History of the North, Part 10: The Diminishing Storm

2020-03-21T07:52:00-04:00March 21st, 2020|

History of the North, Part 10: The Diminishing Storm When the hurly-burly's done, When the battle's lost and won. Shakespeare, MacBeth (1605), Act I, sc.1, l.3. The nations have spilled their lifeblood into the soil and soul of the Flanaess. Exhausted, they entrench and catch breath. They watch. And wait. Iuz controls the North. But his lands are poor and produce little. He gathers his strength. He watches. And waits. The Scarlet Brotherhood, their gambit played and played out, have a stranglehold on the south. They issue forth yet more spies. They whisper. They watch. And wait. Ratik understood its peril, and it began an ambitious project, one that taxed its resources, but was deemed essential by Luxnol. What good would minding the nations finances do were they slaughtered by the orcs and gnolls to the south, and the Fists to the north. Castles and fortresses and redoubts sprang up along the Kelmar Pass and the Flinty Hills, and in the northern Timberway. More rose up within the Kelten Pass, for surely the Fists would come again. Ratik is developing an ambitious castle building program, constructing strong keeps along its southern margins not far from the foothills of the eastern spur of the Rakers. They are digging in for a long struggle against the humanoids of the Bone March. Ratik is seeking mercenaries to defend the builders during the coming spring and summer. [FtA] The last we saw Lord Holmer, of the Shield Lands, he was hauled away in chains for a prolonged residency in Dorakka, A favoured guest of the Old One, himself. Most thought him dead. But there were rumours otherwise. A daring ... read more!

NPC/MONSTER – Gormiti Demon Champions of the Abyss – Aor

2020-03-20T15:25:33-04:00March 20th, 2020|

MONSTER - Gormiti Demon Champions of the Abyss The whirling chaos of the Abyss spawns creatures of terror. Though some are formed or achieve forms of an almost species-like quality such as those called Balors, Vrocks or Mariliths, most crawl forth from the undulating ooze of the Abyss as slug-like masses of slime and flesh. Then there are those Demons hatched from the larvae of evil souls collected by  Night Hags. These Demons are birthed on Hades and are said to be stronger as well as having an affinity for existing in other Planes of Existence. Certainly many of Demonic Champions are Hades Born as are some of the powerful Demonic Overlords such as Grazz't. Others claim that the struggle for existence among those originating from the flesh-walls of the Abyss makes for a stronger Demon in the end. Nurture or Nature. Each Demonic Champion is unique but there are some commonalities which have lent to strange alliances among these chaotic monstrosities. Many of their strengths, defenses and abilities are elemental in nature such as affinities to Fire, Water, Air or Earth, but there is no real kin-ship or familial loyalty and in the end every Demon is out for themselves.  Demons gather a following of lesser Demons while preying on their weaker brethren. The Abyss born are consumed on a regular basis though both Devils and Daemons are preferred. If a Demon is going to grow in power it must consume powerful creatures and Demons, Devils and Daemons provide the greatest boost to a Demons growth. A Demon Champion will have a retinue of other Champions and lesser Demons. In general they are of ... read more!

NPC – Captain Feradoon of the Hawk out of Ekbir

2020-03-19T14:20:52-04:00March 19th, 2020|

NPC - Captain Feradoon of the Hawk out of Ekbir The waters of the north are cold and the Hawk sails across these northern waters. Most ships out of Ekbir hug the coast and travel no further west than Zirat in the Janasib Islands and no further east than the lands of the Tiger Nomads, but Feradoon travels beyond the known lands over the borders of the map and, to the east, somewhere on the coast of the Land of Black Ice. Feradoon is a powerful warrior and was once an explorer aways eager to discover new lands and new people, but now he is no longer entirely human. Somewhere in his explorations he found something very old, very powerful and not of this Oerth. His shell may be that of Feradoon, and something of the man still exists or is trapped in his body, but inside, controlling him an entity that is beyond evil and perhaps beyond understanding lurks and learns and bides its time. This entity has infected the crew of the Hawk. Thirty-seven sailors aboard the ship, but they only replay old memories of who they once were, memories that are slightly off-center and frayed at the edges. The Cult of Istus has noted the strange actions of crew and captain and have begun to investigate. Feradoon is not accepting passengers but the Cult smuggled aboard an operative who was never heard from again. Now greater measures are required and a ship and doughty adventurers are sought to follow the Hawk and discover what has changed a once loyal subject of the Cailphate. Minstrel Tales – Shield Lander’s Lament

