo. "Use that sword of yours," he said to the ranger. "Let it drag across the ground. See if there is a floor beyond that smoke, we could take a step and end up falling down a shaft like the one we saw back in the room of statues." Harald drew the long blade and stared at it for a moment; he hated to use the blade in such a way. "I don't think it will break," the thief said sarcastically. "All right, I'll give it a try," Harald said, but he was reluctant and moved with excessive care. "I thought you were in a hurry," Harold complained. The ranger held ... read more!

Nation – Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches – Part 1

2020-04-06T12:40:02-04:00April 6th, 2020|

Blackmoor Land of a Thousand Witches Player’s Background In Blackmoor the sun hides during the winter but stays out during the summer making the nights bright as day. Half the year is filled with snow and frost but the people endure and celebrate the days of light. These celebrations feature Matar, the Mother who flew to oerth from the moon Celene when the land was ruled by the Ancient Things. Matar is said to have followed in search of Mikko the Father who also flew from Celene but in the darkness in search of some great and powerful element to aid Celene who was wounded and dying. Matar brought with her many followers and came to rest first in the terrible land of Black Ice near to the Plateau of Leng, a vast and horror filled area which is higher than the clouds (Leng the brother of Mikko, lost in his exploration of the Plateau which bears his name). Here she built the City of the Gods and fought the Ancient Things till she had wrested the land of Blackmoor from their grasp and rescued Mikko from their dungeons beneath what is now the ruined city of Old Blackmoor. Matar rules the Summer and is worshipped in the light, while Mikko walks during the dark and still seeks that which will aid the dying moon Celene.  The Birth of Waymoinen the Smith While dwelling in the City of the Gods Matar and Mikko rejoiced and Matar  bore a son, Waymoinen. He was not born as a mortal would be but instead stepped from the EGG fully formed and hungry for knowledge. Matar taught him of ... read more!

Historical – Vlek Col Vlekzed 430cy

2020-04-05T11:29:33-04:00April 5th, 2020|

Historical - Vlek Col Vlekzed 430cy Vlek was a bastard. He was born a bastard and most people acknowledged he was a bastard all his life with many an adjective attached; charming, cheating, cunning, etc...  The Rovers of the Barrens lead a hard and unforgiving life but have an incredibly strong sense of family as well as a connection to tribe and warband and nation. Unfortunately those like Vlek born without a strong link to family or orphaned by the destruction of family or tribe are on the outskirts of Rover society. Vlek, though, was unusual.  As a child Vlek was strong and quick, cunning and charming (Charming for a Rover  and among Rovers at least). While he was often beaten in his youth he grew quickly and was a natural leader. Soon he lead a band of outcasts and the beatings stopped. His young group passed into adulthood together and raided together. But Vlek would steal from anyone including fellow Rovers and one day the tribal leaders had enough. Before anything dire could happen Vlek was warned and he and all the outcasts of the Rovers from young to old disappeared in the night along with anything they could steal. Vlek considered it their inheritance and small recompense for past maltreatment. Afterwards Vlek and his band stayed clear of other Rovers but instead raided the surrounding lands slowly growing in size in strength through captives and the attraction of other bandits  and malcontents. With his band grown prodigiously large and unwieldy he raided in Tenh. His losses were great but mostly among the weak and unskilled rabble he'd attracted and his winnowed band was ... read more!

Oerthly Equivalents – 2020

Greyhawk Online is pleased to bring you a submission from one of the greatest contributors to the Greyhawk Community - Jason Zavoda - creator of the Encyclopedia Greyhawkania Index . Jason gives us the comparative analogs he likes to use in his games to create the culture of various nations of the Flanaess. The nations listed are circa 576 CY, from the WoG Folio edition (1980). Read on, dear Greyhawker, and don't forget to comment below about what you use for various countries and which parts of the list you like, or might use for your own game! 'Til the Starbreak! Oerthly Equivalents Here are the general sources I've used in the past (as far as I remember). For the most part these are based on movies and popular fiction rather than historical texts. Nothing is set in stone and over the past nearly 40 years  of DMing the Greyhawk setting Ive used so much material for three full scale multi-year Greyhawk campaigns that Ive lost track of where it all comes from. Ive found that tying down regions to real world locals helps incredibly with developing a consistent collection of names for NPCs. It is also a great deal of aid to be able to shoehorn cultures into the game and be able to say to someone "It's like Last Kingdom, Braveheart, Zulu but with arrows and orcs, etc..." Oerthly Equivalents Almor, Prelacy of - Cromwellian England Bandit Kingdoms - Various Bissel, March of - Medieval Hungary Blackmoor - Finland/CAS/Cthulhu Bone March - Various Fantasy Celene - Lothlorien Dyvers - 15th century- Amsterdam Ekbir - Persian Frost Barbarians - Vikings Furyondy - France Geoff ... read more!

