Greyhawk Gothic Font

2019-06-19T16:20:49-04:00June 19th, 2019|

A new font by Darlene!! ⸺⸺⸺ scroll Down For Update and Download!! ⸺⸺⸺ A great ands exciting bit of news! Anna B. Meyer announced recently there is a new font modeled on official Greyhawk calligraphy coming out! It's called "Greyhawk Gothic"! She has sponsored a project by Darlene, the cartographer and calligrapher of the original World of Greyhawk maps. Darlene was very well-known artist and calligrapher at TSR in the early days of D&D (ca 1980-'84), and it was her hand-lettered calligraphy that graced the maps of the World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting that proved to be the foundation of every Greyhawk map since. It's notable that Darlene did hand-lettered calligraphy. In the 80s, there obviously weren't desktop publishing apps for computers with fonts to automatically plug into a document. Darlene actually studied calligraphy abroad in London while earning her degree in art at Beloit college. But, she says her interest in lettering developed alongside her interest in art. So, obviously, she's had to re-create the lettering she did on the map, and codify each letter to make into the font. Often, with fonts like this, there's alternative letters for when there's ligatures, or whether it's used at the beginning of a word or sentence, or in the middle, etc. But, we don't really know, yet, exactly what it's going to look like, with the exception of the lettering in the graphic at the top of the page, provided by Anna. According to Anna, the font will be made available for free under a Creative Commons license, allowing it to be freely distributed as long as the source is credited and is shared in ... read more!

Stephen Colbert Plays D&D with Matt Mercer!

2019-06-03T16:52:38-04:00June 3rd, 2019|

This is a little more D&D-related, than specifically World of Greyhawk™. A little something in the news: Recently, on Twitter, there was a bit of a singularly surprising post that resulted in the host of The Tonight Show, Stephen Colbert, being invited to have a game of D&D with celebrity DM and acclaimed voice actor Matt Mercer, who is known for his livestreaming games show, "Critical Role". Colbert is well-known for proclaiming his love for D&D, and is a self-proclaimed geek, having last played D&D while in college. He often makes references to the game in his show, and has even spent an entire interview with Joe Manganiello (another celeb D&D player) talking about nothing except D&D! When Colbert took up the challenge, he made sure there was something more to it than just a game. It was set that it was to benefit Red Nose Day, a charity fundraiser for ending child poverty. Donors could help choose things like Colbert's character, companion, events, etc. It turned out to be incredibly popular in the gaming community, and was buzzed about quite a bit amongst the fans of Critical Role, known as "critters". The result was a hilariously fun romp through a short dungeon in which the quest was after the Crimson Sphere of Generosity (a delightful analogy for the aforementioned Red Nose) which was powered by the generosity kept in the hearts of people. Take a look, and watch all of the fun and antics ensue!

Official Setting for “Ghosts of Saltmarsh”

2019-05-08T17:05:08-04:00May 8th, 2019|

Greyhawk is officially the setting of the new adventure book "Ghosts of Saltmarsh". Thanks to a preview thread of Ghosts of Saltmarsh from @NewbieDM on Twitter, we now know beyond all doubt it's not set in a "generic" setting-less campaign. Nor is it officially in another setting with a sidebar for adapting or placing it in Greyhawk. It's absolutely, unequivocally, definitively set in Greyhawk. "PLACING THE ADVENTURE: The town of Saltmarsh is a small, respectable fishing town located in the Greyhawk campaign setting, in the southernmost part of Keoland." You can click on the image at right, to see the full image. The specific pivotal sentence reads, "PLACING THE ADVENTURE: The town of Saltmarsh is a small, respectable fishing town located in the Greyhawk campaign setting, in the southernmost part of Keoland." It then goes on to describe how the adventure can be used in other campaign settings like Eberron, Forgotten Realms, and Mystara - much in the same way Greyhawk has been included in other adventure books in 5e. Since the announcement of the new book, which has been greatly vaunted for containing new vehicle rules for 5e D&D, there's been a lot of rumblings of complaint on the 'net. Many people have referred to WotC "stealing" or "plundering" settings for plots, places, storylines, etc. It's likely that this comes from a place of concern from fans that their favorite settings aren't ever going to be in print again, and they don't like seeing the setting they like having content previously from that setting being used in other settings. While this is a completely understandable feeling, it seems to be fairly unfounded, and more ... read more!

A Visit with Tenser

2019-03-31T21:16:56-04:00March 31st, 2019|

Just earlier this month, at the end of GaryCon XI, we got a chance to sit down and visit with Ernest "Ernie" Gary Gygax, jr, Gary Gygax's eldest son. He had invited us to come to his home, to photograph some of the interesting and amazing art he had … the most prominent of which was the artwork given to him, depicting Ernie as his character "Tenser"!! Come take a look and see A Portrait of Tenser!

The Great Flanaess River Adventure!