2020-03-18T18:43:53-04:00March 18th, 2020|

This is mournful song about the many Shield Landers who have fallen fighting against the forces of the Horned Society. Shield Lander's Lament I’m just an old loyal Shield Lander I’m fighten' through this world of woe. There is no sickness, toil, nor danger, That will keep me from my mortal foe. I’m going home to see my father, I’m going home no more to roam; It's just across that Ritensa River, I'm gonna cross to get to home. I see dark clouds have gathered o’er me, I see my pathway’s rough and steep; But no Horned Fiend is gonna stop me, My weary eyes no more shall weep. I’m going there to see my mother, She said she’d meet me when I come; It's just across the Ritensa River, I'm gonna cross to get to home. I'm gonna tell the Shield Lands story, Together with my blood-soaked band; I'm gonna wear that shield of glory , When I get home to that good land. I’m going there to see my brothers, They passed before me one by one; It's just across that Ritensa River, I'm gonna cross to get to home. I’ll soon be free from every trial, This form will rest beneath the sod; I've fought every step and every mile Now the path of death my feet do trod. I’m going home to see my sisters, Who shed for me their precious blood; It's just across that Ritensa River, I'm gonna cross to get to home. NPC – Yermak Vedkrenbo of the Boyvasadok – Rover Hero

2020-03-18T16:01:43-04:00March 18th, 2020|

NPC - Yermak Vedkrenbo of the Boyvasadok - Rover Hero After the disastrous defeat at the Battle of the Opicum the Bespled Uday (Rovers in common) tribes withdrew to their furthest and most secure hunting grounds. While the adult population of the tribe was whittled down there remained the very old, the young and pregnant or nursing mothers. Each year more of the young ascend to adulthood and Bhodan Vedkrenbo Chief of the Boyvasadoks (Wardogs) and leader of all Rover tribes has ordered the tribes to draw back to safety and breed more kindred to replace their losses. Yermak (Bhodan's younger brother) is troublesome and ignores his brother's. He and a small band of Rovers still raid, especially against the Horned Society but there aren't more than 50 adults and 50 or so young men of age fourteen or younger (adulthood is proven among the Rovers by passing challenges rather than just passing time so the age of adulthood varies). He is an expert horseman and archer. His bow is called the Demonbow and is carved from the bones of a demon killed by a Rover ancestor of the Vedkrenbo clan. It is an intelligent and powerful and changes any shaft fired from it into a flaming bolt of bone with a point of some Hellish metal that is particularly lethal to creatures from the more dark and nefarious planes. To oerthly creatures its arrows can strike and creature needing an enchanted weapon to hit it and is useful in piercing armor. One of these bolts can cause fire damage and excruciating pain which can stun a person or creature for a few moments when ... read more!

Minstrel Tales – The Leprechaun

2020-03-17T18:39:49-04:00March 17th, 2020|

In my campaign Leprechauns are legendary creatures popular in Geoff featured in songs, tales and ballads told to children. None, at least no one sober enough to be believed, has actually encountered one, but in a world with Dragons and Brownies, the Little Green Men are not a far stretch of the imagination. [ ] The Geoff Rangers who serve the Duke refer to their new recruits as 'leprechauns'. Here is a ditty sung to children While crossing Midwood, one moonlit night, a leprechaun I spied With a scarlet cap and coat of green, a crossbow by his side Twas "snik, snak, snik" went his knife, carving a tiny bolt I laughed to see him at his work, but the Green Man was laughing not With a quiet step but hard beating heart I softly drew away. But the leprechaun heard my steps and slyly looked my way. There was mischief in his little face and a twinkle in his eye. He raised a cup that had been at his side and drank his mountain dew Then quick as thought he raised his bow, "Your money purse!" he cried. I laughed to think what a fool I'd been and the Green Man was laughing too. I tossed him my pouch full of tobacco leaves so that it landed by his side As he turned to look I ran away which was the only think to do If you are crossing Midwood one moonless night and leprechaun you do spy Just leave him be and run full speed and keep your money purse by your side. NPC – Nergui Paynim Mercenary