The Infinite Oerths Journal 32

2020-04-03T19:26:00-04:00April 3rd, 2020|

Wonders never cease. I'm published again. Needless to say I'm thrilled. This issue has a theme, and that theme was Infinite Oerths. That may sound odd to those already familiar with the intent of Gary Gygax's setting. Gary set the stage all those years ago, and then set it free. Make it yours he said. And we did. Each created a Greyhawk of his own, and each Greyhawk was unique. That was its charm. Greyhawk, by its very nature is a study of infinite possibilities. But despite Gary's best intentions, canon slipped in through the cracks. He himself began adding to the setting's timeline in the pages of the Dragon magazine. Then others followed, and before long, these dispatches were becoming canon. And before too long, there were further sourcebooks by Sargant, Moore, Mona, and Holian. And yet more Dragon articles. We were knee deep in accepted canon. Of course, no one had to use it. Gary's invitation was still there, It will always be there. Thus was the invitation of the Oerth Journal for its 32nd issue: Infinite Oerths. What if the accepted history of Greyhawk was a little different? What if the Invoked Devistations had never happened? What if Mordenkainen had hair? He did once, after all. He looked a lot like E. Gary Gygax once, if you recall. In any event, we were asked to peek behind the curtain of what might have been, or what your personal Greyhawk had evolved into over the years. Because some Greyhawks have been evolving for such a very long time, as has Lord Gosumba's Greyhawk. I was perplexed. I was crestfallen. I'd already begun a ... read more!

Oerth Journal #32 has Released!

2020-04-03T16:41:08-04:00April 3rd, 2020|

So, here we are ... just past the beginning of Spring! And ... we all know what that means!! A brand new issue of the Oerth Journal! The OJ doesn't always have a theme, but, when it does ... This particular issue's theme is "Infinite Oerths". We did a little discussion about the name of the theme about two or three months ago, before planning even began in earnest. We were talking with the members of the GaryCon panel for the Celebrating Greyhawk: A Fandom Renaissance seminar, and the topic of the next OJ came up. As some of you may know, we've made a custom of sorts of the OJ being given out - in print - to attendees of the seminar. And so, we were all talking about it and Bryan (Saracenus) pointed out that up 'til then we had been calling it "Alternate Oerths" ... which tends to imply that there's one which isn't alternate and is a "prime" or somehow is more "correct" than the others. That's an impression that we specifically wanted to avoid - in fact, we wanted to counter it. So, in gathering the articles and soliciting authors for the issue, we specifically used language that would encourage authors not to create "alternates", but, to take a facet of GH and make it uniquely their own. Some authors went with just a expository piece detailing something in GH that's been done different ways, and some (many) chose to create different timelines or write about one of the "infinite" possibilities of Greyhawk in home campaigns. Amongst some of the most popular, thus far, have been Gary Holian's look at ... read more!

City – The City of Blackmoor

2020-04-01T18:32:38-04:00April 1st, 2020|

City - The City of Blackmoor Blackmoor lies in ruins much as it did when the first humans found it sitting on the edge of Blackmoor Bay long centuries ago. The foundations of Blackmoor are set deeper and more firmly than bedrock. They touch upon the boundary of the black abyss and the nightmare dreams of Elder Gods who were never worshiped by man.  Above ground, though in ruins, the shape of the human city still exists. The docks are empty except for the hulks of rotting ships, some no more than masts and upper works still projecting higher than the aging quay. The Sea Market was the life-blood of this far northern city. The buildings were never tall here and have mostly collapsed within themselves, the streets are clear except for scattered debris and the clean-picked bones of those who were unable to flee the sack when the defenses failed. The quarters and districts and inner walls exist, the Craftsman's Way burned, the great tenements of the Labor District collapsed, fallen across streets and alleys making the entire area a vast layer of wreckage; shattered stone and broken beams. The Path of Temples an open pit revealing the depth of the Undercity and the inhumanly vast greenish blocks of greasy stone which are the cities true foundation. Tallest among the ruin is the vast cylinder which had served as castle and palace to the old kings and queens of Blackmoor. Its upper reaches empty and hollow but the blackness of its high walls seemingly invulnerable to the damage which destroyed the city. Beneath the Castle, beneath the city, the tunnels are old, much older than ... read more!

Appendix Z – C. L. Moore

Appendix Z - C. L. Moore I have only read a fraction of her writing, the Jirel and Northwest Smith stories, and not all of them, but C. L. Moore stands out as one of the great writers of weird tales and, with Jirel, the first woman who mastered swords and sorcery fiction. The Black God's Kiss touches on Hodgson, on Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, but in her own style and her own view of the weird and the horrific matched with a sense of adventure. I look to read all her works with great anticipation and recommend to any who are stirred by the great writers of the days of the strange, exciting and surreal stories caught between the pages of pulp magazines to search her work out as well. NPC – Rigmar the Wolf-Queen