2019-03-16T11:23:00-04:00March 16th, 2019|

There's a great new campaign in town!! There's fun to be had, quests to be taken, and adventures to be gone on! Recently, in Oerth Journal #28, the GaryConXI special print edition, we highlighted the Great Flanaess River Adventure Chapter 15: Free City of Greyhawk The Great Flanaess River Adventure is a great, great, great campaign that was written by The Oliver Brothers, beginning with their playing at home. They played in 3rd Edition, and they decided to publish their own games. The two youngest of the authors currently serve in the Army, and the other is a professor. They are all avid Greyhawk fans, and love the setting for its diversity, which this campaign largely demonstrates. They wanted to show how many different adventures one group can have and in how many locations. Anything is possible! The PCs aren't restricted to stay in one, single, static location for the entirety of their adventuring career! They move around! They go places, and do things, and meet new people! … and kill them, and take their stuff. :P In all seriousness, though - this is a really great adventure, just for the sheer variety of monsters that you'll encounter, and the massive array of fascinating locations, both new and old! There's a great deal of interesting plot hooks, and story devices to draw the players into each scenario, and while they are organized into a campaign, there's absolutely NO reason they can't be used individually in your own campaign if you happen to like just one of them, or if you need a Side Trek, or something, They are written with 1st Edition AD&D in mind, ... read more!

Soon, soon, soon! We're about to be on the road, travelling to the Convention next week! Well, in the air, at any rate! It's fantastic and exciting that we're going to be there with Luke and Ernie Gygax and the rest of the family for gaming, seminars, dice, roleplaying, swag, tshirts, new dice, friends, get-togethers, a few more dice, and early morning Mimosa breakfasts! Oh yeah, did I mention new dice? Visit our GaryCon XI page, to find all of the latest information and free downloads as the con approaches, and even more once the seminar kicks off! And if you're attending, Tweet at us @GreyhawkOnline, and we'll arrange to meet with you and give you a free copy of the commemorative edition of the Oerth Journal #28 and maybe some of the freebies from the seminar if there's some left!Looking forward to seeing y'all there, and be sure to follow us on Twitter, so that you can see the live-tweets of everything going on! The Oerth Journal endures!!

2022-03-07T11:02:05-05:00January 14th, 2019|

Long-time readers will be familiar with the title of one of the greatest and longest running fanzines in fandom. It began in 1995 with two people: Steve B. "Tamerlain" Wilson, and a very talented young fella named Erik Mona, who later would become the Editor of Dragon Magazine, and even later, Publisher of the Pathfinder RPG, one of the powerhouses of the gaming industry. Names like Rick "Duicarthan" Miller, Marc Tizoc González, Andrew Seale, Dennis "Argon" Lovatt, Nathan "Nellisir" Irving, and Tom "Blusponge" Harrison have pushed out the Oerth Journal over the years in increments of sometimes every season, sometime once a year. But, it was always there, and fans have always floated ideas around about what to put in the next issue. Because Greyhawkonline has been the long-standing host and sponsor of the Oerth Journal, you can read all of the back issues of the Oerth Journal by downloading them straight from GHO!! There's 27 issues, some of which, back in the day, were offered in "Printer Friendly" and "Tararasque Edition" copies. Nowadays, modern computers can more than handle the graphics that are in the OJ, there's not need for plain text without images. The original Oerth Journal logo from 1995 - 1998 So, we only want to "create and share" the best-looking versions of the OJ, and make sure that's what is offered here. [[Update: January 29, 2019 15:32Now there's an even BETTER resource to use on the Oerth Journal page!! We've added a SEARCHABLE INDEX DATABASE of all of the OJ issues, with article titles, authors, Volume and No., published date, and issue number! You know how sometimes you forget where ... read more!

What’s Old is New Again!

2019-01-04T21:26:40-05:00January 4th, 2019|

Many of our readers have been playing in the World of Greyhawk for years, now. One of the greatest missions of GreyhawkOnline.com is to preserve and share the writings of fans and professional authors that relate to the World of Greyhawk. Many websites of yesteryear have fallen to the ravages of the ages and many fans lament the loss of many of those sites, since they contained a great deal of resources. Just as many, perhaps more, are new to the setting, since it is so widely mentioned alongside other major settings in the D&D 5e core books.

A New Look and Feel

2018-12-20T17:44:57-05:00December 20th, 2018|

Welcome to Greyhawkonline.com and its new refashioned look. If I had to guess, there are many of us out there, I'm sure, who see this kind of thing every day. Movies "rebooting" a franchise, food packaged with "Now 10% MORE!", items are "New and Improved!", and on and on. Well, the thing of it is … Greyhawk Online had begun to look a little dated. No. Strike that. It hadn't begun to look dated. It was outdated! Quite frankly, it looked like it was designed in the 90s. Because, well, it was. The Old Look of Greyhawk Online! As you can see... for a long, long time, it was mostly just a list of links. Granted, all of those links were to the personal pages of fan-content creators for the most part, and every bit of it was hosted right there on Greyhawk Online … but, still. While I'm saying "Greyhawk Online" … let's make it easy: if you read "GHO", let's pretend I wasn't lazy, and actually wrote-out the whole thing. So, the new art, up at the top, there. I created it, trying to keep in mind the previous logo, and the look of the art from products like City of Greyhawk and Greyhawk Adventures. I thought it was important to make the imagery feel familiar. Gryphon comparisons! So, I decided to look at the old sources and wanted to use a gryphon which had been used before. I don't know why, but, in my head, Greyhawk was always associated with gryphons. Perhaps it's because of the gryphon-riding patrols in the Abor-Alz, so near the Free City at the edge of the Domain ... read more!