2020-03-15T18:35:56-04:00March 15th, 2020|

NPC -  Nergui Paynim Mercenary The rulers of Ket have supplemented their cavalry forces with Paynim for centuries and the light horse-archers have proven well worth their cost. Lightly armored they depend on their mobility and their skill with their short but powerful bows to keep them at a distance for heavily armored foes or large or numerous creatures. They are also adept with their curved sabers and many are skilled with the lasso and weighted rope. Nergui is the leader of a small band of horsemen recently arrived from the Dry Steppes. His band of fifty horsemen has been sent to the borderland with Bissel due to a series of raids from tribes of mountain Hobgoblins. This is his first experience of lands more civilized than Ull and he is a bit awe-struck by what he has seen of Lopolla. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

NPC - Metin the Ox Champion of Ket Metin is a heroic warrior of the Kettish people. He is not a military leader though he has a cadre of followers; Warriors, magicians, clerics, all flock to him. He is often outside the borders of Ket and has explored deep in to the wasteland of the Paynims, out into Old Zeif, north among the Tiger Nomads. His horse Melek is the third of that name, is trained warhorse and armored in enchanted barding which helps to protect her and gives her great stamina and strength. Her plate armor gives her nightvision and the ability to be unfazed by illusion. Metin's armor and helm are enchanted as are his weapons and shield. He has a magical bag which can hold large quantities of items but always appears empty and weighs no more than the weight of cloth. He has a rope which can entangle anything upon command, a hand axe that returns when he throws it, potions of various sorts, and stewpot that once heated is everfull. History of the North, Part 9: The Raging Storm

2020-03-14T08:55:00-04:00March 14th, 2020|

History of the North, Part 9: The Raging Storm"Our battle is more full of names than yours, Our men more perfect in the use of arms, Our armour as strong, our cause the best; Then reason will our hearts should be as good." Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part II (1597-99), Act IV, sc.1, l.154. Iuz had rolled across the Far North. Tenh had fallen. Then the Horned Society fell. The Bandit Kingdoms fell or capitulated. The Shield Lands and Furyondy stood against the storm in the west. But not as one. And Nyrond stood vanguard against its raging in the east, enemies to the fore and aft. They gripped their swords and spears, and raised their shields against the coming evil. They did not have to wait for long.Furyondy looked to the north and saw doom as it never had. Fear prevailed among the populace, and faith in the Knights of the Hart, as well. However, faith can only gird the shield. Belvor needed nor than just fear and faith; he needed information, not rumours and hersay , if he were to defend against Iuz and his hordes; so he sent spies into Iuz’s empire.            Iuz’s assumption of power and armament for war did not pass unnoticed. Furyondy’s spies headed back to King Belvor IV with word of the swelling humanoid armies. The news could well have been written in the spies’ blood, though, for most of the human agents were discovered and slain, virtually closing King Belvor’s eyes and ears. When the few spies did reach him, though, the Furyondy king heeded the fate of Tenh and immediately set to ... read more!

Oerth Journal in Print

2020-03-14T01:44:00-04:00March 14th, 2020|

BREAKING NEWS!! Greyhawk Online is proud to present: THE OERTH JOURNAL, IN PRINT!! Last year as GaryConXI (2019) approached, the group giving a panel seminar entitled Celebrating Greyhawk: A Fandom Rennaisance was looking to give out some kind of swag to seminar attendees. As we gathered maps, heraldry handouts, an adventure … we realized we had so much to hand out, it should be collected. Greyhawk Online was already in the process of publishing issue #29 of the Oerth Journal, and so the idea was hit upon of printing the OJ for the very first time, and putting all the content in it, and giving it away for free. A limited edition of 100 issues was printed and given free to attendees.  The fan reception was overwhelming.  Many people asked how to get a copy, and wanted to know if it was going to be printed again. Collectors wanted to have it as a "rare" item. Thus, in order to support Greyhawk Online, the Great Library of Greyhawk wiki, and the Oerth Journal free PDF, GHO has decided to accept donations, and offer free print editions of the Oerth Journal to colectors who are interested in such niche items.  So now, through Patreon crowd-source funding, we're offering donors who support Greyhawk Online a perk! ... A copy of the newest issue of the Oerth Journal, IN PRINT! (The PDF of the magazine will still be available freely.) These limited editions are obviously few in number, and are otherwise only available to seminar attendees at GaryCon. But, now, everyone can get one! Each quarter when the Oerth Journal is released as a free PDF, those who've signed up as ... read more!