2020-03-27T18:21:23-04:00March 27th, 2020|

NPC - Rigmar the Wolf-Queen Among the hunters of the Schnai and Fruzti runs a cult dedicated to the Wolf-God. Those who follow this deity bear the taint of the wolf in their blood and as an outward sign in their human form bear upon them the wolf medalion. Rigmar wears her openly as she is the Queen of Wolves among the Schnai and dwells in the wilderness beyond the furthest outpost or settlement. Rigmar is the daughter of the former Wolf-Queen (the Wolf-King is always chosen from the Fruzti and though he also dwells in the wilderness he dwells apart from the queen except during certain times of Luna's fullness). When either the king or queen is slain or dies their mate chooses to die as well and a new pair of leaders is selected. Rigmar is young as is the new king. She has possessed the wolf-taint in her blood since birth and is a powerful creature when she summons her wolf aspect. In her human form she is a hunter and a northern ranger as are all members of the cult. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

History of the North, Part 11: The Never-ending Storm

2020-03-27T17:56:00-04:00March 27th, 2020|

History of the North, Part 11: The Never-ending Storm “When wasteful war shall statues overturn And broils root out the work of masonry, Nor Mars his sword, nor war’s quick fire, shall burn The living record of your memory: ’Gainst death, and all oblivious enmity, Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room Even in the eyes of all posterity That wear this world out to the ending doom.” Shakespeare, Sonnet 55 (1609), Q 2&3 War is wasteful. It brings strife, pestilence and death. And it brings uncertainty in its aftermath. And sometimes, it is difficult to know if it is over. Because there may be an end to A war, but never to War. 587 CY All wars must end. Treaty Negotiations between Ket and Veluna, Gran March, and Bissel began, resulting in the Thornward Division. There was peace in the Bramblewood Gap, if one can call it that; in truth, tension rose, each side watchful, and a new type of war began, a Cold War.             Beygraf Zoltan's assassination in 587 CY and the resulting change in Ket's government led to a new policy regarding Bissel. Nadaid, Zoltan's state favored replacement, withdrew most of his troops from Bissel to deal with chaos in Lopolla, then began peace negotiations with the west, much to the frustration of battle-hungry Gran March war bands gathered at Bissel's southern border. Negotiations lasted from 587-589 CY, resulting in the controversial Thornward Division, by which Bissel's capital was lost and made a neutral city held and governed in common by Ket, Veluna, Gran March, and Bissel. Ket completely withdrew its armies, taking ... read more!

Adventure (Seed) – At One Stride Comes the Dark

2020-03-26T15:23:55-04:00March 26th, 2020|

At One Stride Comes the Dark There are terrible things beneath the streets of Old Blackmoor. A world exists deeper than the catacombs where the dead reside. The bowels of the earth do not hold this realm though it can be reached all too easily. The great ruined towers of Blackmoor where past generations built upon the foundations of races and beings older than humanity reach down into these dark realms. Tunnels, stairs, pits beslimed with horrific use, descend past the corridors of burial chambers and tombs, down and down till the stone gives way to textures that are smooth and warm with the fires of the oerth and not of this oerth; some passages constrict the body first into a crouch, then a crawl, then to a twisting and wriggling as if a great wyrm had shaped the passage to no bigger than its flesh could fit. Deeper still, whether narrowing tunnel or broad stairs with steps wide and steeper than the breadth a man could lift foot to tread, the passage twists; it twists the souls of men, twists their bodies inside out, twists their minds until each step is a scream, a nightmare that eats at them, gnaws their bones, crawls among their fears, deeper, deeper into the dark. And when no more can be born to those who have not turned away or lost themselves, body, mind and soul along this narrow twisting way, those who have survived, they step into the darkness, a wall, a pool, a great suffocating cloud deep in the earth and out onto a plain of silver grass and starlight. The land of Evening beyond ... read more!

Historical – Vedorox of the Vollie Defeats Suel General Suvenus 206 O.R.

2020-03-25T06:38:55-04:00March 25th, 2020|

Historical - Vedorox of the Vollie Defeats Suel General Suvenus 206 O.R. In 187 O.R. The migrations of the Oeridian Tribes had cut their way deep into the Flanaess. Only eleven years later in 198 O.R. the Suel began their own conquest of the Flanish lands. It was inevitable that the two would clash. Everything pointed toward the Suel as the potential victors in any conflict, but Vedorox proved that Oeridian courage and ferocity was too much for the well-trained yet understrength Imperial Troops in the vanguard of the Suel migrating population. In 206 O.R. in the land that would become Voll and later Veluna Oeridian met Suel in combat. This victory sent the advancing arm of Suel migrants under the command of Imperial General Suvenus into flight toward the South and the main arm of Suel forces. Suvenus himself died in combat, The Imperial Troops were decimated and the settlers with only the small rear-guard of Suvenus' army fled South. It is said the mighty wizardry of the Suel was countered by the ancient western artifact called the Sufang Flying Pig-Fish. Vedorox won this in a raid against the Baklunish deep in what is now the Dry Steppes, but was then a land of lush growth and green fields. The Battle of Voll was merciless, The Flying Pig-Fish ate the souls of six Suel wizards while Vedorox killed Suvenus in single combat and broke the shield wall of the Imperial Troops. None were spared though many surrendered.  The land of Voll was formed and Vedorox crowned its first king. The Flying Pig-Fish was lost, no mention is made again in the records of the Vollish ... read more!