NPC – Fia Cruski Thief

2020-03-13T21:13:36-04:00March 13th, 2020|

NPC - Fia Cruski Thief Trained thieves are rare in the North. The only active guild is among the Cruski and it is one of the complaints by the Schnai and Fruzti about how much the Cruski imitate the Southerns. Fia is young and quick. She is a legendary pickpocket and spends most her time in the various harbortowns on the coast mostly steeling from southern merchants and sailors.  She isn't shy about plying a dagger in the back if the situations calls for it. She will normally pass herself off as one of the women who sells her body at the dockside taverns choosing drunken victims but prefers wealthy merchants. She has a small portion of Sedr magic that increases the potency of alcohol which she uses to great advantage. Fia has grown a bit tired of the pickpocketing and is open to the idea of general adventuring especial where a thief would come in handy. Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

The Hill Giant Chief – Nosnra’s Saga – 2020 – Part 16

2020-03-12T20:55:50-04:00March 12th, 2020|

The Hill Giant Chief - Nosnra's Saga - Part 16 The wall curved and the floor began to slope. As Talberth neared the far end of the hall he'd found a passage leading down. The floor and walls showed the scratching that they'd seen in the first passage. Here though there had been no mosaic on the ground, just rough stone that provided firm footing as the decline of the slope increased. "Do you think the orcs went this way?" asked Talberth. "I see no signs, but picking out one set of marks among these others is impossible," said Harold. The sloping passage sank beneath the floor of the hall as it curved near to the far end. It became a tunnel cut into the ground with walls and ceiling no wider than Talberth's outstretched arms. He could place his palm flat upon the ceiling and let the fingers of his hands brush both walls at the same time. Soon the slope leveled out and the passage crossed another, they could proceed ahead or turn to the left or to the right. Each way was dark, the walls were chipped and scarred, the floor marked by countless claws. "Which way?" asked Talberth. "Which way for what?" Harold replied. He stepped between the passages into the small open area where all four ways met. Harold peered down one way, turned and checked another till he had looked into each of the passages that lay ahead. "There is nothing, no difference that I can see. No sign of the orcs." Talberth huffed; he'd been hoping to find something right away. Time was passing, they had little to ... read more!

She rules over snakes and her return has set the Yuan-ti of Hepmonaland astir. Her ancient temples in Zeif are destroyed or choked with sand, her worshipers gone for millennia and her memory cursed by the Bakluni. But to the Yuan-ti she is the Great Mother and they have called to her for centuries. No living women or man has seen her face. She has appeared to the diviners across the Flanaess as a crawling nightmare, her face hidden, her torso that of a lovely woman surrounded by adoring snakes. Soon, soon, she will reveal herself and she will bring terror.   Originally published on the Hall of the Mountain King blog.

NPC – Einar and Vit

2020-03-10T18:59:17-04:00March 10th, 2020|

NPC - Einar  and Vit Einar is a Schnai warrior whose family was killed when an invasion of Gnolls swept down from the mountain upon his village. He had been away at the time serving the interests of the King by eliminating several problems in Ratik. Upon his return he was informed of the loss of his village and kin.  After immediately leaving the King's service he traveled north, then further north, then beyond the last outposts of the Schnai among the Corrusk Mountains. Einar is an immensely powerful warrior but neither a skilled mountaineer nor a tracker. Lost among the mountains trying to track down the Gnoll chieftain behind the raid on his village, he went a little mad in the wilderness. He had become a terror among the creatures of the mountains. One day he came upon a party of Ogres who had wounded a giant white wolf with a thrown stone. The wolf had bloodied one ogre but the group was preparing to bring it down with nets and stones. That is when Einar attacked them. His great sword cut through their flesh like it was made of snow and he steaming bloody sections. The wolf was down and unconscious so Einar brought it back to his camp and cared for it. In it he saw the spirit of his lost kin and named the wolf Vit.  Vit is of  unusual size and intelligence. He is absolutely loyal to Einar and understands the basics of what Einar's words.
